CONFIR M ATION
BECOMING C ATHOLIC
Congratulations! On Saturday, Feb. 7 at the 5:30 p.m. Mass,
Support RCIA Elect and Candidates Next weekend, those
Bishop Frederick F. Campbell confirmed 31 teens and 13 adults
from the Newman Center community. Congratulations to all the
Confirmandi at this most joyous moment on their journeys of
faith.
preparing to become Catholic through the Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults are participating in the Rite of Election with
Bishop Campbell. The Rite of Sending will take place Sunday
at the noon Mass, so our community can send those in RCIA to
Bishop Campbell, assured of our continued prayers and support.
This important rite marks the final step towards reception into
the Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil. This year, we have five adults
seeking baptism, confirmation and Eucharist (the Elect). We
have nine adults who are already baptized and are seeking full
communion with the Catholic Church through confirmation and
Eucharist (Candidates). The RCIA process relies on the prayer of
the entire community. We ask that you please support our Elect
and Candidates with your prayer during this Lenten season. Meet
this year’s class on the display board in the Lane Avenue Lobby.
As part of your Lenten practice of prayer, take one or more of the
prayer slips from the basket by the display. Offer prayers during
Lent, then give Easter cards to the Elect and Candidates for whom
you have been praying. Drop the cards off in the box near the
display board in the Lane Avenue Lobby. We are truly grateful for
your prayers and support!

STEWARDSHIP
•

•
•
Through Dec. 31, 495 individuals and families have either
completed a Newman Promise commitment form or
committed to a continued gift through Buckeye Catholic Direct,
bringing our 2014-15 goal of $650,000 in commitments within
reach.
Gifts totaling $20,000 have been secured for new parking lot
lighting for the safety and security of all. We are obtaining
estimates for installation this spring.
Expenses were lower through Dec. 31 since several budgeted
repairs were deferred to the spring, including sacristy heating/
cooling, moveable wall repairs and exterior painting of the
Paulist House.
Expenses for these deferred maintenance items will diminish
our cash reserves that totaled $371,209 at Dec. 31, but we will
continue to work hard to keep our cash reserves at a prudent
level equivalent to three months’ expenses, approximately
$300,000.
Many thanks to all who support Catholic campus ministry at Ohio
State with your prayers, your gifts and your service.

Buckeye Catholics Care As part of our stewardship, a portion
of the collection from the last Sunday of February will be donated
to Neighborhood Services, Inc.
Founded in 1965 by churches in the University District,
Neighborhood Services Inc. (NSI) has grown to be one of the
largest food pantries and material assistance providers in
Columbus. They serve over 900 people per month; 43 percent
of those served are children under the age of 18. NSI provides
a choice food pantry and a clothing store on a year-round
basis. During the fall, they provide backpacks, school supplies,
and new school clothing for children. They distribute food
baskets during the holidays and warm clothing during the
winter months. They also offer assistance with taxes and with
securing publicly funded benefits such as food stamps, childcare
subsidies, medical benefits and home energy assistance. For
more information, please call NSI at (614) 297-0592 or visit

a group of active Catholics, some of whom are “returnees”
themselves, join with participants to share and explore their faith

facilitate an introduction to centering prayer on Wednesday,
March 4 at noon and 7:30 p.m.
