SPRING INTO LENT
March often sees winter becoming spring and in this month we continue our journey
through Lent.
Lent is like - a springtime for our spiritual lives, a time of reflection and renewal as we
look forward to the celebration of the Good News of the Passion and Resurrection of
Christ.
It is not your doing or mine that causes the Spring! That is how the world is made,
one season makes way for another. And everything on earth is linked together so that
spring "happens" - plants grow; everything gets warmer (hopefully!) as the earth
moves closer to the sun, and people cheer up!
Something similar is going on in our spiritual lives. But we have a choice - not of
whether spring can happen but whether we allow it to change us. God longs to work
in us and with us, so let's welcome that transformation firstly by being willing to allow
God to work rather than insisting on our own independence and then doing what we
can, to be in the right place at the right time, for us to be changed by him so that we
grow in faith.
The church calendar moves on in Lent. Just as the shops started displaying Christmas
merchandise from early summer so too you could buy your Easter eggs before Lent
had even started!! We often want to cut out the waiting and jump straight to the main
event. But the time of waiting can be such a richly productive one. For many people
Lent is associated with giving something up. It is seen as an opportunity, perhaps, for
kicking that unwanted habit, for finally going on that long-intended diet, or for
denying oneself those unnecessary extra luxuries. All such acts of discipline may have
their place, but they give a very one-sided view on this season for, if anything, it
should be about taking something on; committing oneself, in the manner of Jesus, to
going the extra mile. That doesn't mean taking work on for work's sake, rather, it is
about resolving to follow Christ more faithfully, a determination to give him our
wholehearted discipleship. It might mean more disciplined devotion, perhaps more
practical loving service, maybe more effective witness, or possibly the offering of
previously unused gifts. Whatever it is, Lent encourages us to give something back to
the one who gave us everything.
Consider today what Christ has done for you, then ask what you can do for him, and
then use Lent as an opportunity to respond in a way that makes a difference for you.
May we seek to grow deeper in our discipleship this Lent.
Blessings

SOLE BAY ALPHA
Christians Together in Southwold & District are hosting an Alpha course this
spring/summer.
The Alpha Course is a 10 week practical introduction to the Christian faith. It
started in the early 90's at Holy Trinity Church Brompton, London and has been a huge
success, so much so that that last year it was being run in over 8000 churches in Britain
and in over 130 countries worldwide.
What is an Alpha Course?
It is an opportunity to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed, non-threatening, low
key, friendly and fun way. Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or too
hostile. Listen, learn, discuss and discover. Ask anything. The course consists of a
series of talks (by local church Ministers) looking at topics such as "Who is Jesus?" and
"Why and How Do I Pray?" After each talk there are small groups for discussions.
Who is Alpha For?
Alpha is for people wanting to explore Christianity, new Christians, and those who
want to refresh their faith. In summary, Alpha is for anybody!
Do think and pray about who you might invite. If you have done Alpha before, bring
someone else along or, be part of the team that offers welcome and hospitality.
Our local Alpha course starts on Wednesday 22 April 7.15pm at St.Margaret's
Church, Reydon (The first evening will include a meal). If you are interested and
would like to book a place please add you name to any of the sign-up sheets in local
churches from the end of March or contact Revd Rich Henderson 01502 722192 email:
[email protected].

BACK IN BUSINESS
Blythburgh's popular monthly cafe and
mini-market is back after its winter break.
It is held on the mornings of the first
Friday of the month, so please join us on
27 March from 10.30 to 12.30, for coffee,
cake and the chance to buy handcrafted
goods.
HAPPY COUPLES
We look forward to welcoming 12 couples
who have chosen Blythburgh Church for
their wedding services between April and
October. This increase has arisen partly
because of major renovations at St.
Edmund's, Southwold, but other couples
also have a long-standing family connection with Blythburgh. Look out for the
swirling confetti across the marshes (biodegradable of course!).
MUSICAL NOTES
Blythburgh and Wangford Churches are
delighted to announce that we have
received a donation totalling £9000 from
Music in Country Churches as a result of
our wonderful musical weekend in Blythburgh last August and the generosity of
the participating artists. After the deduction of expenses, this will be split proportionately between the two churches. A big
thank you to everybody who took part in
the preparations, and those from across
the Sole Bay Team who helped with stewarding, or in any other way. It was a
mammoth task, and we are particularly
grateful to Jenny Allen from Blythburgh,
and Sue Ives from Wangford and their
teams of helpers.
KEEP ON GLOWING
Last month Holy Trinity launched a
support scheme, asking people to sponsor
the popular floodlighting of the church (it
costs £100 a month just for the electricity).
For £20 per week anyone can choose a
specific week to sponsor the lights. To
take up this opportunity, please pop into
the Blythburgh village shop or the
church, and pick up a sponsorship form.
TIME OUT
The Revd Malcolm Doney, the Associate
Priest of Holy Trinity, Blythburgh is
taking a nine-month sabbatical from his
church duties, from 1 April to 31
December 2015. He will still be around
and about in the village, but he will not be
available to undertake specific church
functions and services. We wish him well,
as he takes this break.

on Sunday were excellent and add in the
services at 9.30 am and 6 pm on Sunday
which were truly inspirational with the
whole congregation (large) joining in to
the full was uplifting and magnificent.
The work of the craftsmen (for that is
the only way to describe them) who
completed the works provided us with a
setting which would be hard to equal.
Then there were the flowers, the soup
and cake makers, the team work behind
the scenes, so much to enjoy! Plus the
children's model of the church, I do hope
you took time to look at it, a real masterpiece of which they should be proud!
So HUGE thank-you's to all involved in
the organising and to Rev Rich for his
inspired leadership. They worked so
hard to achieve this as well as the lead-up
and carrying out of the re-ordering.
FROM BISHOP DAVID'S BLOG
Wow! What a good job Rich Henderson
and the people of Reydon Church have
made of their reordering. Sanctuary
cleared and new seats and altar rail put
in. Great new tiled floor. Walls painted,
new lighting and sound system, new
organ, new vestments. And the church
was heaving (and full of smoke!) as we
rededicated it all this morning. Jacob's
Ladder was our reading, and all the renovations offer a all spiritual leg up for
regulars and visitors. But how can we be
sure it's for real? Going to make a real
difference? The ladder needs securing at
both ends. Into the reality of Jesus Christ,
his life, his astounding teaching, his
death, his resurrection. And into the reality of reaching out into the world around
us in all its need. Are we each doing both
of those! Now that is a rededication that
will make a difference. We, you can
change the world!
FESTIVAL THANKS
Thank you to all who supported the
Reydon Church Festival weekend and
joined in celebrating completion of the
reordering. Huge thanks to all who worked so hard in welcoming and serving
others over the three days, to all the
singers, musicians who performed and all
involved in two very special acts of
worship.
Revd Rich.

The well-known weather proverb,
"March comes in like a lion and goes out
like a lamb" has been in common place
since the latter part of the 17th. Century.
Already this year, we have experienced a
variety of weather conditions.
There are a number of significant days
in the church's calendar which are celebrated this month. Two Patron saints are
remembered; St. David of Wales, a sixthcentury monk and bishop, on Sunday, 1st.
March and, on 17th. March, St. Patrick of
Ireland c.390 - c.461.
Mothering Sunday occurs on the fourth
Sunday in Lent, 15th. March. One of the
earliest references is from a diary of
Richard Symonds, published in 1644.
"Every mid-Lent Sunday is a great day in
Worcester, when all the children and godchildren meet at the head and chief of the
family and have a feast. They call it
'Mothering - Day.' " This is not to be
confused with Mother's Day which was
first suggested in 1907 by Miss Anna
Jarvis, a schoolteacher in Philadelphia. In
Britain, the new Mother's Day got tangled
up with the existing Mothering Sunday
and for sometime the two existed side by
side. It is probably true that Mother's Day
has gained the upper hand today.
There will be a service of Holy
Communion at St. Lawrence Church at
3p.m. on Sunday 15th. March, Mothering
Sunday, also known as Refreshment
Sunday. By some it is referred to as
Laetare Sunday, from the anthem 'Laetare'
(Rejoice). Flowers may be placed in
church and children give bunches of
flowers to their mothers. The Rev'd Rich
Henderson will be the Celebrant. All are
welcome.

filling the space like an intricate metal

possible to use St Edmunds in a limited
way for services by using the south aisle
and Lady Chapel.
Whilst the scaffolding has been going
up the church congregation has met in

PARISH NEWS (...continued)
everyone at Southwold Methodist
Church for their warm welcome and kind
hospitality during what is quite a
challenging time for everyone at St
Edmunds.
During 2015 some of the big services
that traditionally take place in St
Edmunds will not be able to do so. The
first of these is the ecumenical service on
Good Friday, which this year will take
place in Southwold United Reformed
Church on Southwold High Street at
10.00.
Hopefully by the time you read this the
long awaited restoration of the weather
vane will be completed, and that this will
once again adorn the tower.
On 22nd and 23rd January an exhibition
was held in Buckenham Galleries in order
to present the plans for providing new
facilities in the west end of St Edmunds.
Over 160 people attended on the two
days and we received a good number of
comment cards that were positive and
encouraging about the things we hope to
do. It is intended that in due course the
exhibition display boards will be placed
in St Edmund's for visitors to see.
THE CHILDREN'S SOCIETY
The grand total from the annual collection
box count in November was £392.76, an
increase on 2013. These funds go towards
the Society's work and projects; supporting vulnerable children and young
people, such as runaways and young
carers.
If anyone would like to start saving their
small change for The Children's Society,
please telephone Kate Assmann 01502 722

UGGESHALL SCHOOL HALL
Uggeshall School Hall is becoming a buzz
of regular activity - coffee mornings, fish
and chip lunch, gardening club - and
many other ideas are flowing in.
The hall is available for private and
community events for residents and the
wider community. If you have an idea,
first of all check your date with Elaine
Watts
([email protected]).
She will give you a booking form, the
Terms of Use and a list of what is available
for you to use (i.e. number of plates,
teapots, tables etc).
The church will be responsible for the
upkeep of the hall and the provision of
catering items (e.g. cups, plates, teapots,
cutlery etc). Elaine has an inventory and
will also give you a copy of the Terms of
Use. Then it's up to you! We do not have
a team of helpers to publicise and set up
for events. There is expertise around if
you need help and we can all do our bit in
sharing that.
Publicity posters can be put up on the
noticeboards at the church gate and on
the road outside the School Hall. Tony
Watts ([email protected]) is
keeping an email list of those who would
like to receive regular updates about what
is going on so please send him an email
asking to be included.

CHURCH MEETING St Andrew's, Walberswick
Sunday 19th April at 12.15 In Church
At St. Andrew's we're reaping unexpected
benefits from the new church rules on
eligibility for weddings. A second couple,
who do not fulfil the existing conditions
enabling them to hold their wedding
here, has now agreed to worship with us
on a regular basis for 6 months in order to
meet the requirement Simon set down. It
seems to be a win/win situation, since we
will have the pleasure of their company.
The first was from Essex, this couple are
from outer London. I am waiting for a
really dramatic distance next!

An appeal to all shoppers Drink up for Lent
Please support WaterAid along with the
congregation of Wangford Church.
Visit Wangford Village Store where you
can take a free bottle of lovely, clean
water, drink it mindfully and then fill the
bottle with your coins. Make this a
family project to show your children the
importance of having clean water to keep
us all healthy.
Give 5p for every tap you have in your
house and garden.
Give 10p every time you have a shower or
bath.
Give 10p every time you boil the kettle.
Give 20p for every time you replace a glass
of juice, wine or beer with a drink of water.
Or think up your own ways of giving to
help others who do not have the luxury of
clean water. This appeal will support
specific projects to provide water wells in
Ethiopia.
Bring your filled bottles to the
Mothering Sunday service in the church
on Sunday 15 March at 11am or hand
them into the village up until Easter Day.

SHOPPING HABITS CHANGE
How often do you shop for food? These days, chances are that you are buying 'little
and often', popping into your mini-supermarket several times a week, and buying
only what you need for the next couple of days. It is a thrifty way of living; the trend
has helped to reduce food wastage by as much as a fifth, compared with seven years
ago. According to a survey by Waitrose, one in four of us is visiting a 'convenience'
store at least once a day. Perhaps it gives a whole new insight into 'Give us today our
daily bread...' (Luke 11:3)

LENT WORDSEARCH
Lent lasts for 40 days. Sundays in Lent are 'oases'; as Sunday is never a day of fasting,
but a weekly celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. Christians have used Lent as their
'40 days in the wilderness', when they set aside the indulgences of life and instead
look inward, seeking spiritual renewal and growth. Lent looks towards the Cross and
the Empty Tomb, with the assurance of redemption and new life in Christ. The
daffodils in our gardens are golden trumpets to proclaim the wonderful message of
Easter! The English word for Lent is not at all religious; it is an abbreviation of the Old
English word 'lencten', or 'lengthen'. At last
winter is over, and the days are getting longer...

HYMN: The story behind ... Dear Lord and Father of mankind
Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
forgive our foolish ways!
Reclothe us in our rightful mind;
in purer lives thy service find,
in deeper reverence, praise.
In simple trust like theirs who heard
beside the Syrian sea
the gracious calling of the Lord,
let us, like them, without a word,
rise up and follow thee.
...Drop thy still dews of quietness,
till all our strivings cease;
take from our souls the strain and stress,
and let our ordered lives confess
the beauty of thy peace.
This is the nation's second favourite hymn, according to a poll taken by the BBC Songs
of Praise programme in 2013. But it did not originate in the UK, nor did it begin life as
a hymn. It began in the USA, as part of a poem about a drug-induced religious frenzy.
John Greenleaf Whittier had been born in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1807. His
family were part of a pious Quaker community, and so the young John had grown up
in an atmosphere of reverence, of waiting upon God in prayerful silence. Whittier
wanted to be a poet, but his father directed him to journalism instead, in order to be
sure his son could earn a living. Obediently, Whittier took up his pen and began to
write for the papers. He was soon engaged in the fight against slavery, which he called
the 'national crime'. He was frequently abused and criticized for his stand, and found
his solace in turning to his first love, poetry.
In 1872 he wrote a 17 verse 'hymn-poem' called 'The Brewing of Soma'. It was an
attempt to depict the futile ways in which mankind tries to engage with God. The story
line is of priests of the Vedic religion (close to Hinduism) brewing soma, a sacred
ritual drink with hallucinogenic properties. The priests are hoping that Soma will give
them an experience of the divine, but instead they simply get drunk. This failure is
then compared to some Christians' use of "music, incense, vigils drear, And trance, to
bring the skies more near, Or lift men up to heaven!" But all their effort is in vain. It is
mere intoxicated folly.
And so the poem runs for 11 verses. Then, in verse 12, the whole scene changes, and
we are not using props any longer, but simply looking into the loving face of the God
of the Bible. We come to Him in penitence, and are met with grace and love. We
encounter Jesus, and follow Him in obedience. The result is peace, stillness, and
eternal life.
The poem became the hymn in 1884, when Garrett Horder took the poem's final five
verses and made them the hymn we love today. Here in the UK we sing it to the tune
'Repton', by C Hubert H Parry.
