From the Principal
We will be holding our Meet the Teacher sessions in the week commencing 23 February. Sessions start
at 3:15pm.
• Monday 23 - Year 4/5 and Year 5 (in L1) and Year 6 (in G1/ G2)
• Tuesday 24 - Year 4 (in B Block) and Year 3 (in I2)
• Thursday 26 - Year 2 (in I1) and Year 1 (in A1) and Prep (in Q1)
I do remind parents that this is an opportunity to learn how your child’s year level will be operating in
2015. It is not a parent-teacher interview.
Student Dress Code
The Scarborough State School Student Dress Code is reviewed and endorsed annually at the Parents
and Citizens’ Association Annual General Meeting - this year Wednesday 25 February. A copy of the
latest endorsed version of the dress code is always available from the documents section of our school
website.
I am extremely happy with the high number of students who present each day complying with the
code. There are a small number of students we are working with to gain compliance. The main
‘problem’ areas seem to centre around hair, make-up and jewellery. Reprinted below is the relevant
section from the code:
• Hair is to be clean/ washed, combed/ brushed
• Clothes are to be clean with no visible rips, tears or holes
• Hair colour is to be neutral tones i.e. not multi-coloured nor non-natural hair colours such as pink, blue, purple,
green etc.
• Hair styles are to be neat and tidy i.e. no shaved styles, no ‘rat tails’, no mohawks, no words/symbols/ patterns
shaved in to the scalp etc.

School Photos
Order envelopes have been given to students. If you want to buy photos, please complete the details
on the envelope and then the envelope is to be given to the photographers on the day of the photos.
The school does not handle any orders or payments. Students need to be dressed in school uniform.
Hair styles must comply with the school’s student dress code. Students who do not comply may be
excluded from the photograph session. A timetable for the photos is attached to this newsletter.
Inter-School Sport
This commences on Friday, 27 February. Unfortunately tennis is not offered as an inter-school sport
this year. The decision not to have tennis was made at a District Primary Schools Sports meeting.
Students who have nominated for tennis have been reallocated to trial for their second, sport
preference.
Not all students will be selected for an inter-school competition team. Students who are not selected
will participate in an activities programme at school. This will be conducted by our P.E. teacher, Mr
Formby. These students will not have to pay a sports fee. During the season, should positions become
available in inter-school teams, then these students may be invited to fill the positions.
To play in the inter-school competition, students must return the permission and medical forms by
Wednesday, 25 February. These are to be given to the coach of the sport your child will be playing.
There will be a weekly sports fee of $5. This is a contribution towards the cost of participation which
includes affiliation fees, equipment, first aid kits and transport. The money is to be paid to the coach
on Fridays.

Please note that selection in a team is a privilege. Students and parents are expected to follow a Code
of Conduct. This will be sent with the permission forms. Please read this with your child when you
receive it. Students who are unable to comply with the code or who display disrespect, disobedience
or unsafe behaviours, may be excluded from further participation. All students are expected to attend
team practice. Regular non-attenders may lose their place in a team.
Students who do not pay the sports fee will attend matches but will not be allowed to play. If payment
of the sports fee is difficult, please contact Mr McGoldrick or Mr de Jong to discuss the matter.
Students who are sick or injured but well enough to be at school, will be expected to attend the game.
To participate in inter-school sport, students must comply with the student dress code. Students must
ensure they wear a school hat and for safety reasons no jewellery is permitted.
Music News
VOCAL GROUP
To all the super keen vocalists who have been enquiring about when vocal group will be starting, our
first rehearsal will be 27th February. That will be a Friday morning in Mrs Goldsworthy’s music room
from 8-8:30am.
Music Captains
Speeches for the position of Music Captains were heard today, and the votes have been counted. I am
pleased to announce that our Captains for 2015 are Rukiya and Renee. Congratulations to our newly
elected leaders and many thanks to our senior music students who nominated and the instrumental
students who were involved with the voting.
Instrumental Music Students
IMPORTANT
All instrumental students will have their lesson this week. Music fees and forms are due and all
payments should be finalised by the 6th of March or alternative arrangements negotiated with the
office. Remember that the reason you are taking an instrument home is to do REGULAR practice.
Make a time each day to do some playing on your instrument. When you are just starting,
10-15minutes will be sufficient, more experienced students should be doing ½ hour practice sessions.
Parents, please note that school insurance will only cover accidental damage to instruments on the
school grounds. If you would like additional protection for the instrument in your care contact your
insurance provider. Most importantly, do not leave your instrument in a hot car and take care of where
it is stored when at home.

⽇日本語のクラスのニューズ
Japanese Class News
Ask your Year 2 student this week what “Kin” and “taro” mean in Japanese – they should be able to tell
you that “taro” is an ending for boys names in Japanese and that “Kin” means “gold”. We have finished
our first book for the term and will be moving on to “Momotaro” next week. Stay tuned!
Class birthday calendars are well under way in the senior school with students learning about ages,
dates and months. Ask your student to tell you their birthday in Japanese! They may also be able to
teach you the “nan sai” song that we did in class! 元気でね!Take Care. ~Sensei
From the Office
The beginning of the new school year, brings with it class excursions and in-school activities that your
child/children could be attending. These payments are required to be paid by the due date, which
appears on all paperwork sent out. Late payments will not be accepted.
If you are experiencing financial hardship, please contact the Office to make payment arrangements as
soon as you receive the excursion/in-school activity paperwork. If prior arrangements are not made,
then it will be classed as a late payment and your child will be unable to participate.
Payment Methods:
• Internet Banking - direct deposit to School Account
BSB 064-122
Account No. 00090225
Reference:
Your student has a unique Customer ID e.g. 1234567890A which can be found on the
bottom section of the Tax Invoice
• Centrepay Deduction - this can be arranged through school’s Business Services Manager
• EFTPOS Credit/Debit Card - in person, at the Office or over the phone
• Cheque
• Cash
If your child is absent during the payment period for whatever reason, payment can be made by
Internet Banking or EFTPOS payment over the phone. These methods allow you to make payment
from the comfort of your own home without having to come to the school.
This also alleviates the disappointment for students not being able to participate in the excursion or
in-school activity as a late payment should not be necessary.

Centrepay is another easy option – this is where Centrelink garnish payments from your account on a
fortnightly basis to make prior payments for whatever you child/children may have in the future or at
the current time. You can set the amount to be paid for a length of time that you arrange.
STUDENT ABSENCES
It is important that parents/carers inform the school of their child’s absence/s. Unexplained Absences
appear on school reports. This is an area that future schools see when enrolling your child.
Absences can be reported to the school at any time of the day. You do not have to wait until the
school is open. An absence can be reported at any time of the day:
• Via the absence form on our Schoolbag App
• A phone call to the Absence Hotline 3480 3366 and leaving a message
• An email to [email protected]
• A phone call to school phone 3480 3300 <- is this right?
Other than the above, please call into the office and complete a Student Absence Explanation Note.

• These envelopes are PRE-NAMED FOR EACH STUDENT
• Remember to return the completed envelope on the day your child’s class photo is scheduled.
