Join our parish community and more than
13,000 Catholic communities across the United
States in a life-changing Lenten journey with
CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s rice bowl
from from the pews and back tables before you
leave church today. Remember, your Lenten
sacrifices change lives.
Hungering for a Better Life - Our journey with
CRS Rice Bowl begins in Tanzania, where a
simple soybean is changing lives! What actions
can you take this Lent to change lives—at home
and around the world?
We will be taking up a second collection for The
Catholic Home Missions this weekend. Your
donation and support will go towards
strengthening the Catholic Church in the United
States and its territories; fund a wide range of
pastoral services, including evangelization,
religious education, and the maintenance of
mission parishes; and train seminarians, lay
ministers, and ministry with ethnic groups,
particularly for Native and African American
parishes and communities. Envelopes are available
at the end of the pews. Please be generous.
THANK YOU FROM SAINT VINCENT DE
PAUL!! Thank you so much for your continued
support of our St. Vincent De Paul Conference.
We appreciate your donations - both the money
that you give and the items that you bring for the
donation boxes. All the money that is donated to
us stays with our Conference to help those in need
in our area. The items that go in the boxes are used
by the St. Vincent de Paul Stores for resale. 90%
of store sales goes for direct services to the poor.
In January, we helped 32 individuals or families.
Fifteen calls were for rent to prevent eviction, the
rest were for utilities or food. In some cases, there
were requests for both food and other assistance.
One was a working single mom who had her work
hours cut. She just couldn’t pay all her rent for the
month and we were able to help. She immediately
began looking for another job and should be fine,
but if we hadn’t been able to help when we did,
she would just keep falling behind. Know that
what you do does make a difference.
February is Black History Month
Please take a moment to read this
weekend’s bulletin insert for a
cultural
guide
to
African
American heritage in Seattle.
Photos of notable African American men and
women are also available throughout the walls of
the church, please take a moment to visit and read
up on their contributions to our rich history.
FR. MAURICE IN HOME GATHERINGS:
If you are interested in hosting an in-home potluck
gathering of about 10-15 parishioners, please
contact Jane Powers at (206) 979-9719. The
purpose is for Father to meet us in an informal
setting.
Our Sunday Visitor has published a Lenten
booklet of Archbishop J. Peter Sartain’s
columns. The archbishop is providing the book,
“A Lenten Pilgrimage: Journeying with Jesus,” as
a free gift to everyone. The booklets are available
on the back tables, please help yourself to one and
feel free to take a few to share with family and
friends this Lenten season.
Guidelines for Lent
Good Friday, April 3, 2015, is a day of fast and
abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of
abstinence.
Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three
traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and
catechumens should undertake these practices
seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation
for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter.
(Code of Canon Law, 1249-1252)
Fasting is to be observed by all eighteen years of
age and older, who have not yet celebrated their
sixtieth birthday. On a fast day one full meal is
allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain
strength, may be taken according to each one's
needs, but together they should not equal another
full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted,
but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all fourteen years of age
and older. On days of abstinence no meat is
allowed. Note that when health or ability to work
would be seriously affected, the law does not
oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and
abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.
Please join us downstairs in the church hall for
fellowship and some healthy & tasty
refreshments every Sunday following the
10:00AM Mass.
