The law firm of Covington & Burling LLP (“Covington”) funds annual Fellowships for graduates of Washington, D.C. law schools and the University of Maryland’s School of Law to work as staff attorneys with Neighborhood Legal Services Program for the District of Columbia ("NLSP"). Since 1964, NLSP has provided free legal services in civil cases to indigent residents of the District of Columbia. The Westwood Fellowship Program was established and named in honor of the Firm’s deceased partner, Howard Westwood, who helped to found and preserve NLSP and legal services programs nationally. Each graduate awarded a Westwood Fellowship must commit to serve as an NLSP staff attorney for at least one year, with an option to apply for renewal of the Fellowship at the end of the first year. Covington provides funds through NLSP to cover salaries and other benefits for Fellowship recipients, as described below. All third-year students attending accredited law schools in the District of Columbia and the University of Maryland’s School of Law, as well as lawyers who have received a J.D. degree from those schools within the preceding two years are eligible to apply for this Fellowship. The criteria for selection as a Westwood Fellow include: (1) a commitment to serving the indigent; (2) strong academic performance; (3) clinical or other relevant experience; and (4) an interest in practicing in the District of Columbia. Salary and Benefits Westwood Fellows are currently paid $40,000 for law school graduates and $41,500 for persons with relevant post law school experience. They receive all employment benefits available to NLSP staff attorneys. The Fellowship will reimburse Fellows for expenses incurred in taking the bar examination and a DC bar review course in preparation for the bar examination. Reimbursement is not retroactive and is not available to candidates who are already licensed in any jurisdiction. Recipients of the Westwood Fellowships are employees of NLSP, not Covington. How to Apply Those interested in applying for a Covington & Burling LLP Westwood Fellowship should complete the application form and email it to the address indicated on the form. Applications must be e-mailed by 5:00 pm on February 27, 2015. Copies of the application form may be obtained below as well as from the Career Development Office at the abovelisted law schools. Primary selection criteria include: 1. The applicant's commitment to serving the poor; 2. The applicant's academic record; 3. Any prior experience the applicant may have in public service work, including participation in a law school clinical program; 4. The applicant's interest in practicing law in the District of Columbia; and 5. Up to three letters of recommendation from law school professors, judges, practicing lawyers or others in a position to comment on the applicant's aptitude for a position at NLSP. Renewal of the Fellowship for a second year will be based on the Fellow’s job performance. More information is available at http://www.nlsp.org/2015-westwood-fellowship. PRO BONO OPPORTUNITIES Short-term and longer-term pro bono projects are listed on the CUA Law Pro Bono TWEN page. You also may create your own pro bono project. We encourage you to take the Pro Bono Challenge. Through the Pro Bono Challenge, CUA students pledge to complete varying levels of pro bono service during their three or four years of law school. Here are typical projects: The Legal staff at CASA de MD runs a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) clinic and welcomes law student participation. There have been recent expansions to DACA that, in addition to renewals for those already in the program, make it all the more important that CASA has help to ensure its clinics run smoothly. See info below regarding the next clinic. If you plan to participate, please sign up on the CUA Law Pro Bono TWEN page and email Liz Clark at [email protected]. Young people who are eligible will be able to submit applications as of February 20th, when the new forms and regulations are released by USCIS. The legal team at CASA will thus be working extra hard from the moment we gain access to the new forms in order to rework all of our training materials so that we can help the community apply as soon as possible. The details of the February clinic are thus as follows: When: February 28th, 2015 9:00AM (Mandatory training for all) Where: CASA de Maryland Multicultural Center, 8151 15th Ave., Hyattsville, MD 20783 Small Claims Resource Center: Help self-represented parties at a limited advice clinic open on Thursday mornings. The Small Claims Resource Center, which provides legal and Court information related to Small Claims law and procedure, operates out of D.C. Superior Court, Building B. The Center is open on Thursdays, and Court is generally from 8:45 – 12:30. This project offers good real-world exposure to civil procedure and the opportunity interact with and provide critical assistance to individuals navigating the system. Sign up on TWEN http://tinyurl.com/n5gduvx and email Professor Mullen at [email protected]. Office of Administrative Hearings Resource Center: Assist pro se litigants at the OAH Resource Center under the guidance of the OAH Resource Center Coordinator. Student volunteers conduct interviews during the clinic’s walk-in interview hours and provide legal information and brief assistance, including oral information and written informational documents; assistance in filling out OAH forms; and referrals, when appropriate, to organizations that can provide legal advice and representation. Monday and Tuesday options (the Center manages the calendar so will confirm availability on given dates) between 10am & 1pm for a 2-hour minimum shift (options include the full 3-hour shift, from 10am12pm, or from 11am-1pm).
