ST. MARCELLINE CATHOLIC CHURCH 822 S. Springinsguth Road | Schaumburg, IL 60193 P: (847) 524-4429 F: (847) 524-4597 Website: www.stmarcelline.com THE MEANING OF OUR BAPTISM Lent is the time of year that we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant, the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter’s letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT February 22, 2015 TO THE COMMUNITY OF ST. MARCELLINE This past week many people crowded churches around the Archdiocese to begin the season of Lent and to be marked or smudged with ashes on their foreheads. It always amazes me when I see the throngs of people who crowd the church on this day that I don’t recognize. I wonder what motivates people who rarely may enter a church to come on this day to be marked with ashes. I know many of us can recall the days when we were told or asked, “What are you giving up for Lent?” The experience of “giving up” was to sacrifice during this liturgical season, to prepare to celebrate Easter. But the season of Lent is a season of transformation. Transformation is all about change. You heard, “Repent and believe in the Gospel” as ashes were placed on your forehead. To repent means to change, to transform. What do we need to do in order to change from our old ways and to be transformed during this Lenten season to believe and live the Gospel? I may offer a suggestion here that the transformation that I am speaking of will not happen by “giving up” candy or movies or smoking or going on a diet. The transformation that Lent challenges us to do is a transformation in Christ. The true transformation we long for is freedom from all that holds us back, oppresses us, freedom for all we desire to be and to do, freedom to be in an active, loving relationship with God and others. Ashes are a sign of our deepest desire: transformation. They are a sign of our awareness of reality, that we want to live in the freedom of Jesus Christ, that we choose to be transformed. So take this opportunity this Lent to reflect on what you truly need to do to experience that transformation in Christ. What is holding you back to have that relationship with Christ? What is holding you back to have that transformation of yourself into a follower of Jesus, destined to live and believe the Gospel? During the season of Lent there will be opportunities for people to experience the sacrament of reconciliation. Besides our regular Saturday confessions, on the evening of March 26th, St. Hubert’s and our parish will host a Penance Service. Also across two days (Friday Noon, February 27th to Saturday Noon, February 28th the Church of Chicago will offer opportunities for the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation and for prayers of healing. Sites for this Festival of Forgiveness can be found on the website www.archchicago.org the nearest site in our area for this is in Elk Grove Village at Queen of the Rosary church. May God’s grace and peace be yours. Fr. Hal OUR LENTEN OBSERVANCES Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. All are welcome to spend time in prayer For more information, call Carrie or Bob Alexander 847.882.3250 Fasting may be a priority in your Lenten spring cleaning regimen. Almost every religious tradition recognizes that fasting is a key to heightened spiritual awareness. You know this from your own experience. When you are engaged in a hobby, painting a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply forget to eat. What you are doing so fills you that the intensity of the action is itself nourishing. In fasting from food, or drink, or habitual behaviors, you make room for what is truly important. Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten fast, you will notice traces of fasting in our liturgy. We fast from singing the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedecking the altar, and there may be a noticeable drop in the number of infant baptisms as parents elect to wait until Easter. This hints that fasting is a prelude to feasting, and the vigor of our Easter alleluias is rich fare after a long silence. In the same way, even a small fast—no cream in the coffee, no pepper in the soup, no radio in the car—can not only point to deeper hungers, but help us rejoice more fully in the feast when we break our fast together. —Rev. TRIPS WITH DORIS TO CONTACT HER - 847.985.1048 GOD’S WORD TODAY The Church teaches us that two spiritual strands weave together to form the fabric of the season of Lent. The first, and most familiar, is the repentant character of Lent. Through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we spend these forty days in the desert of repentance, preparing for the celebration of Easter. The second strand is the baptismal character of this holy season. The unbaptized spend Lent in preparation for their baptism and most of us, the already baptized, spend this time preparing to renew the promises—the covenant— established when we were baptized. Today’s readings echo this theme of the covenant between God and us—God’s holy people. Let us enter the Lenten desert of repentance, mindful of the promises made at our baptism when we rejected Satan and professed faith in God. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S.
