Mission Statement
We, the Parish Family of Saint Valentine, are a Roman Catholic Community within the local church of the Archdiocese of Newark. The
celebration of the Mass and the Sacraments is central to our identity as a parochial community which worships God in fellowship with family,
neighbors and friends. Sharing the Eucharist empowers us to be a sign of the Kingdom of God present among us, yet ever becoming more a
reality, as we follow Christ, proclaiming his Gospel and witnessing to his teaching. Through liturgical worship and the ministries of the Church,
we are enabled to love each other in our service of God. THEREFORE, we the Parish Community of Saint Valentine, are dedicated to serving
others within and outside ourselves, as we strive to deepen our own commitment to the Lord and to announce the Good News of salvation in
Christ.

A MESSAGE FROM
THE PASTOR’S DESK
Dear Parishioners:
This Sunday’s short Gospel tells us that the Holy
Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert where He
remained for forty days and was tempted by
Satan.
As we begin our forty days of Lent, we are
reminded of Jesus’ forty days in the desert and
also the forty years in the desert of Moses and the
people of Israel. God had led them to journey in
the desert so that they would come to know what
in in their hearts; that they were a stiff necked
people who were unwilling to do the will of God.
And yet God gave the people chance after chance
to convert and repent of their sinful ways;
because as much as they relied on God, God
provided food and water, defended them and
fought the wars for them. Likewise, in our forty
days of Lent, we may come to know what is in
our hearts, that we may turn back to God, and
allow Him to be intimate with our souls,
renewing us through our spiritual exercise of
Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.
Notice that when Jesus was forty days in the
desert, the devil could not fool Him because there
is no sinfulness in Jesus. Jesus is single-hearted
in doing the will of God the Father, and is not
attracted to the carnal and passing things of the
world. That’s why we need to be of one heart
with Jesus, so that we can also be one with the
Father.
Jesus tells us this Sunday to “Repent, and believe
in the Gospel.” Because the gospel - the
teachings of Jesus are life-giving and not liferuining. Turn back to God from our selfishness
and trust in His Word. This is the opportune time!
Perhaps God has something special in store for
you this Lent.
- Fr Basil.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
“After John had been arrested, Jesus came to
Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God.” MARK
1:14.
Do you ever think about how difficult it must
have been for Jesus to come into Galilee,
knowing that John had just been arrested for
teaching the same message that Jesus was
proclaiming. It must have taken great love
and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had
sent Him here on earth to do. In the same
way, following a life of stewardship takes great
love and trust from us. We must be willing to
surrender completely to God, trusting that
God will always give us all that we need to
fulfill His plan for us.
