LISTEN AND FOLLOW
“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” And listen they did.
From that moment on, Peter,
James, and John were ardent followers, forsaking everything to
follow in their Master’s footsteps.
Like the psalmist crying, “O Lord,
I am your servant,” the three disciples committed themselves to lives
of incredible hardship and indescribable joy. After that day on the
mountain, they never again wavered in their chosen vocation.
Though our tests may not be as
severe as Abraham’s and our peak
experiences not as dramatic as the
Transfiguration, we all face the
daily challenges of walking
“before the Lord in the land of the
living.” As we follow our varied
calls to love and serve, let’s be
comforted by Paul’s reminder to
the Romans: “If God is for us, who
can be against us?”

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
March 1, 2015
Second Sunday of Lent
God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning
with the meat divided between God and the people and
eaten by those who sacrificed, but by a holocaust, a total
burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice
consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what
God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son,
Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that
was enough. This story from today’s scriptures foretells
the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant
in the new covenant: the blood of God’s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham’s
obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God’s
promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation
of all people for all time.
PRECIOUS IN GOD’S EYES
We believe that we are never lost, that we are
precious in God’s eyes, and that our death, like that of
Christ, is known and valued by God. Our sacrifices, good
works, and almsgiving are not what saves us, but the love
of God in Christ uniting our efforts with his brings the
reign of God closer to fulfillment. Our response to this
loving kindness of God is thanksgiving and praise—in
other words, “Eucharist.” This is the new covenant of
sacrifice and the banquet that marks God’s fidelity to us
and our response.
IF GOD IS FOR US . . .
If God is for us, asks Paul, who can be against
us? Or who will bring a charge against us if God acquits
us? This is another of many reminders that God, while
not neglecting justice, is not vengeful, but merciful and
loving. God has given us the only Son to be our brother,
guide, and Lord. How can we be afraid of One who is so
generous?
To help us understand that Jesus is truly God, his
disciples are made witnesses to his glory on Mount Tabor. His appearance in glory with Moses and Elijah is a
sign to them of the unity of the old covenant with the
new covenant, which will culminate in Jesus’ sacrifice of
himself in love for us. After this takes place, then the disciples will proclaim his glory to all.
We therefore can have confidence in God’s love
and mercy, and put aside all anxiety. Humans may be
harsh and judgmental, but if they try to project this onto
God for their own purposes, the testimony of Paul and
the witness of Peter, James, and John will contradict
them. As we struggle with our own resistance and distractions, we can be sure that God is our helper and our
guide, not our harsh judge.
OUR LENTEN OBSERVANCES
Abstinence from meat is to be observed by
all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash
Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.
Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age
but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this
may take only one full meal. Two smaller
meals are permitted if necessary to maintain
strength according to one‘s needs, but eating
solid foods between meals is not permitted.
The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and
encouraged for Holy Saturday.
THE ART OF LISTENING
If you want God to listen to you when you
pray, shouldn’t you listen to God when God
speaks to you?

Within the tradition of the Christian
church, there are differing ways of observing
a Lenten fast. For Eastern Catholics and Orthodox, the discipline is close to our understanding of “abstinence.” Certain foods are
eliminated from the diet entirely. The rules are
basically monastic rules, and the customs of a
monastery table are embraced in the home.
This year, “Meatfare Sunday” is February 26,
and it is the last time that meat is admitted to
the diet until Easter. The following Sunday,
known as “Cheesefare Sunday,” takes cheese
and all dairy products from the table. It is also
known as “forgiveness Sunday” because a
true fast is about crowning life with love,
holding back harsh words, and cutting off anger.
The Eastern churches fast even from celebrating the Eucharist from Monday through
Friday. We don’t count Sundays as fast days,
but Eastern Christians fast through the weekends. People are expected to come as close to
the ideal as possible, and the Lenten services
keep reminding them not to take pride in their
fasting, since the devil himself never eats!
What’s left on the menu? Grains, vegetables,
eggs (maybe), and fish. Imagine the joys of
the Easter table after such a fast!

GOD’S WORD TODAY
Today we listen to two stories that take place on
mountaintops. In the first we hear the story of how
Abraham was put to the test. He is referred to as
“our father in faith” precisely because he was willing to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, because the Lord
God had commanded it. When Abraham stands
ready kill Isaac, the Lord God intervenes, prevents
the sacrifice, and blesses Abraham in abundance. In
the second story, the only Son of God is transfigured
on a mountaintop before the eyes of Peter, James,
and John. As the sacred word is proclaimed, let us
ask God to strengthen our own faith and lead us one
day to share in the transfigured glory of Christ.
