Sunday:
We all know the story of creation which is found in
Genesis. The first story of creation can be found in
Genesis 1:1-31 and 2:2-4. The second story of
creation can be found in Genesis 2:5-14. Chapter 3
in Genesis tells us about the Fall of Adam and Eve.
By Laura Scanlan Chapter 4 tells us about Cain and Abel. Chapter 5
tells us about the descendants of Adam. The
beginning of Chapter 6 tells us that the population of earth was quite
numerous. When Adam and Eve ate the apple men and women were given the
ability to make choices. Men and women were not making many good
choices. God regretted having made man and the animals. He decided to get
rid of everything that he created on earth. Of all of Adam’s descendants, God
only found favor with Noah and his three sons. God tells Noah to build an
ark; he is to take two of all living creatures (male and female) and his family.
It only took six (6) chapters for God to want to get rid of man.
In today’s reading God establishes a new covenant with Noah, his family
and all creation. In this covenant God promises that he will never destroy
earth by the waters of a flood. The symbol of this covenant is a rainbow.
When the rainbow appears in the sky God will remember his covenant with
Noah.
In the second reading written by St. Peter, he reminds us of the story of
Noah and how Noah and his family were saved through water. The story of
Noah prefigured the water of Baptism which removes Original Sin. Jesus died
on the cross for our sins even though He was free from sin.
Mark’s gospel reading is only
three (3) verses long. Jesus has just
been baptized in the Jordon River
by John the Baptist. The Spirit that
descended from heaven when Jesus
was baptized now takes Jesus into
the desert where He remained for
forty days and was tempted by the
devil. Jesus lived among wild
animals (that God created) and was
comforted by angels.
Now what do these readings
mean for us. In His mercy, God
always loves us no matter what we
do. Lent is the preparation time for
remembering all Jesus did for us.
Jesus instituted the Eucharist at the
Last Supper; He suffered and died
on the cross and His glorious
resurrection on Easter morning.

Lent is a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
The Little Black Book is provided to parishioners as a
guide to prayer and can be used from Ash Wednesday
until Easter Sunday.
Officially we abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday,
Good Friday and all Fridays in Lent. There is no age
limit on abstaining from meat.
From the ages of 14 to 59 we are to fast on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. When fasting, a person
is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals
may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal.
This year we are using the Catholic Relief Services
(CRS) Rice Bowl Program. CRS Rice Bowl is one
way Catholics can enhance their Lenten fasting
practice by giving up meals and donating the cost of
those meals to Catholic Relief Services in order to
help those who do not have enough to eat. As I did a
couple of years ago each week I will cook the recipe
featured in the Rice Bowl Lenten Calendar and report
on that recipe. The first recipe is from Tanzania. If
you have not picked up your Rice Bowl yet they are
still available at the entrances of the church.

Junior High:
Our February event will be the popular Kids Against
Hunger service experience hosted by St. John Neumann
in Canton. On the afternoon of Saturday, February 28th
we will gather to learn about the work this program does
to alleviate hunger locally and throughout the world. We
will then work together to package thousands of meals to
be distributed through the program. It is an amazing
experience to see how it all comes together so quickly!
Permission slips will be distributed through the school
and faith formation programs, or you can stop by the
Faith Formation Office to pick up a form.
High School:
Last weekend the teens spent some time at our youth
group meeting processing their experience at Rainbow,
and discussing our upcoming events. We also spent some
time on the subject of love and happiness, which was
timely for the Valentine’s weekend. Some related games
and prizes finished out our time together. We are still
working on finding a system to get our news and updates
out to everyone. The Remind system has been working
for some people, so I encourage you to sign up for that if
you have not already done so. However, we may need to
move to direct texting or emails if that system does not
work. Stay tuned for possible opportunities to work at the
fish fry!
Upcoming Dates of Importance:
· March 1—Meeting 11:30-1:30 in Room 103
· March 15—Meeting 11:30-1:30 in Room 103
· March 20-21—WAYMC Lock-In at St. John

· March 22-25—Parish Mission (providing childcare
services)
Facility Closings
For consistency in determining
facility closings, St. Robert
Bellarmine faith community has
adopted the following guideline:
When our school is closed for
emergency reasons (weather, power
outages, illness…) all daytime
campus activities will be cancelled. Another call will be
made at 4 p.m. to determine the status of the evening
activities. Facility closings will be announced on WWJ
AM 950, WJR AM 760 and on the SRB website school
link / school closing link.

Catholic Social Teaching: The Church’s Best Kept Secret (Part III)
By Laura Scanlan
Part III, Rerum Novarum (On the Concern of Labor, 1891).
As you may recall in the first part of these articles on Catholic Social Teaching, Pope Leo XIII felt that the Church
needed to address the social issues of that time. He rejected Communism but understood why it appealed to the workers.
He also rejected the great disparity between the rich and the poor. His concerns were addressed in his Encyclical letter
Rerum Novarum (On the Concern of Labor, 1891).
In Part III of this article will explain the rights of workers as addressed in the Encyclical Letter.
Right of Workers
Workers need to complete any work that they have agreed to do. They must never destroy the employer’s property nor
resort to violence, riots or any type of disorder. Pope Leo tells them to not follow individuals who make promises and
encourage their hopes. If they do they will “end in useless regrets and grievous loss.” (19) The employer must respect the
workers and not treat them like slaves. Every man is made in the image and likeness of God. There is nothing wrong
with working to make a living. The worker should be respected as a human being and not seen only as a means to an
end.
The employer should allow his workers to “have time for his religious duties.” (20) The employer should allow time
so that workers can spend time with their families. The employer should not expose his workers “to corrupting
influences and dangerous occasion” where the worker can “squander his earning.” (20) Workers should not be made to
do work that is beyond their strength. Workers should be assigned to tasks that are equal to their sex and age. An
employer should be just to all of his workers and not only seen as a way to make a profit. Workers should be paid for the
work they do at the rate of pay they agreed to work. The employer should not cheat his workers out of their pay or
charge outrageous rates on money loaned to them. If these practices were followed by the employers they would never
have to worry about violence from their workers.
The worker’s true home is in heaven. It makes no difference what an individual has or does not have while on earth.
What is important is that whatever you received by God should be used appropriately. Just by having great wealth, land
and an industry will not get you into heaven.
Part IV will address the r ole of pr ivate pr oper ty (look for continuing articles on the second and four th Sundays of
every month.)
Ladies of SRB News
Thanks to everyone who came out to feast before the fast at the Shrove Tuesday
Pancake Supper. We would like to acknowledge Maureen Franklin, JoAnn
Munson and all the volunteers who helped make it a success. Finally, we want to
express our appreciation to the Men’s Club for preparing the awesome pancakes
and taking down the tables at the end of the night. Great teamwork!
Fish Fry season has begun and the Ladies of SRB will once again be a part of the
action. We will be sponsoring a bake sale during the March 6th Fish Fry and working the serving
line on March 27th. We are in charge of bussing tables every week with support from the school
children. Emails have circulated with an online scheduling link to volunteer for the bake sale and
bussing duties. Members who don’t have email can contact Lisa Kirk for more information.
The Ladies of SRB will be at the school open house today if you are interested in becoming a
member. Representatives will be available to answer any questions or concerns regarding
membership, dues, and upcoming activities. You can also contact Lori Gerrity (Membership
Chair) at 313-727-2519 or Lisa Kirk (President) at 734-421-6703 or email [email protected].

First Sunday of Lent

It’s Fish Fry Season! Continuing this coming Friday, February 27th
and the following five Fridays in Lent, the SRB Men’s Club will be
hosting the annual Fish Fry Fridays in the activities building. The
dinners will be served from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. while supplies last.
This year we have kept the same basic menu with the all you can eat
fried or baked cod dinner, the rotation of weekly specials and the soup
and salad bar. When you order a fish dinner or the weekly special, you
now have a choice of any three side dishes to complete your meal.
Please see the menu for all your side dish options. There will be a total
of nine different options to choose from each week.
One of the things to remember is that your patronage not only supports the SRB Men’s Club, you also support the
various groups, school children & clubs of the parish because they all work very hard to serve you and earn some well
deserved funds for their endeavors.
New this year is the addition of our version of a drive thru. Enter the back parking lot off of Westfield & follow the
ropes to a tent and a car port where we will take your order and payment, radio your order into the kitchen and dedicated
runners will get your order together for you. After you pay at the tent, follow the ropes to the back of the gym and we
will get you your order as soon as we have it together for you.
Finally we do want to thank you in advance for your participation in this parish wide event. We also want to remind
you that while fellowship is an important part of
our experience here at SRB, we will be serving
750 – 850 meals each week in a facility that can
hold only 400. We certainly do not want to rush
anybody but please be mindful of others that
may be waiting for a seat to enjoy their meals
also.

Cardinal Sports News
The regular season basketball schedule wraps up this
weekend with home games on Saturday beginning at 9:00
a.m. Our visitors will include our cross-town rivals from
St. Valentine as well as teams from St. Linus and St.
Francis Cabrini. This will also be our traditional Parent
Appreciation Day. Please make plans to be at your
child’s game on that day. As always, be sure to check the
updated schedule on the Athletics page of the SRB web
site as game times often change due to conflicts with all
of the various activities our players are involved in as
well as those of the coaches both at St. Robert and our
opposing teams. Stop by for a game or two to support our
teams.
As always, your help is always appreciated at our home
games in such areas as concessions and admissions.
Please check your children’s game schedules so that you
can lend a hand before or after their games so that you
don’t miss any of the action. We are using a new online
scheduling program to make it easier to volunteer to help
out at the games. Use the following link to SignUp genius
to find a time slot that is right for you.

the families of the players. The link is available on the

in the meal preparation of the St.
Christine’s Soup Kitchen in Detroit.
Tuesday, February 24, 2015 will be the
next meal provided by the Parishioners of
St. Robert.
The meal is completed in 2 stages…meal prep work
will be done on the Monday, February 23rd from 6:30
p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the gym kitchen. Everything is
provided, just show up. On Tuesday morning everyone
meets in the Church parking lot at 8:30am to drive over
to St. Christine’s to finish the meal. Your help is needed
for either or both stages of cooking.
Desserts are also needed. Dessert
donations will be collected in the gym
kitchen between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
on Monday.
All 3 of our JV teams will be competing in the St
Anselm post-season tournament beginning February 27th.
All teams have received their schedules. Be sure to check
with your coaches for any potential changes as well as
the bracket progression. Our varsity teams will find out in
the next few days if they qualified for the CYO playoffs.
There are still several possible scenarios that could allow
our teams a spot in the post season tournament.
We are still accepting participants for our 2015 track
team. As in past years, this will be our only spring sport.
The spring season will begin in mid-March and conclude
in May.
Upcoming Activities:
· Basketball Season: Final Home games February 21st
· Track Season: Begins in mid-March
The Athletics page of the parish website contains information
regarding athletic activities available to the children of our
school and parish. The web site can be found at
www.strobertbellarmine.com. Click on Athletic Programs or
Quick Reference on the left side of the page under “A.D.
Notes”. As always, if you have any questions or suggestions,
please contact the athletic office at (313) 937-1530 ext.134, email us at: “[email protected]” or drop a note in the collection
basket.
