MARCH 1, 2015 z Rev. Patrick G. Cecil, Pastor SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT “We begin anew when we rid ourselves of wrongdoing and take on Christ.” MISSION STATEMENT MASS SCHEDULE We are a community of believers, proclaiming that Jesus is Lord. We come together as Catholics to celebrate the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, to hear and be transformed by the Word of God, to bring Christian values and love into our world, and to live and share the teachings of Jesus. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, we strive as a parish family to further the Kingdom of God, making God’s presence felt and extending the caring spirit of Jesus. Patrick G. Cecil WHEN WE DON’T UNDERSTAND I was never really good at Math, even though my dad was an accountant. Maybe that, in part, accounts for my being a priest. Religion is neither mathematical or scientific. Perhaps that’s why when it comes to our faith there are things we don’t understand. Take for example the Transfiguration. We find it in the Gospel of Matthew, Luke and (today) in Mark. But none of the gospels offer an explanation of its meaning. It was beyond the range of their experience and for that matter, beyond ours as well. In one sense, the Transfiguration is a total mystery, but in another it is part of life. We don’t understand it, but it is one of many things we do not understand. Do most of us know what electricity is, besides that it comes out of a socket and is turned on and off by a switch? Do we know how a brown cow who eats green grass gives white milk? There are many mysteries in life, including the Transfiguration. How do we deal with them? What do we do when we don’t understand? In these moments, it helps to have patience. By being patient and waiting a little while, we might be able to see more clearly. In the gospel, the disciples did not understand what Jesus meant when he spoke of rising from the dead. They kept discussing it, which may or may not have helped. But on that first Easter morning, the light dawned in more ways than one. By the power of God, Jesus rose from the dead and transcended human life and death. They may not have understood Jesus’ words completely, but they were closer to understanding than before. Think of our own experience growing up. When we were little we didn’t always understand, much less agree with our parents. Why do homework when it is much more fun to play? Why should we eat vegetables when ice cream tastes so much better? Sometimes we thought we had the meanest parents ever! Yet now, with the passage of time, we understand some things more that we didn’t understand before. This doesn’t mean our parents were always right, but they were right more times than not; even when we thought they were wrong. It was just a matter of being patient. We may be puzzled by the Transfiguration or any number of things we don’t understand; but one part of today’s gospel is clear: the voice from the cloud saying “This is my Beloved Son. Listen to him.” We can understand that and we can do it. Grappling with life’s mysteries is a good thing. They help us to grow and to stretch our minds. We can get bogged down with mysteries and forget the simple truths. We won’t comprehend all of the mysteries in life, but Jesus said “Love your enemies” and we can comprehend that. Jesus said “Forgive those who sin against you” and we understand that. Jesus said “Do unto others as you would have them do to you” and we get that. When we don’t understand, let’s exercise a little patience and a little humility, take up the things we do understand and keep following Christ. And God said that these things are good. We find God in these good things he made, and so we must take care of creation, both for ourselves and for all of our human family. ݻGod makes a promise to Abraham and his descendants, and God keeps his promises. What promises do we make to those who will come after us, especially in thinking about how we care for God’s creation? ݻAbraham’s faith in God—not some legal contract— is what allowed God to act in the life of Abraham’s family. How often do we try to regulate how God works? Is this thinking not as God does, but as human beings do? Do we allow the Spirit to move in us? ݻThis week’s CRS Rice Bowl Story of Hope takes us to Nicaragua, where we are reminded of the essential link between the health of the earth and the health of humanity. Betty Hollander TRANSFORMATION UPDATE 7th Commandment: Thou shalt not steal (Exodus 20: 15) Action in the “steal” category could range from shoplifting to major corporate manipulations. Again, these are activities that are probably not commonplace among the good folks of St. Mary of the Woods. But as we are reviewing each commandment in relation to our daily lives, a few danger zones come to mind. If you’re checking out at the Jewel, and are charged for an item you didn’t buy, you will undoubtedly go to the customer service area and work out the problem. On the other hand, if an $8.99 item is rung up as $3.99 will you also go to Customer Service and point our the error? It’s really a two way street. If you order a second drink at dinner and the waiter only shows one on your bill, do you correct the error? These issues clearly don’t fall into the mortal sin area, but they do reflect your character and, in some instances, “educate” your children. Be fair and honest. 847-518-0882 PRAY THE ROSARY FOR PEACE www.deaconchuck.com You can follow Deacon Chuck on-line for articles, homilies or to leave a message. Page 8 St. Mary of the Woods — March 1, 2015 = Second Sunday of Lent www.smow.org STEWARDSHIP - THOUGHTS ON GIVING If we give according to God’s principles, God will give back to us. The young man who gave his loaves and fishes didn’t have to go without dinner. Stewardship reminds us to count our blessings, acknowledge God’s gifts to us, and express thanks to God by a proportionate giving of our time, talent and treasure. “God can multiply his favors among you so that you may always have enough of every thing and end even a surplus for good works.” (II Corinthians 9:8) The decision to give has not so much to do with calendars and budgets. Really, the decision to give is really a matter of putting your life with God into perspective. Next Sunday’s collection will be donated to a special parish priests’ discretionary fund established by the Alms Advisory Committee. Through this fund, our priests are able to provide modest assistance to those in the parish facing a particular hardship. Your support will help a neighbor, perhaps someone you wanted to help but didn’t know how. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Please be generous. Thank you! Consider enrolling in FaithDirect as a means of consistent giving. Electronic giving through Faith Direct is based on the stewardship model of sacrificial giving in which we place God First. It is not just a financial transaction, but an entire program that enhances stewardship principles. By participating in this programmed giving, you are able to donate to the parish consistently and we are better able to budget, knowing in advance the funds that will be available on a regular basis. Consider your many blessings and pray about what level of giving would be appropriate for your circumstance. I’d like to recommend the Faith Direct program to you. In the last two months the Parish suffered the loss of over $4000 in donations due to account suspensions. The most common fix for the problem is updating credit card information. FaithDirect notifies donors of this. Please respond if you are contacted by FaithDirect regarding updating suspended account information. There is a catch-up feature that permits donors to take care of planned donations that failed to clear, simply by using this feature. Please consider supporting St. Mary of the Woods with electronic donations through FaithDirect. St. Mary of the Woods — March 1, 2015 = Second Sunday of Lent www.smow.org EDUCATIONAL NEWS Religious Education Corner Confirmation went very well on Saturday. Bishop Kane engaged the students as well as the adults.. On Sunday, we attended the 9:00 am Mass together. Students brought white socks for the homeless and presented them at the Offertory. Walt Schmit and Bill Bunker gathered the socks after Mass assisted by Hank Wagner and Samantha Garnett. Carolyn Murphy will deliver them to a shelter servicing the homeless. This week we highlight Pat Marchman, our 6th grade teacher. Pat has been a parishioner since 1994. She started to teach Religious Education in ’97 and has really enjoyed the students and being a part of this community. Pat was born on the Southside of Chicago, attended St. Mary Star of the Sea School, and was in the first graduating class at Curie High School. While attending business college, she joined a youth group called OATS, at I.C. Parish and went on to become a Youth Minister. Pat has had two careers, so far; one in Accounting and Office Management and more recently as a Licensed Social Worker. She is the mother of Frank who served 6 ½ years in the United States Marine Corp. Since 2004, she has worked in the Drug and Alcohol field at a halfway house counseling victims of domestic violence and women in recovery. She has been trained by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to provide community seminars. She has co-facilitated survivor group meetings. She spent four years working as an elder abuse investigator for the State of Illinois, has worked with chronically ill adults at home and in institutional settings, and is now working with the Mentally ill population providing community support services and decreasing their homelessness through HUD grants. Every year for the past 25 yearsth or so Pat has had the honor of taking students 7 grade and older to REACHOUT, introducing them to a multigenerational retreat supported by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Pat says, “I have seen many children grow in their faith and become leaders in their Catholic communities. My motto is ‘The Lord respects me when I work, but he loves me when I sing,’ and my singing at St. Mary of the Woods has truly been fun and a blessing.” Pat is a true blessing to us. Fair Trade began in 1946 when Edith Ruth Byler imported handicrafts from low income women in Puerto Rico and displaced people in Europe. This became the foundation for Ten Thousand Villages, North America's first Fair Trade organization and the United State's first retail Fair Trade store. The concept of Fair Trade has been around for awhile. All Fair Trade employees work in environmentally safe and secure conditions. Most work in their homes, villages or cooperatives. There is no forced child labor. Farmers use eco-friendly farming practices and artisans are encouraged to use raw materials or recycled items to minimize their environmental footprint. Traditional arts are kept alive and taught to the next generation. Fair Trade partnerships are longstanding and ongoing and encourage discourse between producers an buyers. Farmers and artisans are involved in the entire process. At it's heart, Fair Trade is about building respectful, enduring trade relationships Catholic Relief Services (CRS), which is an organization of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has a large Fair Trade Program. Their Fair Trade programs support the goal of CRS which is to help us live the Gospel message by serving the poor. At Saint Mary of the Woods we strive in a small way to live the Gospel message by supporting the Fair Trade program. The coffee and other products we sell at St. Mary of the Woods are from Equal Exchange, which is a Fair Trade coffee partner of CRS.
