TUESDAY FEBRUARY 17 2015 FROM THE CHEF Another day, another medal for TeamNL and another full day of competition. Our teams and athletes are really putting the work in and getting some great results. One of the big wins on the day has to go to Team PEI's win over Ontario in WC Basketball thanks to a helping hand from two of NL's best in Danielle Arbour and Liam Hickey. Great work. ­ Rod Snow Target Shooting delivered again today with Silver for Emily Keeping and Maggie Coady in the pistol team event​. SCHEDULE FOR WEDNESDAY Rod with Liam Hickey and Danielle Armour TUESDAY FEBRUARY 17 PAGE 1 Gymnastics The Women’s gymnastic team finished out their competition finals today with an effort we can all be proud of. Grace, Rebecca and Abbey finished 25th, 26th and 28th respectively. Coach Devonne Ryan says, “We are really proud of the girls’ efforts competing against Canada’s best! We look forward to getting back to the gym and working hard to get to the next level.” To watch the delight on the faces of coaches Allison, Devonne and Allison each time their athletes nailed a performance is what the Canada Games is all about…their dedication to the girls cannot be understated, what a wonderful job they have done. Finally, to all the Mum’s and Dad’s I got to know this week, thank you! The girls cannot do it without your unfailing support. ­ Simon Blanks Biathlon The Biathlon Team was up for the challenge today as the male team members participated in the 10 km Sprint and the females in the 7.5 km Sprint at Otway. Competition began at 10:00 am with 40 participants registered in each of the male and female competitions. Seamus Boyd­Porter was the seventh person to leave the gate followed by Jesse Byrne, Ryan Langdon and Austin Hodder. All team members fought a stiff competition in today’s races. Seamus was the 6th person to finish the male competition in a time of 28:33.6 minutes (2:14.8 behind the 1st place finisher). Jesse was 23rd in 32:24.5; Austin 34th in 36:38.8 and Ryan 35th in 36:56.2. Rita was the 3rd person to leave the gate followed by Marigold in position # 31. Rita finished 32nd in a time of 34:21.9 and Marigold was 35th in 34:42:0. Congratulations team on today’s performance…. it was a job well done! Competition resumes tomorrow at 10:00 am with the 12.5 km Pursuit Male and 10 km Pursuit Female. ​“Go Team Go”! Speed Skating Day 4 of the Games was a training day for our speedskating team. Ashley Higgins and Thomas Park, with Coach Melissa O’Brien and Lyndon Park, took advantage of the ice time at Kin 2 to work on technique. Wednesday will be a busy day...good luck team. ­ Frank Humber Target Shooting Shooting Wins “Silver”, Margaret Coady & Emily Keeping made the podium today with their strong performance in the 10m Pistol event, Margaret shot 352 and Emily 353 for a 705. In the Men’s Pistol Martin Dimitrov shot a personal best 539. Martin’s performance sets him up well for Thursday’s competition. Go Martin Go. Samantha Marsh, Hayley Barrett hit the range in the afternoon for some warm up shots for tomorrow’s Women’s 10m individual rifle starting at 9:00 am. William and Daniel look to own the podium again as they shoot in the individual rifle starting at 10:50. Team NL were in tough against the Toba squad. The girls were exceptional on the penalty kill.​ With your perseverance and character, PEI will be in for a tough game tomorrow. TeamNL’s four male alpine skiers competed in Giant Slalom today at Purden Village, on what turned into a bluebird day. The first set proved to be as difficult today as it was yesterday for the women, with Erik and Alex among the 19 athletes who skied out on the hard­packed course this morning. Both Kyle and Patrick skied clean on both the first and second runs, and Kyle posted a finish time of 2:36:77 to put him in the top 30 on the day. Our girls had a rest day today and used the downtime to check out some other sports and give some interviews! All of our men and women are back at Purden on Wednesday for a busy Curling day of slalom. The NL male curling team had tough competition on Tuesday as they faced the undefeated Saskatchewan team.
