From the Pastor’s Desk
The ashes we receive on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday are an annual
reminder of the passage of time and our
constant need of repentance. The ashes
were made from burning the palms blessed on the
previous Palm Sunday. We had waved palms in praise
of Christ at the beginning of Holy Week, and now we
must call to mind humbly that we have failed him many
times since then.
Centuries ago it was the custom at the beginning of
Lent to sprinkle ashes on public sinners as they came
to the church in repentance. Now we acknowledge publicly that we are sinners and in need of repentance.
Carrying the ashes on our foreheads indicates our willingness to do penance for our sins. The words used as
the ashes are placed provide a timely reflection:
“Remember that you are dust and to dust you will
return.” or “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the
Gospel.”
Ashes will be distributed at Mass on February 18th,
Ash Wednesday, at 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Ashes
will be distributed on Ash Wednesday at Sky View,
Villa Maria and Southgate, and to as many shut-ins as
possible.
Fast and Abstinence Regulations
1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to
abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the
Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.
2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 60 years of
age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday.
3. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, only one full
meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals,
sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according
to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal
another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously
affected, the law does not oblige.
4. Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from
these prescribed minimal penitential practices.
Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the
Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.
Operation Rice Bowl
In 1975, Catholic Relief Services founded Operation
Rice Bowl. This Lenten program invites people to place a
cardboard container (given out in parishes) in their homes,
and put in it the money that’s saved because of their fasting and the things they give up for Lent. Why a ricebowl?
As a reminder that two-thirds of the world’s inhabitants live
on half-a-bowl of rice each day.

IRON COUNTY FOOD PANTRY
As Valentines Day approaches, the Iron County
Food Pantry volunteers appreciate the concerns
that so many Iron County residents show toward the
less fortunate residents of Iron County with an abundance of donations to the Treasure Room which
subsidizes the utilities in the building so that the
money meant to purchase food, goes to purchase
food. We thank the Daughters of Isabella for their
generous financial donation along with Joseph
Kryzewski, M/M Daniel Lucas, of Marquette, MI and
a former St. Mary’s parishioner for their financial
donations. May God bless you all.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER
Be a Good Steward of the Lenten Season
The Lenten season prepares us for the celebration of
Easter. It is a time for Christians to embrace prayer,
fasting, and almsgiving in a more concerted way. For
some it is a time of healing, an opportunity to repair
their spiritual brokenness. For others it is simply a good
time to cultivate their spiritual lives in a more disciplined manner.
The goal of Lenten practices is to prepare ourselves
to enter into the paschal mystery of Holy Week with a
more humble spirit and determination to follow Jesus
Christ. This ancient triad of prayer, fasting and almsThe Treasure Room has a beautiful selection of Prom giving offers wonderful spiritual benefits. Being a good
