Important Dates In February:
Feb. 2nd to Feb. 5th – Gov't Exams
Feb. 4th & Feb. 5th – Double Block Days
Feb. 6th – Project Completion Day & end of Term 2
Feb. 9th – Family Day - No School

Feb. 20th – Professional Development - No School
Feb. 24th – Report Card Distribution
To the students, parents, staff, community, alumni, and friends of Sa-Hali Secondary…
Semester 1 has come to a close, and the school year is half-way done. Judging by the longer days, warmer temperatures,
and melting snow, I am thinking that in a few short weeks, we will be back on the golf courses and grills before we know it.
What does that groundhog know anyway?
Currently, the entire province is undergoing a revamp of the student information management system used by high
schools. Due to the changeover, the entire system will be down for a few days beginning on the 5th of February. As a
result, Semester One Report cards will be delayed--students will be receiving their Semester One Report cards on
February 24th. Should you have any questions about your student’s progress, please feel free to contact counselors at
the school or email the specific teachers for your student at [email protected] (ie. Mr. Joe Public would be
[email protected]).
Although it is only February, it is the time of year when we begin planning for next year: in the next few weeks, students
will be selecting their courses for 2015-16. It is imperative that students choose their classes wisely, and keep their
graduation plans at the forefront of their selections. As we have found this year, it has been increasingly difficult to move
students from class to class once students have made their selections, so please choose carefully! Should you have any
questions about courses or programs, please make sure that you are in contact with the Sa-Hali Counseling Department
so that you can discuss choices with your student’s counselor.
Graduation is only a few short months away for our Grade 12s. Although this is a very exciting time of year, it is vital that
our graduating class remain focused on their studies, as well as ensuring that they have satisfied all of their graduation
requirements. Graduates must have passed, or be passing, the minimum number of courses required to graduate at the
Semester Two, Term Three Report Card in May in order to take part in graduation ceremonies at the beginning of June. If
there were courses that a student had not passed or completed in Semester One, they need to be in contact with their
counselor as soon as possible. Students who are not passing the required courses will be put under academic review in
order to determine whether they may participate in the commencement and banquet activities. The moral of the story is:
let’s make sure our Grads are passing their courses for graduation.
We wish our students another successful semester!!

the Daybreak Rotary Club. This award is given to a student who has made a positive difference in lives
of others, has demonstrated significant school leadership, and has maintained an above average
academic standing. Well done, Robyn!
Managing Anxiety Through Yoga
Giving students tools to manage stress and anxiety has become more important over the past few
years. Life-long skills such as learning to use deep breathing and basic exercises to calm the body and
mind are helpful as students face life's challenges.
Last year, with the help of our school's Parent Advisory Council, and a Community Link grant, we were
able to offer basic yoga and deep breathing instruction to every Grade 9 and 10 PE class.
Building on this success, this year we're including yoga in our Grade 8 classes. Each Grade 8 student
will have five yoga classes with Charlie Bruce as part of their PE curriculum. To hear more about this
project, visit the link to hear the CBC radio interview with Shelley Joyce.

Academic Intervention
At Sa-Hali Secondary we believe failure is not an option for our students, so we
are committed to taking steps to ensure that students receive all the support
necessary for their success in all classes.
Academic Intervention (AI) is a directed-attendance program for students who are not succeeding in the classroom setting and require
additional time and/or support to complete course related work. After first accessing the available in-school support mechanisms, and
having contacted the parent/guardian, AI involves the classroom teacher referring the student to the AI program, and the student then
being required (by the classroom teacher, with support from Administration) to attend after school sessions until the student is caught
up to the point where they are no longer in danger of failing.
The AI teacher provides support in all academic areas and reports directly to the referring classroom teacher. AI is held on TUESDAY's
and THURSDAY's from 3:00 – 4:00 pm. Additional sessions will be scheduled in the weeks prior to each term end, to give students
every opportunity to meet the prescribed learning outcomes for their course.
On a space available basis, students also have the option to voluntarily attend AI sessions for additional support. Parents may request
their student attend, in consultation with the classroom teacher. Lorraine Balogh runs the AI program and can be contacted at
[email protected] or by calling (250) 374 0861.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP!
Student Leadership ran 3 projects to wrap up January and finish semester 1. Students organized a "Food 4 Food"
campaign raising money and canned food items for the Kamloops Food Bank. Along with approximately 50 cans of food,
students raised $65 for their cause. Project Coordinator, Diana Delwo for “Food 4 Food”, with help from Trevor Frison
and Morgane Fontaine.
Rebecca Belland and Courtney Chisholm ran another successful Spirit Week in
January. Students could be seen dressing up in their favorite hockey jerseys, as
"totally, tacky tourists" and in their best 80's outfits. During one lunch break,
students challenged a group of teachers to a 5v5 basketball game. It started out
as a close match up before the teachers pulled away and won the game 41-26.
Many thanks to Mr. Vosper, Mr. Robertson, Mr. Litt, Mr. Konrad and Dima Pokylov
(filling in for a teacher) for participating in this game. There were many students in
the stands to cheer the game on.
Robyn Macdonald and Leah de Zeeuw hosted a "Toonie Toss for Breast
Cancer" event on January 28th. The girls collected many amazing donations
from local area businesses.
A HUGE SABRE THANK YOU TO THE
FOLLOWING SPONSORS: La Dolcevita Salon, Oya Japanese Restaurant,
Booster Juice, Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt, Red Robin Restaurant, YA Bubble Tea
and Coffee, Sahali Subway, Sahali Tim Hortons, Chapters Book Store, and
Aberdeen Mall. In total, the girls raised $300.45 to donate to the Breast Cancer
Research Foundation.
Pretty amazing for one lunch time event!!
Many teachers have offered their time and expertise to help Leadership students run their events this year. We hope we
have done a good job of finding those individuals after our events to say Thank You. Just in case we missed you, please
accept our appreciate for your support! Without such great staff, our events would not happen!!
