E-News for February 27, 2015 Dear Members and Friends: Voluntary Dental and Vision Insurance Savings – Do your employees want dental and vision insurance? Both the employee and the employer can save money if you buy it as the employer rather than have employees buy the insurance as individuals. Here is how this works: Let’s pretend that a person can buy dental and vision insurance for $1,000 per year. That is the price for the insurance, whether you purchase it, or your employee purchases it. However, in order for the employee to get the $1,000 that they need in order to pay for the insurance, they have to actually be paid about $1,300 dollars before taxes. Therefore, the employee has to earn about $1,300, depending upon their tax bracket, to actually “get” $1,000. Additionally, to give them that $1,300, you pay about $130 in employer paid taxes and fees on that income. If you change the way in which the money is paid to the insurance company, there is a big savings on voluntary dental and vision insurance. Insurance costs can be paid pre-tax, which lowers the employees’ taxable income. If you, as the employer, pay the insurance company directly, and deducts the amount from the employees’ paycheck, the total cost is only $1,000 because insurance premiums are not taxed and the employee does not have to pay the government the extra $300 in taxes. You as the employer make out better also. The $1,000 that was deducted from the paycheck, and paid on the employees’ behalf, does not incur approximately $100 in employer paid taxes and fees, which would have to be paid if the money went directly to your employee. Instead, the money is paid directly to the insurance company and is not taxed. This is win/win for both the employee and the employer. The employee saves about $300, and the employer about $100, and the employee gets the exact same insurance from the exact same provider! To learn more about how easy it is to do this type of voluntary program, call our preferred insurance person, Todd Taylor, at Taylor Benefits.
