February 2015 Duxbury Doings

Duxbury Doings
February 2015
Greetings from the Director—
A Nationally Accredited
Senior Center
It’s all about love and seeing red this month!
The month starts out with Healthy Heart Day on February 5th!
Wear red; join us for a heart healthy lunch and learn how to keep
your heart in good shape!
Then, on February 11 we will celebrate Valentine’s Day with
lunch and piano entertainment by Gerry Gottschalk. This annual
event is sponsored by the Kingston and Duxbury Kiwanis Club.
Wear red again and enjoy a lovely menu made by Peter.
Reservations are required and normal lunch prices apply.
We will also get to enjoy LOVE LETTERS during a dinner
theater on February 12 beginning at 5:30 PM. Reservations are
required and the cost is $20/pp.
We will end the month with the Friends of the Duxbury COA
LOVETennis Fundraising Event. This event will take place on
February 28; Registration begins at 4:30 PM, with tennis followed by dinner. Proceeds from this event support the expansion
of our supportive day program for members with Alzheimer’s
disease. To sign up call the front desk at 781-934-5774 x 100 or
go to http://www.duxburyseniorcenter.org/ and sign up for the
LOVETennis event using PayPal.
But the love and support doesn’t end there! Our fundraising
events wouldn’t be successful without you! Please consider
attending or volunteering at one of the Friends FUNDRAISING
EVENTS this year!

What is the Circuit Breaker Tax Credit?
POWERFUL TOOLS FOR
CAREGIVERS
Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational series designed to provide you with the
tools you need to take care of yourself while
caring for a family member or friend. This
program helps family caregivers reduce stress,
improve self-confidence, communicate
feelings better, balance their lives, increase
their ability to make tough decisions and
locate helpful resources. The Duxbury Senior Center in collaboration with Cohasset Elder Affairs will offer
this six week class in Cohasset beginning
April 1st 2015.
The Circuit Breaker Tax Credit is a state income tax
credit for eligible Massachusetts residents age 65 or older
who paid rent or real estate taxes during the tax year.
Even though the credit is based on property taxes, the
state government, not the city or town, pays the credit.
The credit is for senior homeowners and renters who
meet income limits and other eligibility requirements.
Homeowners may claim the credit if they paid more than
10% of their total income for real estate taxes, including
water and sewer debt charges. Renters can count 25% of
their rent as real estate tax payments.
You must file a state income tax return to claim the Circuit Breaker Credit, whether or not you have to file otherwise. If your credit is greater than the amount of income
taxes you owe, the state will give you a refund for the
difference. The maximum credit for tax year 2013 is
$1,030.
Please join us on the 3rd Wed. of the month
10:30 – 11:30 for group discussion on pertinent
topics chosen by group members. This is a
“drop-in” group, prior registration is not
necessary. The Group Facilitator is Betty
Whittaker of South Bay Mental Health. Contact

Veterans’ News
February, 2015
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) launched an improved version of the GI Bill Comparison Tool, which
is designed to make it easier for Veterans, Service members and dependents to estimate their GI Bill education
benefits and learn more about VA’s approved college, university and other education and training programs
across the country. It also provides key information about college affordability and value so beneficiaries can
choose the best education program to meet their needs.
The updated version of the GI Bill Comparison Tool has new functionality that can provide personalized
estimate of Post-9/11 GI Bill tuition and fees, housing allowance, and book stipend benefits that would
potentially be paid to the student. The Veteran indicator section now contains new information on schools’
student
Veterans groups, VetSuccess on Campus program and the Yellow Ribbon agreement status.
This is an ongoing effort by the VA to provide accurate data to beneficiaries so that they have the information
they need to make informed choices about VA education benefits and approved programs.
The GI Bill Comparison Tool can be found at:

coaching. Mneme Therapy uses everyday pleasures such as painting to stimulate dramatic
changes in the brain. Coaching sessions will be available by appointment beginning mid-March.
