I took off! I flew a loop around Key West! I did barrel rolls! I landed safely on the runway! I did this all while in a simulator. I know it is virtual reality, but it was still fun. I also have to give credit to Jim, the site manager, because he basically guided me through the whole process and controlled the throttle so I maintained the speed needed. I now have a new appreciation for pilots because there is a lot going on while you’re flying. I also found out how important the instruments were while flying. Driving a car is two dimensional. I just need to worry about speed and making sure I don’t hit a tourist jaywalking across Duval. However, flying a jet is three dimensional. I have to be concerned with an altitude, speed, whether or not I am level, diving or ascending and much more. There was one instrument I learned to trust quickly - the gyroscope. That had to be the single most important instrument to my success in the simulator. My eyes deceived me on different occasions when I thought I was level because I was looking out into the PCS continued from page 1 can call on the day of the move. • Secure all valuables or important documents - credit cards, cash, passports, etc. -in a car or separate area. • If a problem arises on the day before or on the day of the move, call a quality control inspector for assistance at (305) 293-2973. horizon. Jim would gently remind me I was descending and to keep an eye on that gyroscope. I learned to check that instrument frequently as I flew over Key West; otherwise, I would have found myself crashing into the ocean. Ethan Everts I would have noticed if I was nose diving into the ocean, but it was the slow descent that tricked me. In our lives, it is the small things that slowly pull us down. We compromise our integrity here. We say something there. Then weeks, months or years later, we find ourselves fully immersed in the ocean of sin that we were trying to fly above. What we need is a gyroscope for our spiritual reality. I trusted my eyes and my gut to keep me level, but they were not enough. Our physical reality and our emo- tional realities may seem right, but they could be misguiding. We must check our spiritual instruments to ensure we are being guided right. There are many different instruments to keep us on track. The Bible keeps us on track to ensure our beliefs and teachings are in line. Prayer helps keep our emotions in check especially when we are in fear or worry. Going to church and seeking counsel among others was like Jim making sure I checked my instruments or giving me information I would have never known about if I just tried to fly in the simulator on my own. These are just a few instruments needed, but the important point is that we check them frequently. Just as the designers of these jets didn’t add instruments in the cockpit for show, God didn’t give us His instruments to ignore them or to misguide us. If we do not learn to use those instruments, then our spiritual reality may become a virtual reality in our lives; although it may seem real, in the end you are just simulating your faith. Come join us for real worship at the Truman Chapel on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Remember, your chaplains are instruments to help guide you as well. The 71-year difference took a back seat when the two fighter pilots met Feb. 20 for a tour of Fighter Squadron Composite (VFC) 111. Ramey, from Greenville, South Carolina, was in Key West visiting his daughter when he was surprised with a tour of Naval Air Station Key West’s Boca Chica Field. Answer: They are diets - like the Atkins and Zone diets - that have been widely promoted in recent years as effective weight loss plans. The basic premise behind these diets is that by avoiding carbohydrates and increasing protein, the body will promote fat burning that leads to weight loss. Lic. #MM30205 401970 Question: Are there any adverse reactions to lowering carbohydrate intake? Answer: The myth that carbohydrates are more fattening than protein has been around for decades. When the body is deprived of carbohydrates, energy or glycogen stores become depleted and the body begins to break down protein in muscle and nerve tissue, which is needed to fuel the brain and nervous system. This loss of lean muscle mass can actually lower the body’s metabolism, causing it to burn may cause inflammation of the joints less calories after the diet than before. in those predisposed to gout. Question: Do high-protein, lowcarbohydrate diets provide the body with recommended daily nutrients? Answer: They tend to avoid many fruits, vegetables and grains; and are typically deficient in many nutrients - such as folate, vitamin C, fiber and phytochemicals. These nutrients have been shown to promote health and prevent various types of cancers. Question: Are there any risks associated with high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets? Answer: Food items associated with these of diets - such as eggs, bacon, butter, cheese and red meat - are high in animal fat, which can increase the risk of heart disease, kidney problems, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. Top 10 tips to save $ in tight budgets FROM NAS KEY WEST PUBLIC AFFAIRS A rticles abound on how to save money and establish a budget at the www.militarysaves.org website. For those on a tight budget, here are 10 ways to build small savings into big savings over time: Tip 1: Keep a careful record of all expenditures for a month. You may be surprised to learn how much you are spending on such things as a daily latte or restaurant meals. Tip 2: For necessary purchases food, transportation and insurance - comparison shop. The commissary and exchange offer year-round savings. Use those savings opportunities just as you use other military benefits. Tip 3: Restrain spending for birthdays and holidays, especially Christmas. A few well-chosen gifts are likely to be more appreciated than a more costly pile of gifts bought in a shopping mall foray. Tip 4: Interest rates on credit card debts and other retail credit lines can easily run 25 percent. Save hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dollars a year by pay- ing off these high-cost debts. If you are located at a military installation you can get assistance at the Fleet and Family Support Center for free. Personal financial managers and counselors are there to help and can be assets in designing a debt repayment plan. Tip 5: Build an emergency fund to avoid having to take loans to pay for unexpected purchases. Tip 6: Set up an automatic transfer each pay period or month from checking to savings accounts or through an allotment. Even $10 or$15 a month helps. After all, that’s $120 or $180 a year. Tip 7: Put all loose change in the savings account. For many people, that could add up to well over $100 a year. Tip 8: Low- and moderate-income workers may qualify for an Earned Income Tax Credit that can save $1,000, and often, more than $2,000. The EITC Assistant tool provided by the IRS can help determine if you are qualified to claim the credit. Tip 9: Participate in a local investment development account program. In return for attending financial education sessions and agreeing to save for a home, education, or business, you typically receive $2 for every $1 you save through an IDA program. So, $25 that you save each month ends up as $900 at the end of a year. Tip 10: Participate in the Thrift Savings Plan or Save at Work. Although designed to build up until retirement, the money can be withdrawn, or borrowed on, to cope with serious emergencies. The luncheons took place at the Key West Area Chief Petty Officer Association Mess and NBHCKW faculty lounge, respectively. This year’s theme for African-American History Month is “A Century of Black Life, History and Culture.” The Multi-Cultural Heritage Committee prepared meatloaf, chicken wings, cornbread, green beans, collard greens, mashed potatoes, yams, sweet potato pie, peach cobbler and fruit. Display boards featuring historic icons were also presented for Sailors and civilian employees around the CPOA mess. “Before, branches were limited in regards to race, but following the civil rights movement we are now able to have people serving in several positions and in different ranks,” said MCHC President MM1 Juliana Gomez, as she described the importance of the observance. “As time has progressed they’ve removed limitations on how we serve and what we can do,” Gomez added. The Social Committee invited Key West Commissioner Clayton Lopez to judge a poster contest among NBHC Key West divisions and join them for their luncheon. Posters depicted African-Americans throughout history that have steered the course toward the rights and freedoms in American society today. Before the luncheon, Lopez spoke to Sailors and faculty members of the clinic. “Key West has a history richly embedded in Caribbean history, black history, American history, and world history,” said Lopez. “Truth be told, they are all the same, aren’t they? Doesn’t one contribute to the other?” Lopez asked attendees to consider what impact they would have in the history of future generations. He concluded his speech saying, “Everyday, we have an opportunity to do something that has the potential to immortalize us! Do it! Thank you! God bless you! God bless this wonderful little city, God bless the state of Florida and God bless the United States of America!” African-American/Black History Month began in 1926 as a week-long observance in February that included birthdays of two key figures in African-American history, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In 1976, the week became a month-long celebration that continues to be celebrated in February. U.S. Air Force photo 20th Fighter Group P-51D Mustangs parked at Shaw Field in November 1946. Pilot continued from page 3 until January 1945, the 20th took part in the Battle of the Bulge. After visiting VFC-111, and meeting Commanding Officer Cmdr. Walter Peasley, Ramey took a tour of Tactical Combat Training System, where he learned that technology has replaced the chalk boards that were used to brief and review flight operations. At the invitation of the NAS Key West Chief Petty Officers, Ramey spoke about his experiences as a combat fighter pilot. When asked what it was like flying the P-51D Mustang, Ramey said, “It was like holding the hand of a beautiful woman.” He then spoke of his WWII flying experiences. “I was the smartest dumbbutt to come out of flight training,” he said of his initial bravado. “But I learned a lot.” “You learn a lot in war,” he added, quietly. “You have to, or you don’t survive.” Ramey still carries shrapnel in one leg, a memento from when his plane was hit. He landed the damaged aircraft even though the hydraulics had failed. In October 1945, the 20th Fighter Group returned to Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. The 20th Air Group is still assigned there, as is Ramey’s squadron - the 79th. He said he had the opportunity to stay in the Army Air Corps as a first lieutenant, instead of his wartime rank of colonel. Instead, Ramey chose to go home. “At the end I had had enough.” February 27, 2015 • Southernmost Flyer • 11 KEYSWIDE CLASSIFIEDS ARE NOW WORLDWIDE keysnews.com/classifieds The Keys Only Online Daily Newspaper Garage Sale Map ...................................................................Noon Thursday 000 ANNOUNCEMENTS 300 MERCHANDISE 400 RENTALS 010....................................... .......Public Notices 040....................................... ..............Personals 050.................................................Lost & Found 060............ .......................................Pets Found 305................... ............ .............................Pets 310.......................,............. ........Sporting Goods 315........................................................Bicycles 320...........................................Household Goods 321......................................................
