Are you a legal assistant?
A bank officer? A risk

Does your title reflect
your paralegal work assignments? The preferred title for paralegals
by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations and the Illinois
Paralegal Association has
been “paralegal” rather
than “legal assistant” for
some time.
The IPA’s definition is:
A paralegal is a person
qualified through education, training, or work experience to perform substantive legal work that
requires knowledge of legal concepts and that is
customarily, but not exclusively, performed by
an attorney. The person
is retained/employed by
an attorney, law office,
government agency, or
other entity under the supervisory authority of an
attorney; or is authorized
by governmental administrative agency or statutory or court authority to
perform this work.
The National Federation of Paralegal Associations’ definition is: A
paralegal/legal assistant
is a person qualified
through education, training or work experience to
perform substantive legal
work that requires
knowledge of legal concepts and is customarily,
but not exclusively, performed by a lawyer. This
person may be retained
or employed by a lawyer,
law office, governmental

For many years the
terms paralegal and legal
assistant were used interchangeably. The public
and even members of the
legal field were confused
about what these paralegals/legal assistants were.
All of the paralegal associations worked for many
years to inform the public and the legal field regarding what paralegals/legal assistants were
and could do. In recent
years many law firms and
other entities have begun
identifying the law clerks,
legal secretaries or other
support staff as legal assistants. Again the public
is confused about who
paralegals are.
While this topic may
seem nitpicking it is not.
With so many different
titles floating around it is
the wish to help the consumer as well as the legal
profession identify the
paralegals with accuracy.
Now this does not mean
that there is an attempt
to alienate the paralegals
who are referred to as legal assistants.
