From the Campus Principals Welcome back to 2015! New Staff A very warm welcome back to school to our new and returning families, we are very pleased to have the opportunity of working with you all. We also have a number of new staff on our campus, some of whom are new to our campus and others new to our College: Mr Burroughs, Ms Wills, Ms Walkerden, Mr Noviello, Ms May, Ms Alkemade who are all new to the College; Ms Reeves, Ms Kumar, Mr Davies, Ms Matsuzaki, Ms Zurawiecki and Ms Caitlyn Parfett who are returning or from another campus. A huge welcome to you all! Year 7 Special Induction Program In recognition that starting secondary school can be challenging we have established a special 3 day program which culminates in the Iron Form Competition. The idea with the first three days is for students to become more familiar with how our campus works and to bond with their Home Group and Home Group teacher. The Iron Form Day involves all of the Home Groups competing against each other with banners, songs, mottos/logos all depicting what their Home Group means to them. Plus there is fierce competition in fun relays. This year’s winning Home Group was 71E – Congratulations! Photos All students had the opportunity for their photo to be taken on February 12 th; if for some reason this didn’t occur there is a catch up day on February 27th at our Delahey campus. Students will be bussed to have their photo taken and returned to campus. A letter was sent home advising how to order photos for the family if you require; the date for this is February 20th. Scholarship Presentations On Feb 5th we had a ceremony to award our Year 7 scholarships and re-award our Year 8 student scholarships. The scholarships are awarded for Academic Excellence, Performing Arts and Leadership/Community. This year our scholarship winners were: (Year 7) Summer Elsalim and Spencer Vaughan (Academic Excellence); Joshua Iglesias and Aimee Jungfer (Leadership/Community) and Emily Watson and Caterina Hacket (Performing Arts). Our Year 8 scholarship winners who were re-awarded their scholarships were Sarah Lee, Nathan Bogalho, Nikki Moutafis, Stacey Rouvalis and Jessica Refahi. Congratulations to you all. Testing Our Year 7 students have had a number of tests administered and a few more to come. The TORC testing enables us to put students in the most appropriate Literate Practices class to help improve their reading skills and general literacy. Students in Years 7 and 8 this year for the first time have undertaken an online writing test which has given very detailed feedback on their strengths and areas for improvement. It will assist teachers to target the next improvement area and we will see an improvement in writing skills. Our year 7 students will also have the PAT-R and PATM tests administered so we can quickly find the beginning point to continue teaching for each individual student. Some of the testing has been as a result of our involvement with Melbourne University to target writing improvement across the College. If you are interested please feel free to contact us for more information. Immunisations Parents with students in Years 7, 8 and 10 are reminded that all forms for immunisations are due back before next Monday (February 23 rd) which is immunisation day. Parent Teacher Meet and Greet Thursday, February 19th Following feedback from our parent community we have changed the format of our ‘old’ Parent Information Nights and will have one night for all students 7 -10 with an opportunity to see work completed by students, talk with staff and gain a better understanding of the work that is required for your child. If your child’s Home Group teacher hasn’t already rung to offer a personalised invitation yet, plus the letter sent home inviting you then please consider this a personalised invitation – we would love to see as many people attend as possible. Hands on Learning (HOL) As a college we have an exciting new engagement program to be able to offer to some of our students. The Hands on Learning Program is as its name suggests, an opportunity for student from Year 8-10 to experience a different style of learning on one day per week. The Program will be based on Kings Park for 2015. An information session for selected students and parents will take place this week. …/continued page 2 Please note this Newsletter is available online: www.copperfieldcollege.vic.edu.au Issue 1 16 February 2015 Dates and Events: Immunisations Years 7, 8, 10 23 February Swimming Carnival 24 February Labour Day 9 March College Council 16 March Athletics Carnival 18 March Discovery Evening 19 March Parent Teacher Student Interviews 24 March End Term 1 27 March First Day Term 2 13 April Year 7 Camp Immunisations Years 7 and 9 22-24 April 29 April COLLEGE PHONE NUMBERS Kings Park Campus Ph: 9365 4111 Fax: 9365 4999 Delahey Campus Ph: 9307 5555 Fax: 9307 5444 Sydenham Campus Ph: 9361 3888 Fax: 9361 3899 The Mission Western Bulldogs are proud to adopt Copperfield College as a Bulldog Friendly School Page 2 Issue 1 Continued from page 1 Swimming Sports Next week is our College swimming sports on Tuesday March 24th; all students are expected to attend school on that day, permission notes have been sent home. Let’s hope for a lovely sunny day without being too hot. As always a very busy start to the year! There are lots of opportunities for parents and students to become involved in the campus - remember you can contact us at any time with queries or suggestions. Pick Up and Drop Off at School Could parents please be mindful of not blocking driveways into and out of the Child Minding Centre and Retirement Village when dropping off and picking up? Would parents also remind their children to use the supervised crossing; this is for their safety. Some parents are double parking and this makes crossing the road even more hazardous. The staff car parks are not for parent pick up, the Gym car park is at times quite dangerous; staff often need to go to another campus for after school meetings. Thank you. Sue Minkevicius and Mark Nugent Campus Principals B & K Team News B and K Team staff extend a warm welcome to our students and families. Issue 1 Page 3 Would You Like to Host a Japanese Student? Excursion Forms Do you have an excursion but forgotten the permission form? You can get a copy of all excursion forms from the Copperfield College Website. Copperfield College is very fortunate to have a Sister School relationship with Fuji Junior High School, in Fuji City, Japan. This relationship aims to foster cultural understanding and friendship between the young people of Japan and Australia. Every second year we have a group of students and staff visit Fuji Junior High School in Japan. Every other year they visit us. In 2014, eighteen students and three teachers from Copperfield College visited Japan and Fuji Junior High School in September. In 2015, we expect a similarly sized group of students and teachers to come to Australia and Copperfield College for approximately 5 days between August 12 and August 20. During this time the Japanese students stay in Australian homes with our students. Whilst in Australia, the Japanese students attend our classes at Copperfield College and experience life in Australian homes. It is a wonderful experience for families to welcome a Japanese student into their home and be treated as family members. They and their hosts will also have the opportunity to participate in excursions and other celebrations. Copperfield College students have made many friends from our Sister School over the years and developed a better understanding and appreciation of each other’s lifestyles and cultures. Next year we expect our Sister School relationship will continue with our students visiting Japan. If you are interested in this fantastic experience and wish to host a Japanese student, please fill in the form below and return it with a parent/carer signature to your Campus Office. We have noticed that our current Year 8 students have made the transition from Year 7 with ease and confidence. The Year 7 students have already experienced some of what Secondary School has to offer; they have learnt how to open their combination locks on their lockers, they are comfortable reading their timetables and have settled into all their subject classes with ease and confidence. Year 7s recently participated in our Iron Form Day. It was a day filled with team building activities. Home groups created banners, mottos, mascots and songs that represent the classes’ team spirit. There was a trivia session followed by a sausage sizzle. To finish the day there were several fun races. Term 1 is a very eventful time; Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 meet and greet is on Thursday 19th February. On Tuesday 24th February the Year 7 – 10 students at Kings Park and Sydenham will be going to Swimming Sports at Oak Park Aquatic Centre. Jenny Zahra Careers Advisor Issue 1 Page Parent Portal Last year the College launched a new method of communicating with parents/carers. The College Parent Portal provides parents/carers with up to date information about your child’s attendance, lesson by lesson, as the classes are marked by teachers. It will also give parents/carers access to their child’s timetable, the names of their teachers, and electronic copies of interim and semester reports when they are published. Eventually, it will show achievements and awards that students receive, and we will be exploring its use to provide access to details of classwork due and other expectations that need to be met, as well as being used to communicate news items. The Parent Portal is accessed through any internet browser on any computer connected to the internet. Sydenham Campuses and on Wednesday March 25 for our Delahey Campus. Parents/carers were informed of their personal login details and the steps involved in accessing both the portal and the interview booking system in 2014. Parents/carers of students who joined the College in late 2014 or in 2015 will receive their details and access instructions by mail over the next three weeks. Note that logins are based on the parent/carer contact information on record at the College so please contact your Campus Office if this information needs updating. Please contact myself or any member of the Principal Team with any queries, concerns or feedback about the parent portal. Mark Nugent The first major task of the Parent Portal in Campus Principal -Sydenham 2015 will be to manage appointments for our Parent Teacher Student Interviews to be held on Tuesday March 24 for our Kings Park and DEECD Rules About Student Attendance At School 5 Payments to the College A reminder if you wish to pay your subject charges or excursion costs, you can phone any of the campus offices and simply provide your credit card details. Other methods of payment are by cash, cheque, EFTPOS and now BPay Please call any campus office to obtain your reference number. Biller Code: 87361 Reference No: Please contact any campus office to obtain your reference number. Student Attendance / Absence The Sydenham Campus has introduced a Student Attendance/Absence message hot line. If your child is going to be absent for any reason, Parents/Carers should phone Lorraine on 9361 3891 and leave a message with your child’s name, home group, reason and dates of absence. Regular attendance is essential to make sure that your child’s learning is not disrupted. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has introduced rules and laws governing student attendance at school. They came into effect on March 1, 2014. We thought it worthwhile to communicate the changes to our community. Reminder: Picking Up Siblings from Sydenham Primary Normal parental responsibilities have not changed noticeably and are as per Copperfield College’s Attendance Policy which is in the student diary. The one exception is that the Principal determines whether the reasons provided for non-attendance are reasonable. And if they are deemed not to be, further referrals take place. Students are reminded that if they are picking up a younger child or siblings from the primary school, they are required to wait on our grounds until the primary school bells goes at 3:30 before entering the grounds. Under no circumstance should Copperfield College students wait outside their siblings’ classrooms. Initially the school will explore ways to support the student to attend school; this may include referrals to outside agencies. Should this not be successful a referral can be made to the newly appointed departmental Student Attendance Officers. Once a referral has been made to this level a process will be put in place which may involve some or all of the following: Sending a School Attendance Notice home, which requires a response. Assessing of the parent/carer response Deciding whether to issue an Infringement Notice Sending an Infringement Notice Bringing proceedings in Court. We hope parents/carers can appreciate these rules are being brought in to further maximize Student Accident Insurance Parents/carers are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers. These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private health insurance. Please check that your child has seen their Campus Computer Technician to have their device configured to use the College network. Year 7 parents/carers who have not yet organised a device for their child are encouraged to do this as soon as possible. The College regards student devices as very important learning tools and students without them are at a disadvantage. Year 10 and Year 12 students are also permitted to BYOD, so long as they have met their obligations regarding the laptop they used last year. A BYOD Guide with a Responsible Use Agreement has been produced for Years 7, 10 and 12. Students in these year levels can have their device registered and connected to the school network when their Agreement has been signed. Please note that all other year levels, Years 8, 9 and 11, are not permitted to BYOD in 2015, since these students are still involved in ongoing laptop lease arrangements. As previously publicized, these students will be able to access BYOD when these lease arrangements finish at the end of 2015 for Years 9 and 11 and at the end of 2016 for Year 8. The College is looking forward to all students using whatever device they are using in a smart, safe and responsible way. If you have any questions about 1:1 Learning or BYOD please contact Mark Nugent at Sydenham, Glenn McLeod at Kings Park or your campus office, who will direct you through to someone who can help you. 6 Media Media students have started the year successfully.
