Kenya Update
In Awasi, Kenya, the third year of operation is
underway at Amazing Grace Secondary School
As Fr. Jambor clicked through his recent Adult Forum presentation on The Girls of
Amazing Grace in Kenya, the photos and aerial views of the campus told a story of
amazing growth.
The 72 girls of Amazing Grace, their home and their new high school are entirely
supported by All Saints’ Episcopal Church. Fr. Jambor provided an update after visiting
the girls with his wife, Pat, and parishioner Whit Smith.
The orphanage began about 10 years ago with a simple dormitory, a refectory for dining
and an outdoor kitchen. Seen from above in an old aerial photo, chicken coops and
latrines were tiny structures dotting the former grassland. Showers were taken in an
“ablutions block.”
Since then, the size of the campus has expanded with the purchase of adjacent land that
became playing fields. A greenhouse for vegetables has been added, along with a pond in
which tilapia fish are raised to provide both a food source and a revenue stream for the
school. The school has its own well, vital in a drought-prone country, and two water
towers insure that there is enough water for the school and its future growth. Electricity
and wireless internet service are both now available on campus.
Another field, nearby but not adjacent to the school, was recently purchased and will be
planted for crops. Fr. Ogacho, the priest who oversees the school, keeps a watchful eye
for adjacent property that comes up for sale so that it can be purchased and added to the
campus.
The biggest structure on the complex is the impressive two-story secondary
school, which is now in its third year of operation with students in Forms 1,
2 and 3 (9th, 10th and 11th grades). Form 4 (12th grade) will be added next
year, and the Form 4 textbooks are already in place and waiting for the girls.

Help support the Amazing Grace Girls
Right now, there are 67 girls attending the high school – 36 girls
who have grown up at Amazing Grace, and 27 tuition-paying
students from the area.
Below is a summary of the costs involved in supporting
each girl living at Amazing Grace Children’s Home and a
girl attending college. Any and all support is welcome!

High-school academics are quite competitive in Kenya, with a student’s
ability to attend college determined by their scores on the Kenya
Certificate Secondary Education (KCSE) tests. Our Form 3 girls will
take that test in
November of 2016,
and the class results
on the KCSE test
will drive future
admissions to
Amazing Grace
School from paying
students, according
to Fr. Jambor.

For us as a church,
it is time to pour
resources into academics now to help the girls do well on the test.
That effort will include adding teachers and raising their salaries to
attract the best teachers we can. The school will also be marketed
in Kenya with banners and radio and television ads to increase
awareness of the school and its quality of education.
Visitors to the school have been impressed with the beauty of the
facility, its nurturing environment, the Christian values taught,
the discipline of the rules and expectations for students, and the
attention and support of the staff as they tend to the needs of body,
mind and spirit in the students, Fr. Jambor noted.
The goal is to prepare every girl for higher education, and five
of the oldest girls are already in college. Realistically, not every
individual will score high enough on the KCSE test to be able to go
forward to college. Lower-scoring girls will be given the chance to
remain with the school, be tutored and take the test again.
Vocational training will also be available on campus for these girls
at the Barbara Tucker Cummings Guest House, which is now
under construction.

some immediate purchases
on the girls’ behalf.

during school breaks. Thus, the beds for girls attending college
are retained for them during college, and we as a church seek to
continue to support these girls’ college educations, much as we
as parents do for our own children.

The Instructed Eucharist
& Potluck Dinner
Eight new Stephen Ministers commissioned
After 50 hours of intensive training, eight new Stephen Ministers were commissioned at
the 11:15 a.m. service on Feb. 8. The new Stephen Minister class includes Ed Ferree,
Mark Howard. Robert Davie, Sallie Trotter, Ann Spence, Joanie Blanton,
Kathleen Farrelly and Nancy Searway. Pictured with them are Mthr. Jordan
Ware, Stephen Leaders Whit Smith and Mary Shannon and pastoral advisor Fr.
Johnson Shannon.
Stephen Ministry training equips and empowers lay caregivers,
called Stephen Ministers, to provide high-quality, confidential,
Christ-centered care to hurting people. They are not counselors;
they are trained Christian caregivers whose role is to listen and care.
Our newly commissioned Stephen Ministers are now available to be
assigned one-on-one to others in our parish community who could
benefit from a caring and listening ear. A Stephen Minister generally
spends an hour per week with their care receiver, and engages in
twice-monthly supervision to ensure that they are providing the
best-quality Christian care.

On Maundy Thursday, a foot-washing clinic for the homeless
“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you

This Lenten season, a new event will offer us another way to serve our fellow man,
while washing feet as Christ exhorted his disciples to do on the night of the Last
Supper. We are seeking about 25 church volunteers to join with volunteers and
students from All Saints’ Episcopal School to help with our Maundy Thursday
Foot Clinic for the homeless. The event will take place April 2 from 10:00 a.m.
to 3:00 p.m. in Unity Park in Fort Worth, not far from the Presbyterian Night
Shelter. Volunteers do not need to be there the entire time, and are needed in
multiple roles, including set-up and take-down. Medical professionals will be on
hand to supervise the foot clinic. We will offer the Eucharist, serve lunch, wash
feet, and distribute manna bags and shoes. For more information, please contact
