WHAT HAPPENS IN GUATEMALA, CAN’T “STAY IN GUATEMALA”!
Great things happened on our trip in Guatemala, incredible things (that always happens when
God reveals His magnificent grace). From people who received generous gifts of love in the
form of a new home, to those who received much needed medical attention… hearts were
opened to His gift of forgiveness & eternal salvation. How many? Who knows but God; all
glory to God! But Guatemalans weren’t the only ones on the receiving end of God’s grace.
Every time I go I wonder who really benefits more; the “receivers” or the “givers” (team members)? In addition to being a spiritually uplifting week (using your gifts in new & profound
ways/seeing God’s grace poured out), it is a time of isolation from common distractions (life),
that leads to, in many cases, serious introspection. From the nightly devotions to a night of
dedication, what God is working on inside the hearts of team members comes out. Every time
I have went, I have heard the same type of comments (to paraphrase); “This week has made me realize how much I need to change how
I’m living my life…Why can’t I feel the same way back home like I feel right now?...etc, etc…. I’ll be honest. As a pastor, some of those
comments are hard to take. For example, one of the things that was repeated in our devotions by Dan (the leader) – the fact that the average Christian gives just two percent of their time to God each week - was a key part/illustration of a sermon I preached just 3 weeks before
we left. I, like any other pastor, have moments when I wonder, “Is anyone hearing what God is saying? Does our worship or preaching
His Word have any impact?” So to hear the comments…was tough, and I struggled with it. Yet…I praise God for it. I understand that the
context is radically different on our mission trip; God has your focus…there are no cell phones, TVs, internet, to grab your attention and
time. And if by chance that’s what it takes to get a person’s attention, I praise God for it! Which leads me to what the title implies, and the
comments I hear every time I go. The God that did great works in Guatemala is the same God you worship on Sunday in Fremont. The
difference is not with Him…but us. It can be the same. We can see God unleashing Himself in and through us. We can experience tremendous “God moments” and spiritual growth. We can; what happened in Guatemala doesn’t have to stay in Guatemala. And if you
haven’t went but have experienced incredible things, God things; it doesn’t have to happen once every 10 years, or every so often. It can
happen all the time! It simply depends on our response to what Jesus says, when talking about following Him in Luke 9 (vs.24); “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, and whoever wants to lose their life will save it.” You see, in Guatemala, everything that is done,
the building of homes, the clinics…has one purpose and one purpose alone; the eternal salvation of Guatemalans. Period. It is a flip-flop
of the two percent ratio; 98% of our time is spent on that one thing. What could be…if we did that in Fremont? Hesperia? White Cloud?
Newaygo? I think you know the answer. What God does when He has your heart and your attention…is mind blowing, and the impact life
changing. It can be the same back home. Will it be? For those that went (on any trip), and those that hear of what happened…I beg of
you; do not let what happens in Guatemala stay (or be confined to) Guatemala. Keep your heart open, and your eyes on Jesus! And the
celebration we hold today for those that will spend forever in the glorious presence of God through the grace of Jesus, will happen again,
and again, as your neighbors, friends, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, moms and dads, open their hearts to Him. May it be here, as it
was there…for the glory of the great Lord our God!

World Day of Prayer 2015 will be observed
Friday March 6th, at 1st Reformed Church, Fremont,
1:00 pm. This is an ecumenical worldwide celebration of informed prayer and prayerful action. Join the
prayer service written by the women of The Bahamas, which draws us into a study of Jesus' radical
love as he washes the disciples ' feet. Locally, WDP
has been observed since 1933. All are invited to
attend this interdenominational event. Contact
