The Sound of Joy
“Shhh!” said the Dali Lama when he heard a baby babbling from one of the back pews
of the congregation filled with people. The crowd was silenced. “That,” he said, “is the
sound of joy!”
At St. James’s we are blessed to be surrounded by the joyful babbling of babies in our
pews, the skipping of toddlers as they rush forward to celebrate communion, and the
stampede of children as they make their way to and from Children’s Chapel each
Sunday morning. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” The children are
here and the sound of joy is in our midst if we listen. Our children have so much to
share with us and we have so much to share with them.
Do you wonder how you can be part of that joy? If you have an hour a week, an hour
a month, or a few hours a year you are invited to be part of the children’s ministries.
Each year dozens of children are baptized at St. James’s. You can share in the joy of
their baptisms by crafting the banners they receive as a memento of their special day.
Each Sunday our nursery is an active place filled with the cries and giggles of babies
and toddlers. You can be a part of that joyful chaos for an hour by holding a baby or
playing with our little ones.
Each Sunday during the program year our Sunday school classrooms offer the
opportunity to learn with children from age two through fifth grade. You can
participate in our children’s Christian formation by reading with the pre-schoolers, by
wondering with the Godly Play classes, or by leading workshops with the elementary
children. The connection you will build with the children can bring you joy.
Each year our children are given the opportunity to become “doers” by offering
donations in Children’s Chapel, donating coins in Advent and Lent mite boxes,
creating tablecloths and prayer cards for CARITAS, and collecting items at Vacation
Bible School to share with those in need. By supporting our children’s acts of service
you can spread joy beyond the walls of St. James’s.
I invite you to be part of the joy that is all around us.
Almighty God, heavenly father, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children:
Give us calm strength and patient wisdom as we bring them up, that we may teach
them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of our Savior
Jesus Christ. Amen.

SUNDAY SCHOOL COMMUNION CLASS
Today, 3-5 year olds will have a communion class with the rector during Sunday
School. Parents, please take your children to their Sunday School classrooms and
their teachers will bring them as a group to the sanctuary. Parents are invited to
attend the lesson also.

Lenten reflection kits for families are available on the 2nd floor of the Michaux
House. “Lent in a Bag” items are designed to assist your family in observing Lent at
home. The paper bags include small prompts as well as ideas on ways to use them for
reflection during Lent. Pick one up today!
ORDER MATERIALS FOR LENTEN STUDY
On Wednesdays at the 10:00 a.m. Living Faith Bible Study and again in Christian
Journey at 7:00 p.m., we are walking with Jesus during Lent. Using The Last Week
by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan, we follow the Gospel of Mark’s details
of Holy Week from Palm Sunday to Easter. Undoubtedly, as we follow the events of
that fateful week we will be challenged by new ideas and new perspectives, and our

WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT ST. JAMES’S
Join us Wednesday nights for dinner and Christian study or choir rehearsal. During
Lent a Rite II Holy Eucharist is celebrated at 5:30 p.m. in the chapel followed by
supper at 6:00 p.m. This week Pilgrim’s Path, Christian Journey, the Grief and Loss
Support Group, Mind Body and Stress Relief, and West Gallery Choir rehearsal
begin at 7:00 p.m.
EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY - EFM - GROUP IS FORMING
Are you seeking to deepen and grow your faith? Education for Ministry – EfM – is
designed to help us understand our lives and shape our actions as we deepen our
Christian faith. An EfM group is forming and will begin meeting on Wednesday
evenings in September. Co-mentors will be Jane Dowrick and Rosie Messer,
members of St. James’s and EfM alums. The EfM program is designed by the
University of the South and offers four years of study and reflection in a small group
setting. Members need only commit to one year at a time. There is a tuition fee and
scholarships are available. From an EfM graduate: “EfM has helped me be more
aware of the God-full moments in my daily walk – at work, at home, at play – and to
discover how I can minister right where I am right now, and to explore possible new
ministry.” An EfM information session, with pizza and soft drinks, will be offered on
Wednesday, April 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Babysitting is not provided for this

UTO SPRING INGATHERING TODAY
Today is the Spring Ingathering for the United Thank Offering. UTO, founded by
the women of the Episcopal Church in 1889, encourages us to give thanks for our
blessings through daily prayer and offering, and by doing so, our offerings fund
human need projects here and abroad. During Lent, let us be mindful of the love God
has shown to each of us and give a thanksgiving that will make a difference in the lives
of others. Your offering may be placed in the UTO offering envelope you will find in
your pew next Sunday.
EASTER LILIES
Memorial lilies to decorate the altar and sanctuary for Easter may be ordered by
contacting Gina Young (355-1779 ext. 315 or [email protected]). Please give the
name or names as you would like them to appear in the Sunday Chimes and send a
check for $15 (payable to St. James’s with “Easter Lily” written on the memo line) no
later than Friday, March 27. The lilies will be delivered to the sick and home-bound
after Easter services.
HONDURAS – SUMMER 2015
Our longest running mission continues to flourish in this country with one of the
poorest economies in Central America. We will run a Bible school/summer camp
experience at Our Little Roses Home for Girls in San Pedro Sula July 6-13 this
summer. Teens with parents going on this trip may also sign up and registration is due
by March 15. Trip contact Julie Wade ([email protected]) can give you more
details.
YOUTH SUMMER MISSION TRIPS
The Junior High Youth Mini-Mission Trip to Exmore, VA, will be July 10-12 for
current 5th-7th graders. The Senior High Youth Mission Trip to Blackfeet Nation
Reservation, Montana will be July 11-18 for current 8th-12th graders. Scholarships are
available and registration deadline is TODAY. Interested youth should contact Mary

NEW YORK MISSION TRIP: APRIL 6-11
The mission trip to Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, to assist with Hurricane Sandy
recovery has room for two more people. Could this be the spring break activity you

EARLY RISERS LENTEN BIBLE STUDY
A lectionary-based Bible study is convening on Monday mornings in Lent in the
Fagan Parlor in the Michaux House. The group meets at 7:00 a.m. Bring your Bible
and your own coffee – with a lid please!

9:00 A.M. SERVICE
Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake is by the 16th century English composer Richard
Farrant (1525-1580). Farrant was organist at the Chapel Royal and at Windsor
Chapel during the reign of Mary Tudor.
For the bread which you have broken, is an anthem for children’s choir that I
composed in 1995. The text is by Louis F. Benson (1855-1930). After seven years
practicing law, Benson went to seminary and was ordained a Presbyterian minister
in 1886. He later wrote two important books on hymnody, The English Hymn (1915)
and Hymnody of the Christian Church (1927), which were published here in Richmond.
The 1st Song of Isaiah is a plainsong setting of Canticle 9 in The Book of Common
Prayer. The text is based on Isaiah 12:2-6. Plainsong (Gregorian chant) is the oldest
music of the church, with some chants tracing back to the music of the synagogue.
11:15 A.M. SERVICE
Kyrie and Agnus Dei are from Mass for Three Voices by the Elizabethan composer
William Byrd (1543-1623). Byrd was appointed organist at the Chapel Royal by
Queen Elizabeth in 1572, where he served alongside his mentor Thomas Tallis. In
1575 the two were granted a patent for the exclusive right to print and sell music in
England. Byrd was undoubtedly the finest and most popular composer of his day.
In spite of the fact that Catholics were undergoing severe persecution in England,
Byrd remained a Catholic and composed Latin masses and motets which were
identified with Roman Catholicism.
If ye love me is by the well-known Tudor composer Thomas Tallis (1505-1585).
Tallis, often called the “father of English church music,” served as chorister,
composer, and organist at the Chapel Royal under Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary
Tudor and, finally, for more than half the reign of Elizabeth I.
HYMN OF THE MONTH
The Hymn of the Month for March is “Creator of the earth and skies”
(Hymnal 148). The text is by David Hughes (1911-67), who was a teacher at the
Leys School Cambridge and later headmaster at Rydal School, founded by
Methodists in North Wales. He began writing hymns late in life. This is the only
one of his texts included in Hymnal 1982. The tune Uffingham is by the 18th century
English composer Jeremiah Clarke (1669-1707). Clarke became organist at St.
Paul’s Cathedral in 1695 and in 1704 became organist at the Chapel Royal. He is
most noted as the composer of the well-known Trumpet Voluntary.
EVENSONG TONIGHT AT 5:00 P.M.
Please come to Evensong tonight and bring a friend. The Youth Choir will
sing music by Sumsion, Sufjan Stevens and John Rutter. This service is a peaceful
way to close the day, or to prepare for the week ahead, and a wonderful way to
introduce your friends to St. James’s.
DYLAN MASS: MARCH 8, 10:00 A.M. JOINT SERVICE
The West Gallery Choir and Guitar Ensemble, with guest artists Jonathan
Vassar and Corey Axt, will lead worship with the songs of Bob Dylan at the 10:00
a.m. service next Sunday, March 8. In the poem, “Last Thoughts on Woody
Guthrie,” Bob Dylan wrote,
You need something to open up a new door
To show you something you seen before
But overlooked a hundred times or more
You need something to open your eyes
You need something to make it known
Join us as we worship with a Dylan vocabulary, both musically and lyrically,
for the age old truths for which we hunger.
