Curious, he decided to enquire about Computing for Free. It was a decision that would change his life. McIntosh had been working as a labourer but was keen for a change in career. “I wanted a change in lifestyle. I really wanted to do something less physical and more with my brain.” McIntosh, then 35, signed up to complete his National Certificate in Computing at Campus Connect. “I started studying over the next few months and really enjoyed it.” He enjoyed the course so much that he decided to take his skills further, spending the next two years completing a Diploma in ICT. “I have absolutely no regrets. There were challenges but there are always challenges in anything you do. It was a great decision for me.” Since graduating from CPIT, McIntosh has come full circle. He now works as the team leader at the CPIT Madras Street Campus Connect, helping others to complete their National Certificates in Computing. “The best thing about this job is being able to give back,” he says. “People from all different backgrounds and nationalities come through here and it’s great to be able to help them.” 2 Learn Locally Learn at one of our five handy locations around Christchurch. Student Profile Sheena Robinson was 25 years old when she decided to make the brave move to start her National Certificate in Computing. As a single mother of two boys, and with no high school qualifications, she felt understandably apprehensive about attending CPIT’s New Brighton Campus Connect. “I remember being so nervous when I first started – I had no confidence,” she says. “It was a real challenge for me to just come in and start.” She had heard about the course through a friend and decided to sign up. “I didn’t learn that much in high school and I wanted to learn more about computers. Plus, it was something I could work in around my young children. I thought I’d give it a go.” Since then, she’s never looked back. “I am so glad I took the first step and enrolled on the first course,” Sheena says. “I can honestly say that coming here has been one of the best things I have done for myself. My confidence has improved massively and the staff have been fantastic in supporting me.” Sheena completed her National Certificate in Computing Level 2 in 2014 and is now well on the way to completing her Level 3 certificate. “It’s pretty amazing looking back at how far I’ve come over the last year.” “ Coming here has been one of the best things I have done for myself ... the staff have been fantastic in supporting me.” Since then she has encouraged several of her friends to join up to the course to further their computer skills. “I’m spreading the word. I would say to anyone thinking about starting to just do it. You won’t regret it.” Now, Sheena is on the hunt for a job and knows the Campus Connect course has provided her with the expertise and confidence to succeed. “I was also able to study MYOB at New Brighton and now have the skills I need to get back into the workforce,” she says. “I’m starting to apply for positions and it feels great to have these qualifications on my CV. I couldn’t have done it without taking that first step.” 5 Business and Job Hunting Courses Courses by Location Code Date Day Duration Time Fee Mon & Wed 5 weeks 6pm – 8.30pm $251 Mon & Wed 5 weeks 6pm – 8.30pm $251 Mon & Wed 5 weeks 6pm – 8.30pm $251 Bishopdale Accounts Receivable & Payable (MYOB) DBSC303 12 Oct - 23 Nov (No class 26 Oct) City Campus Accounts Receivable & Payable (MYOB) DBSC303 MYOB Payroll DBSC401 18 May - 29 Jun (No class 1 Jun) 12 Oct - 23 Nov (No class 26 Oct) Hornby Accounts Receivable & Payable (MYOB) DBSC303 20 Jul – 26 Aug Mon & Wed 5 weeks 6pm – 8.30pm $251 Advanced Excel DBSC402 10 Aug - 16 Sep Mon & Wed 5 weeks 6pm – 8.30pm $251 Mon & Wed 5 weeks 6pm – 8.30pm $251 Mon & Wed 5 weeks 6pm – 8.30pm $251 Mon & Wed 5 weeks 6pm – 8.30pm $251 Mon & Wed 5 weeks 6pm – 8.30pm $251 New Brighton Accounts Receivable & Payable (MYOB) DBSC303 MYOB Payroll DBSC401 9 Mar - 4 May (No classes 6, 8, 13, 15, 27 Apr) 20 May - 1 Jul (No class 1 Jun) Rangiora Accounts Receivable & Payable (MYOB) DBSC303 MYOB Payroll DBSC401 9 Feb - 18 Mar 23 Mar - 18 May (No classes 6, 8, 13, 15, 27 Apr) Note: More Community courses are to be confirmed.
