You also may create your own pro bono project. We encourage you to take the Pro Bono Challenge. Through the Pro Bono Challenge, CUA students pledge to complete varying levels of pro bono service during their three or four years of law school. Here are typical projects: The Legal staff at CASA de MD runs a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) clinic and welcomes law student participation. There have been recent expansions to DACA that, in addition to renewals for those already in the program, make it all the more important that CASA has help to ensure its clinics run smoothly. See info below regarding the next clinic. If you plan to participate, please sign up on the CUA Law Pro Bono TWEN page and email Liz Clark at [email protected]. Young people who are eligible will be able to submit applications as of February 20th, when the new forms and regulations are released by USCIS. The legal team at CASA will thus be working extra hard from the moment we gain access to the new forms in order to rework all of our training materials so that we can help the community apply as soon as possible. The details of the February clinic are thus as follows: When: February 28th, 2015 9:00AM (Mandatory training for all) Where: CASA de Maryland Multicultural Center, 8151 15th Ave., Hyattsville, MD 20783 Small Claims Resource Center: Help self-represented parties at a limited advice clinic open on Thursday mornings. The Small Claims Resource Center, which provides legal and Court information related to Small Claims law and procedure, operates out of D.C. Superior Court, Building B. The Center is open on Thursdays, and Court is generally from 8:45 – 12:30. This project offers good real-world exposure to civil procedure and the opportunity interact with and provide critical assistance to individuals navigating the system. Office of Administrative Hearings Resource Center: Assist pro se litigants at the OAH Resource Center under the guidance of the OAH Resource Center Coordinator. Student volunteers conduct interviews during the clinic’s walk-in interview hours and provide legal information and brief assistance, including oral information and written informational documents; assistance in filling out OAH forms; and referrals, when appropriate, to organizations that can provide legal advice and representation. Monday and Tuesday options (the Center manages the calendar so will confirm availability on given dates) between 10am & 1pm for a 2-hour minimum shift (options include the full 3-hour shift, from 10am-12pm, or from 11am-1pm).
