JEFF YOUNG: Cavs’ head coach Jeff Young (278-68) is in his 11th season at the
helm. Young’s .804 winning percentage ranks in the top ten among all active NCAA ll
coaches. Young passed Steve Loy (254-130) for the most basketball coaching wins in
Walsh history on 1.30.13 at Findlay. He has guided the Cavs to a National
Championship in 2005 (27-8) and nine 20-win seasons, and two 30-win seasons. The
2009-10 edition of Young’s Cavs finished 32-3 and lost in the National Championship
game. The following year Walsh again reached the 30-win plateau by finishing 30-2.
Walsh finished as Co-South Division GLIAC Champions last season with a 22-6 overall
record and 17-5 GLIAC record.
Things You Should Know
Walsh (14-10, 10-10), winners of nine of its last twelve games, plays host to
Wayne State University (5-18, 5-15) in a critical Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference South Division game. The Cavs have a one-game lead over
fourth place Malone with two regular season games to play. A Walsh win, and a
Malone loss would clinch a spot in the GLIAC Tournament for the Cavs. The top
three teams in each division qualify for the eight-team GLIAC Tournament, with
the remaining two spots going to the teams with the best record. The Cavs host
Malone in the 51st annual Mayors’ Cup game next Thursday at 7:30pm.
SECOND HALF SURGE FATAL: Findlay turned a four-point halftime lead (3733) into a double figure lead in a matter of minutes at the start of the second and
cruised to a 77-64 win on Thursday. The Oilers used a 13-2 run to open the half.
Zac Carter (16), Jesse Hardin Jr. (15) and Davonte Beard (14) combined the
score 45 of Walsh’s 64 points. Beard was 5-5 from the floor.
MAGIC NUMBERS: The Cavs are 12-3 when they shoot 45% or better from the
floor and 13-0 when they outrebound the opponent. Walsh has won only one
game when they were outrebounded (Malone). The Cavs are 11-3 when they
are leading at the half. Walsh is 2-0 in overtime games.
CARTER: Since becoming a starter 12 games ago Zac Carter has averaged
16.6 points and has shot 47% from the floor, 51% from three-point, 87% from the
free throw line and handed out 2.8 assists. Walsh has won nine of the twelve
games that he has started.
AMONG THE GLIAC LEADERS: Jesse Hardin Jr. is 6th in scoring (15.9
ppg) and 8th in rebounding (6.3). Zac Carter is 4th in 3-PT% (.446) and 10th in
FT% (.815).
HOME COURT: Walsh is 9-3 at home this year and have gone 73-10 at the new
Alumni Arena (2009). The Cavs have won 137 of their last 153 home games.
WAYNE STATE: Wayne State (5-18, 5-15) lost their second straight game, 8681, to Malone on Thursday. The Warriors led 39-38 at the half and held their last
lead at 65-63 with 6:24 to play. Clark Bishop tallied 20 points. Gavin Toma and
Chuck Key each added 13 points. Michael Lewis grabbed 12 rebounds.
AWAY: The Warriors are just 1-8 away from home. They have lost their last
seven road games.
GLIAC LEADERS: Gavin Toma is 8th in FT% (.826) and 10th in scoring
(14.5). Michael Lewis is 9th in rebounding (6.2) and 10th in steals (1.4).

Young returns for his 11th year
as head coach. After guiding Walsh to 18 wins in their first season in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Young led Walsh to a 22-win season in 2013-14, a GLIAC
Co-South Division Championship, and a trip to the GLIAC Tournament in their first year of
eligibility. The Cavs earned national respect with their first ever ranking in the NCAA ll Top 25
poll at number 23, reaching as high as 22nd. Walsh handed Findlay a rare loss on their home
floor (81-61) in January, put together win streaks of five, six and eight games and captured the
50th annual Mayors’ Cup game against Malone. The Cavs won 12 of 15 games on their home
floor and 10-13 away from Alumni Arena.
Before becoming NCAA Division ll eligible, Young (264-58) took the
Cavs to the heights of the NAIA with seven straight trips to the National
Tournament, won a national title in 2005, and finished as runners-up in
2010. After leaving the NAIA and playing a year in limbo, Young led the
Cavs into its first taste of NCAA ll basketball and the GLIAC in 2012-13.
In that first year Walsh had made a strong statement to the GLIAC by
finishing second in the South Division with a 14-8 mark, and an 18-8
overall finish. Young, one of the elite coaches at any level, is currently
third among all active NCAA ll coaches in winning percentage (.820).
Young has been associated with the program since 1986, where he
began his career as a player. In 2004, he was hired as the university’s
12th head basketball coach. Prior to his appointment Young served
eleven plus years as an assistant to former Head Coach Steve Loy (1992
-2004), who passed away February 7, 2004 due to complications from
liver cancer.
In his first year as head coach Young led Walsh to its first men’s
basketball national championship, and was named NAIA National Coach
of the Year. He directed the Cavs to the American Mideast Conference
South Division title and an overall record of 27-8, and was named AMC
Coach of the Year. Walsh completed their championship run with five-straight wins in Missouri to capture the crown.
Walsh would receive further national attention when Robert Whaley, the NAIA Player of the Year, was selected in the
second round of the 2005 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz, thus becoming the first Walsh player to be drafted. In his
second season, Young led the Cavs to another AMC South title and NAIA National Tournament appearance. Despite
failing to repeat as National Champions, the Cavs reached the NAIA Elite Eight and finished the season 27-7. In 200607, Walsh was again one of the most successful teams in the NAIA. The Cavs shared the AMC South regular season
title, and then won the AMC Tournament championship. At the NAIA National Tournament, the Cavs reached the
“Sweet 16” finishing the season 28-6. The 2007-08 season was again a stellar campaign for the Cavs. They won their
fourth straight AMC crown (12-2), finished 25-6 overall, won the AMC North-South title game and reached the NAIA
National Tournament for the fourth-straight time, again reaching the “Sweet 16”. The Cavs were ranked fourth in the
final NAIA poll. The 2008-09 season was no different than the previous four as Walsh again reached the NAIA National
Tournament; tied for the AMC regular season title, won the AMC Tournament, and finished 27-4 overall and 12-1 in
conference play. Their 27-4 overall record, and 12-1 AMC mark, ranked tops in Young’s first five seasons. In 2009-10,
the Cavs nearly matched their accomplishments of 2005, when they finished national runners-up, falling 67-66 to the
University of Saint Francis in the title game.

Walsh finished the season 32-3, with the 32 wins being the second most in a
single season at Walsh. They finished 15-1 in the AMC and won the AMC North/
South Championship game. In 2010-11, the Cavs ran away from everyone in the
AMC (17-1) and won their first 26 games, and were ranked number one in the
NAIA. Walsh would finish the season 30-2, and would receive the top seed at the
NAIA National Tournament. It was the second straight year they went to Branson
as the top seed. They spent eight weeks as the NAIA’s top ranked team.
Young’s teams at home have been nearly unbeatable. They put together a 49game home win streak, with wins in 80 of 82 games at one point, and 128 wins in
their last 141 home contests. Consistency has been a benchmark, as Walsh did

Championship Basketball Clinic with the likes of Billy
Donovan, Bobby Knight, Tom Izzo and Basketball Hall of
Famer Larry Brown.
Young enjoyed a stellar career at Akron Ellet High
School. He earned three letters for Bruce Moore and the
Orangemen and scored 886 points. He was first-team All
-City Series, All-Summit County, All-District and a thirdteam All-Ohio selection.
The sharp shooting guard enrolled at Walsh in 1986
and launched a magnificent four-year career. Young
demonstrated his ability to score right away, and in his
freshman season averaged 6.4 ppg in 32 games. In his sophomore season he averaged 14.6 ppg and was named firstteam All-MOC and All-District 22 for the late Dan Peters. He averaged 19.5 ppg his junior year, and was named secondteam All-MOC, and first-team All-District 22. Young’s senior year was just as prolific as the first three as he averaged
20.1 points and led the Cavs to the NAIA playoffs. Young scored 1,814 career points to become Walsh’s all-time scoring
leader (since broken by Corry Appline). He was named first-team All-MOC and District 22, District 22 Player of the Year,
and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American his senior year. Young averaged 15.0 ppg and is currently third on the alltime scoring list. He is a member (player) of the Walsh University Wall of Fame.
Young, an Akron native, earned his bachelor's degree from Walsh in physical education in 1990. He completed
requirements for his master's degree in education from Walsh in 1991. Young also served as Walsh’s Men’s Golf Coach
for seven years and initiated the women’s program. He guided the men to the American Mideast Conference Golf
Championship and a NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2002, and led the women to the AMC title in their first full
year of competition. In October of 2009 Jeff was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame. Jeff and his wife,
the former Lesley Keller, were blessed with the birth of their first child, Audrey Paige, in December 2006, followed by
twins Benjamin Jeffrey and Tessa Rae, and son Blake. The Youngs’ reside in Jackson Township.
