Your wINDOW into virginia politicS A newsletter of the Virginia Public Access Project Spring 2015 At VPAP, We Treat Every Day Like Election Day VPAP TRAFFIC SOARS Precincts Reporting: 2,557 of 2,557 (100.00%) Mark Warner (D) 1,073,565 49.15% Ed Gillespie (R) 1,055,896 48.34% Election Day (1.7 million hits) Typical Day (39,000 hits) On Election Night, early returns suggested a possible U.S. Senate upset that few saw coming. Just as public interest soared, the State Department of Elections website went down. Fortunately, people who tuned to vpap.org were able to follow the returns throughout the night. One person tweeted, “Once again, @vpapupdates proves that it's truly indispensable.” Public interest peaks on Election Day, but the nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project connects Virginians with fact-based information about politics 365 days a year. VPAP weaves together publicly available data – campaign contributions, demographics, lobbyist registrations, and legislation. But VPAP is more than a compilation of facts. What makes VPAP unique is its fiercely nonpartisan approach. We don’t have a dog in any fight. Our singular focus is to foster transparency and provide a window into Virginia politics. In an era of cynicism, VPAP holds to the oldfashioned belief that if you provide people with unbiased information that’s easy to understand, they can reach their own conclusions. That’s why one Virginia newspaper called vpap.org a “remarkable cyberplace” where “voters can learn more about politicians than listening to their stump speeches.” For us, Election Night is the Super Bowl and World Series combined. That’s why we spend weeks planning for the big night. We design maps and graphics that make the results easy to follow. We make sure our systems are robust enough to handle an exponential spike in traffic. But we couldn’t have expected what happened on Nov. 4. The plan was to display results from a data feed updated throughout the night by the State Department of Elections. The stakes were raised when a technical glitch prevented the elections agency from showing the results on its own website. That left vpap.org as the only place where the official results could be seen by the public. Aside from a 15 to 20-minute period when our own servers briefly struggled, we were there providing real-time updates all night long. We crammed a month’s worth of traffic into a 24-hour period (see charts). With the eyes of political observers across the nation focused narrowly on the results in Virginia, VPAP was there as the lead shifted in what turned out to be the closest Senate race in the country. ■ Election Traffic at vpap.org Typical Day Election Day Site Hits 38,640 1.7 million Site Visits 1,791 24,437 Retweets 2 451 @Replies 1 74 Why I Love VPAP “ VPAP is THE source for reliable, timely information about Virginia politics. - Elizabeth Hooper Director of State Relations, Virginia Tech Engaging Citizens in Politics Someone once observed that democracy would work better if everyone read the newspaper each evening. Mission Statement The nonprofit Virginia Public Access Project connects Virginians to nonpartisan information about Virginia politics in easily understood ways. Board of Directors Larry Roberts (Chair) Venable LLP Jay Smith (Vice Chair/Secretary) Capital Results Bill Wilson (Treasurer) Retired, Div. of Legislative Automated Systems Jeff Britt McGuireWoods Consulting Leslie Cheek III Retired Attorney/Lobbyist Aneesh Chopra Hunch Analytics The catch, of course, is that evening papers died out a generation ago. But the need for an informed electorate has never been more compelling. This goal – engaged citizens – is the passion that drives us at the nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project. VPAP connects Virginians with nonpartisan information about politics and government. We accomplish this through free tools designed for the way people consume information today: • VaNews: A daily compilation of newspaper articles about state and local politics read by more than 6,000 opinion leaders around Virginia. • vpap.org: A website that weaves together campaign finance disclosures, election results, lobbyist filings, and other public documents. What sets VPAP apart is our fierce commitment to nonpartisanship. Our goal is to compile information grounded in facts and to present it in a dispassionate way that encourages people to reach their own conclusions. Our board includes Republicans and Democrats who rally around the idea that our government works best when Virginians have access to a trusted set of facts. We believe that sentiment will never go out of style.
