THINK FIRST!
DON’T DRINK & DRIVE
n honor of Martin Luther King
Jr., I think about the struggle that humanity has fought
against for thousands of years.
Racism is just one form of discrimination that has caused more
pain, loss and division to this
world. Ironically, discrimination is
a darkness that can consume any
person that allows it to take root in
his/her heart.
King stated, “Darkness cannot
drive out darkness; only light can
do that. Hate cannot drive out
hate; only love can do that.”
That quote is one that should
drive the church. We are to be the
salt and light to this world.
Jesus said the way to show God
to this world is through our unity
as his disciples. This unity can only
be accomplished through love.
In the eyes of Christ, there is no
race, gender, or economics. We are
all created in the image of God.
Christ did not just die for the select
few, but the entire world.
The church is to be a group of
people that loves and forgives each
other unconditionally. It is to be
a fellowship of equals that sees

bers, military retirees and their

health care coverage on their 2014
taxes, said Mark Ellis, a Defense
Health Agency health care operations program analyst.
For this year only, taxpayers will
“self-attest” on their 2014 tax forms
diversity as strength.
Sadly, church history has proven
this was not always the case.
Discrimination is a darkness
that has to be fought continually
on a personal and corporate level.
Some of the greatest atrocities in
human history involving discrimination were underCHAPLAIN'S taken by those who
profess
Christ.

hate. Governments
across this world
are facing these challenges each
year.
However, this country has come
a long way since the days of King.
Our leadership has become more
diversified. Our military is more
diversified. Our schools are more
diversified.
That said, we still have a long
way to go.
One starting point for change
should be the church. As men-
tioned above, we are to show this
change to the world. Our love and
unity should be an example to this
world. The church is the representation of God, and God is love and
light.
Our identity should also be
found in Christ. When we do this,
discrimination cannot take root
in our fellowship. We are brothers
and sisters in Christ. No longer are
we identified by our status but by
our gifts we bring to the church
body.
Our country is great because of
freedom. That freedom has also
made us one of the greatest diversified nations in this world. This
diversity has made us powerful.
However, discrimination undermines it all because it causes
oppression. Oppression is the
antithesis of freedom.
So we have a choice to make as
individuals, communities, and a
country. If freedom is to ring, then
discrimination has to be silenced.

to each month in which they had
health care coverage, he said.
The act mandates that health
care must meet minimum essential coverage, and TRICARE coverage meets that criteria for the
majority of service members and
their families, Ellis said.
TRICARE Prime, TRICARE
Standard, TRICARE for Life,
TRICARE Overseas, TRICARE
Remote and the Uniformed Services
Family Health Plan meet the minimum essential coverage, he added.
When purchased, premium-based
plan such as TRICARE Reserve
Select or TRICARE Retired Reserve
also fulfill the act’s requirements.
Uniformed service members who have questions about
TRICARE, the act and the individual coverage mandate can visit the
TRICARE website to download a
fact sheet on TRICARE and the act,
with TRICARE plans compared to
minimum essential coverage, Ellis
said.

Grieco, commanding officer of the
aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71),
and Capt. Benjamin Hewlett, deputy commander of
Carrier Air Wing 1, recorded the 200,000th arrested
landing aboard TR.
“It was an amazing
opportunity to highlight
an accomplishment of the
USS Theodore Roosevelt ...
making history during her
28th year in the fleet,” said
Grieco.
Logging the 200,000th
trap on Jan. 15 was the
result of decades of dedication and professionalism
from the team aboard TR,
ranging from aviators to
the Sailors operating the
ship’s arresting gears.
“It is amazing to be a
part of the 200,000th trap
because with the job that
we do, it takes a lot of effort
for five traps,” said ABE2
Chad Gaston, arresting
gear assistant leading petty
officer. “So, 200,000 is a lot
for one ship, and I can’t
even imagine how many
Sailors and man hours it
took to reach this milestone.”
It’s not just the pilot
landing the aircraft. Several
different Sailors play a part
in coordinating the landing of an aircraft aboard an

Sailors put auto skills to use
STORY AND PHOTOS BY MC1 (SW/AW) BRIAN MORALES
Southernmost Flyer
B
The Auto Skills Center, Bldg. A- 730, Boca Chica Field, is open to active duty, retirees and DOD
employees.
eing in Key West, you have limited options as to your automobile diagnostics and mechanical solutions, said DC2 Frank Gomez, a Morale,
Welfare and Recreation Auto Skills Center mechanic aboard Boca
Chica Field.
”When I took the orders to Key West, I didn’t really know that I was going to
be working at an auto hobby shop,” said Gomez, who is working out-of-rate,
but in a field he’s interested in, during his tour at Naval Air Station Key West.
With the limited selection of vehicle services around the Lower Keys, the
on-base Auto Skills Center assists patrons with oil changes, tire changes, tire
mount and balance, starter changes and even engine swaps.
“Our shop operates mainly as a self-help center. Patrons can come in and
do their own work if they know how to and we rent out stalls and tools,” said
Arthur Davis, Auto Skills Center manager.
According to Davis, labor costs in town can range between $80 - $140 an
hour; using the Auto Skills Center can save patrons on those costs.
The center’s mechanics assist an average of 35 customers per week in a shop
that has four entry-level maintenance bays for quick services. The facility also
has two advanced project bays for advanced services, such as an engine swap.
Patrons can bring their vehicles to Bldg. A-730, Boca Chica Field, 10 a.m. - 6
p.m. Tuesday - Friday and 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday.
“A lot of people say they love their job in the Navy but I very well might be
the luckiest guy in the Navy right now,” Gomez added.
For more information, call the Auto Skills Center (305) 293-2615.

NAS Key West Sailors celebrate MLK
FROM NAS KEY WEST PUBLIC AFFAIRS
N
aval Air Station Key West’s Multicultural Heritage Committee hosted an observation Wednesday
honoring Martin Luther King Jr. in Bldg. A-515, Boca Chica Field.
Multicultural Heritage Committee President MM1 Juliana Gomez welcomed guests and introduced Chaplain Lt. Ethan Everts for the delivery of the invocation, followed by MA1 Justin Sosa reading the
poem “Standing Tall.”
The Rev. Gwendolyn Magby and Elder Hayward Magby returned as guests for the ceremony.
Gwendolyn Magby is the co-founder of the current Interfaith Ministerial Alliance and chairperson of the
Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship prayer breakfast. Hayward Magby is a retired U. S. Air Force staff sergeant.
“If we don’t practice what we’ve been given and if we do not stand for what we believe, we will lose it,” said
Hayward Magby referring to King’s ‘Dream’ for the country. “This country is very young. There’s no other
country like it. And you, sitting here, are the backbone of this country.”
AC1 Vleet Roberts and AC3 Katrisha Baham sang “We Shall Overcome” after Hayward Magby’s remarks.
The observance of King’s birthday was established in 1983 and falls on third Monday in January.
Remembrance ceremonies focus on King’s legacy of change through the principles of non-violence.
The constant theme for King’s observance is “Remember. Celebrate. Act. A Day On, Not a Day Off.”
The theme is a reminder that King’s holiday is a day for community and humanitarian service, activities
and programs.

CNP
continued from page 1
“There are exceptions,”
Moran noted, “but on average, the opportunity to
advance is high.” Seabee
ratings, for example, have
suffered from cuts over the
past several years, but that is
“leveling out” now.
Moran noted that, unlike
other branches of the armed
forces, the Navy is growing,
looking to add approximately 5,000 Sailors over the next
five years. Growth in cyber
and unmanned systems
as well as ship manning is
partly responsible for that
growth.
Not as healthy is the
Navy’s recent deployment
cycle, which had ships
deployed for up to nine or
10 months at a time and in
some cases on back-to-back
rotations. One Sailor asked
the CNP how and when the
Navy was going to get back a
more “normal” operational
tempo.
Moran said that the current 10-month deployment
of the USS Carl Vinson is
the last longer-than-normal
deployment the Navy will
schedule.
“The Chief of Naval
Operations is committed to
seven-month deployments,
and that’s what we’re going
to do,” he said. By 2016,
most ships will be back to
seven-month deployment
schedules.
Moran and Beldo also
addressed Navy testing
requirements, options of
Sailors who are undesignated, Reserve and active duty
integration and diversity
training in the Fleet.
“Our focus, when it comes
to diversity, all diversity,
should be on our core values,” Moran said when asked
about diversity training.
“Doing the right thing for
the right reasons; you have
to believe it. If you don’t
believe it, please, go find
another job.”

[foreign object debris] so
aircraft can land safely,”
said ABHN Gabriel Uriva,
an aft-spotter in Pri-Fly. “It
feels great to see how the
TR team came together to
get this done.”
The Sailors who operate TR’s arresting gears
plan on celebrating the
momentous event with
a cake cutting ceremony,
and handing out pieces of
the arresting wire as souvenirs.
“We stripped the arresting wire that was used
in the 200,000th landing
and we are going to cut it
up and give it back to the
troops to show them our
appreciation,” said Gaston.
“This is a benchmark
for the ship,” said Grieco.
“People see our aircraft
carrier and see an amazing
piece of equipment that
can support our nation
but don’t realize that she
is only half way through
her lifespan and has landed an incredible 200,000
airplanes. So in the years
to come, with TR moving
forward, she will likely
land upwards of 400,000
airplanes before she is
decommissioned.”
