Prayers of Intercession
For our Church, we pray.
May the Church be renewed by the Good News of Jesus Christ
and the power of the Holy Spirit!
We pray to the Lord.
For those who look to us, we pray.
May each of us really see with open hearts and recognise who it is we are looking at,
to realise their value and the importance and gift of their life.
We pray to the Lord.
For our community, we pray.
May we come to know and share in the love that God has for every person.
We pray to the Lord.

Dear
Parents, Students and Friends
Our Season of Lent has arrived! Ash Wednesday 18 February, coincided with
our College Opening Mass. Our Chaplain, Fr Rafter, celebrated Mass for our
community, and members of our Student Leadership Team distributed the
ashes. It was a beautiful liturgy and everyone involved in the preparation and
participation are to be congratulated. At the end of the Mass, our Peer Support
Leaders were inducted and blessed by Fr Rafter, as were the new College
Candle and House Candles.
The Welcome to Year 7 Parents, held last Tuesday evening was a great
success! Teachers of Year 7, Homeroom teachers and College Leadership
Team were introduced. Year 7 coordinator Mrs Star commented on how well
the students have settled into routines and Assistant Principal Ms Scoble took
everyone through our website with particular reference to our assessment
calendar that parents and students can access at any time. My thanks to
parents for their support and to our Year 11 Hospitality students and Mrs
Trembath for providing a delicious supper!
Last night, the first College Social took place. I would like to congratulate the
Student Leadership team for their excellent organisation and also thank the
students who clearly enjoyed the evening. They were a delight to watch,
spending time with each other in such a fun loving manner.
The first Year 12 2015 HSC Support Evening will be held on Thursday, 26
February, at 7pm. Marian has been holding these sessions for a number of
years and they have proven to be important in preparing students for the
academic challenges ahead.

Learning and Teaching News
HSC Support Evening – Thursday 26th February 2015
We are holding our first HSC Support Evening for the year next Thursday 26th February at 7pm in
the Learning Centre. Year 12 students and parents are invited to attend.
The evening will involve a rotation through three sessions:

Building effective summaries to ensure exam success

Organising a study timetable and utilising Board of Studies resources

Tertiary education and career options
We look forward to seeing you there. These support evenings are one of the many initiatives we
attribute our excellent HSC results to. They provide essential support to students and families to
ensure that all parties are adequately informed and prepared for the year.
ACER PAT Tests
Next week, all Year 7 students will be participating in ACER PAT Tests for literacy and numeracy.
Marian Catholic College, in line with the Wagga Wagga Diocese, are adopting and using the PAT tests
to investigate and diagnose student learning and to monitor progress over time. The purpose of this
testing is to provide another source of data for our teachers to target student learning needs and to
move students forward. The PAT tests have been embraced by many schools to provide immediate,
timely, nationally norm-referenced data on student achievement. Schools use the PAT tests to
supplement information received from NAPLAN testing, school-based assessment and teacher
judgements. Some of the advantages reported by schools include:



the opportunity to interrogate the data to identify patterns of responses for individual students
and groups of students;
analysis of data to inform teaching and learning programs; and
use of results to report growth in skills over time.
The testing of Year 7 next week will involve two 40 minute tests that are taken online.

Mathematics
PAT Maths assesses number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability in
multiple-choice format. The assessments also address the mathematical processes of
understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning. The skills assessed by each question
are mapped against the Australian National Curriculum for Mathematics.

Reading
PAT Reading Comprehension assesses retrieving directly stated information, interpreting
explicit information, interpreting implied information and reflecting on texts in multiplechoice format. These skills reflect comprehension skills described in the Australian National
Curriculum for English.
Should you have any further questions about the ACER PAT Tests, please feel free to contact me on
69692400.

Caritas Australia's Project Compassion 2015
Project Compassion 2015 throws a spotlight on global food issues, focusing on the ways
which Caritas Australia is empowering the world's poorest people to establish sustainable
food sources for life, that relieve them of the fear of hunger and allow them to develop
new, improved income streams for a better future.
Over Lent, Marian will be fundraising to support this wonderful cause. Teams will be
divided into Year groups and we will challenge each year group to raise the most money.
Caritas collection boxes will be placed in Homerooms, as well. So if you can spare some
loose change, please send it in with your child.
Food is essential for all life, yet many of the world's poorest people do not have access to
reliable food sources. Our donations can provide poultry manure for 120 acres, so that
farmers can fertilise their crops in Fiji, Nepal and Indonesia.

LOCKERS
Lockers are available at $20.00 for the whole year. Students are required to
supply their own locks to ensure safety of items stored.
On Friday, Feb 13 all Year 7 gathered for their first Community Day. For year 7 our
theme is We are Gifted and the focus is to get the students to look for their gifts and
to find the gifts in others. The day was a mixture of group games, quiet reflection,
peer support activities and a liturgy. The students are to be commended for the great
enthusiasm they brought to every activity which contributed to making the day so
enjoyable. The first peer support session was a highlight of the day with the students
dressing up in a costume created out of newspaper. There were some highly original
and flamboyant designs. It was a fantastic, positive start to year 7 and I look forward
to getting to know the students and discovering their many gifts.
T Star
Year 7 Pastoral Coordinator
On Friday year 7 had our Community Day and it was very fun. First, when we
came to school we were thinking it was an ordinary day but after homeroom we
went to the hall and were welcomed by Ms Star and our Homeroom teachers.
We were all given a playing card but had no idea why. We soon realized we
were playing a big game of cards. We had to find people whose cards matched
ours, get in to different groups and sort out our cards. Next was a big skipping
contest, trying to get everyone through the rope, which was fun. After lunch we
had our liturgy for “We are Gifted”, it was inspirational. After recess we got to
meet our peer support leaders who were very nice and cheerful. Friday was
amazing and I wish we could do it all again.
Thank you to Ms Star and our Homeroom teachers for a wonderful community day.
