Key West’s Multicultural Heritage
Committee hosts an observation Wednesday honoring Martin Luther King Jr.
from 11 a.m. - noon in Bldg.
A-515, Boca Chica Field.
The observance of Martin
Luther King Jr.’s birthday
was established in 1983 and
falls on the third Monday
in January. Remembrance
ceremonies focus on King’s
legacy of change through the
principles of non-violence.
The constant theme for
Martin Luther King Jr.’s
observance is “Remember.
Celebrate. Act. A Day On,
Not a Day Off.” The theme is
a reminder that King’s holiday is a day for community
and humanitarian service,
activities and programs.

Kauffman supports JIATF South during final deployment
FROM NAS KEY WEST

T
he
guided-missile
frigate USS Kauffman (FFG 59)
pulled into the Truman Mole
Pier Wednesday, ready to support
Operation Martillo as part of its final
deployment. This deployment also
marks the last scheduled deployment
by any Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate. In September, the ship will be
the last operationally active frigate to
decommission.
Kauffman is assigned to the U.S.
4th Fleet area of responsibility, supporting the U.S. Southern Command
and the Joint Interagency Task Force
South’s Operation Martillo. The operation’s goal is to suppress the illegal
drug trade in the Caribbean, Central
America and South America by conducting drug trafficking interdiction
operations.
Cmdr.
Michael
Concannon,
Kauffman commanding officer, will
lead the crew through their final
deployment. He recognizes the historical significance and impact this
deployment will have on many Sailors
past and present, who have served in
frigates during their Navy careers.
“I am honored and humbled to have
this opportunity to lead such a capa-
ble and proud group of Sailors on this,
the final deployment of an FFG-7 class
ship, and to be the last in a great line
of frigate commanding officers,” said
Concannon.
“What a fitting mission for this great
ship and crew to leave as its final
legacy, keeping drugs off the streets
of America by stopping them at the
source. We are up for the task. We are
ready.”
The ship was commissioned Feb.
28, 1987, and is named after famed
U.S. Navy admirals Vice Adm. James
L. Kauffman and his son, Rear Adm.

Carrying
the torch
T
When we wear this uniform, we
are not just wearing a piece of fabric. We are carrying the history of
the world’s greatest military. We
carry a torch that was passed from
the Revolutionary War to the wars
we fight today and in the future.
This thought challenges my faith
as well. The church
CHAPLAIN'S today is carrying
the torch and shapCORNER
ing church history.
Just as I wear a
uniform that represents something
bigger than me,
when I wear the
NAS Key West
name
of Christ, I
Command Chaplain
represent
so much
Lt.
more than myself.
Ethan Everts
I represent a history of faith that
the book of Hebrews records all the
way to Abel. The writer in Hebrews
11 records a list of faithful men
and women who carried this torch.
And today we can look back to the
Apostles and great church theologians who carried this torch.
And for some, we can look back
generations in our own families
and see what torch we continue to
carry. For me, I carry a torch I never
thought I would. My grandfather
was a retired Navy chaplain, and
now I carry that same torch.
We all carry something greater
than we realize. That torch in your
hand carries a past far beyond your
own. On the other hand, it is also
a torch you will pass. As you are
shaping your faith, you will shape
the faith of others around you,
directly or indirectly.
I think about that with my children. I ask myself what faith I am
showing them. The reality is their
torch is lit. It will light their way
down paths I never have gone.
However, I hope that my faith can
be a place of knowledge that they
can look to find help. I hope that
how I lived my life can be an example of how to live through dark
times. I hope they do not have to
live through the same hurts I did.
The older generation has given
us something great to carry. We
should be grateful for what we can
learn from their dark days. What
you do with it is up to you. I urge
you to honor them and continue
deeper into your faith. Just remember, you will pass or already are
passing this torch on to family,
friends, coworkers and other people you interact with each day.
One of the greatest traditions
we have is the gathering of ourselves together. So, come and join
us on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in
the Truman Chapel. If you are
struggling with that torch, give the
chaplain a call at (305) 293-2318,
Naval Air Station Key West, or (305)
292-8788, Coast Guard. God bless!
Jan. 20
his week I was able to participate in a flag-raising
ceremony at Venture Out.
This was the 15th year for this
event. Each January when most of
the retirement community is back
in the Keys, they take the time in
the morning to honor the veterans
in their community.
As part of the ceremony, they
have all the veterans in formation
and marching to the flagpole. On
the sidelines, residents cheer these
vets and the active military members who are there to participate
in the ceremony. It is a like a small
parade.
This community still includes
veterans from World War II. It
is truly a humbling event that
reminds me of the sacrifice those
veterans made so we could have
our freedom today.
Nonetheless, I can also see an
expectation and appreciation in
the eyes of this community as well.
There is no greater honor to the
previous generation than to continue in the excellence they gave
us. Though they may never don
the uniform again, they look to us
as the next generation to carry on
with the same values.

Military OneSource offers Sailors free tax help
FROM DEFENSE MEDIA ACTIVITY
W
ith the new year comes the
annual dread of tax-filing
season and the confusion
and stress that can go along with it,
especially for military families whose
tax returns can be further complicated by frequent relocations, involvement of rental properties and other
aspects of military life.
To ease the burden, the Defense
Department,
through
Military
OneSource, is teaming again this year
with H&R Block to offer no-cost tax
preparation to the military community with a promise of guaranteed
accuracy, a service that otherwise
could cost military families hundreds
of dollars or more.
Military OneSource offers nocost tax consultation and no-cost
tax preparation and filing to service
and family members, as well as to
reservists regardless of activation status, survivors, and separated service
members until 180 days after their
retirement, discharge or end-of-tour
date, Anthony Jackson, a Military
OneSource program analyst, told
DOD News.
Because it’s online, the service is
available to eligible tax-filers regardless of where they are. “They can do
one federal and up to three state tax
returns - again, at no cost to the service or family member,” Jackson said.
This year, he said, the service is adding features to accommodate those
with special tax-filing needs.
“If your tax situation includes rental
property, charitable deductions or
mortgage interest, this software can
accommodate those particular situations,” he said.
Tax experts also are available by
phone at no cost for anyone who may
have questions before they get down
to using the online tax preparation
software.
“You’re getting individuals when
you’re talking - tax consultants who
are thoroughly educated on the military situation, no matter what it is,”
Jackson said, including knowledge of
special tax exemptions for combat
duty and other situations unique to
the military.
The tax service being offered by
Military OneSource is active now.
Military OneSource was established
by the Defense Department in 2002 to
provide comprehensive information
on military life free of charge.

“I feel like I’m coming back to life

Tomas Carrasquel, a first-time rider
in this year’s Soldier Ride.
Carrasquel was injured July 2013

“[Soldier Ride] makes me feel

said Carrasquel, describing his reaction to the support from the Key
West community.
“Right now, the Wounded Warrior
Project and these warriors you see

buddies out here in Key West. So
thank you very much. I really appreciate what you do,” Schnock said
in closing.

port at Naval Base San Diego.
Railgun on public display at EXPO
FROM OFFICE OF
NAVAL RESEARCH
PUBLIC AFFAIRS
T
he Electromagnetic
Railgun - a weapon
that will play a significant role in the future
of the U.S. Navy - will be
on display to the public
for the first time on the
East Coast Feb. 4-5 at the
Naval Future Force Science
and Technology EXPO in
Washington, D.C.
With Chief of Naval
Operations Adm. Jonathan
Greenert set as the event's
keynote speaker on Feb. 4,
the EXPO promises to be
a window into the future
of the U.S. Navy, showcasing the latest advances in
power projection and force
protection.
"This year's Expo will
showcase the naval portfolio
of innovative breakthrough
technologies that are shaping our warfighting tactics
today and changing the way
our Sailors and Marines will
operate in the future," said
Chief of Naval Research
Rear Adm. Mat Winter. "The
Electromagnetic Railgun
is among several disruptive capabilities that the
Naval Research Enterprise
is championing to ensure
a dominant, capable and
relevant naval force for the
future."
Experts from ONR, Naval
Sea Systems Command
and BAE Systems, Inc., will
be on hand at the display
and in breakout sessions to
address the technical developments of the weapon.
The Railgun program
continues to move toward
scheduled at-sea testing
in 2016. Its revolutionary
technology relies on electricity instead of traditional
chemical propellants, with
magnetic fields created
by high electrical currents
launching projectiles at distances more than 100 nautical miles-and at speeds that
exceed Mach 6, or six times
the speed of sound.
That velocity allows the
weapon's projectiles to rely
on kinetic energy for maximum effect, and reduces
the amount of high explosives needed to be carried
on ships. It also minimizes
the dangers of unexploded
ordnance remaining on the
battlefield.
"The
Electromagnetic
Railgun brings significant
technological advances to
our Sailors and Marines,"
said Roger Ellis, program
manager at ONR. "As the
system moves forward
along its planned schedule
from the laboratory launcher, we've achieved break-
throughs in compact power
and gun design, and will
test the next phase of prototype at both sea- and landbased sites in 2016 and
2017."
The EXPO is the Navy's
premier event to share
information, discuss research opportunities and
build science and technology partnerships between
the Navy and Marine Corps,
industry and academia.
Formerly titled the Science
and Technology Partnership
Conference, the biennial
event draws thousands
of attendees from around
the world.

Key West Little Conch Baseball is looking for umpires and
scorekeepers for the upcoming season. Prefer high school age
or older to apply.
Previous umpiring or scorekeeping experience is beneficial, but
not required, but applicants must understand the game. Training
will be provided. We will monitor your progress and provide
feedback. You will continue to learn throughout the season,
and will be expected to share your game experiences with your
fellow umpires and scorekeepers.
Those applying must be responsible, reliable and enthusiastic,
and be willing to learn and work to improve.
Scorekeepers will have the important responsibility of tabulating
league statistics on a weekly basis, and forwarding that
information to league officials.
The season starts Feb. 7. Preseason preparations will begin the
first week of January.
Those interested should contact Director of Umpires Gary E.
Maitland by calling 334-717-1533, or by sending an email to

adapt emotionally as they transition to the new
environment. NAS Key West now has a military and
