I am truly hopeless,” Kate went on. “Well,” I said finally, “argue for your limitations and you get to keep them.” “You and your philosophy!” she yelled. “What are we going to do for dinner?” “I’ll spring for pizza and a salad before Bingo,” I said. We were early and sat near the caller, who was a woman from our neighborhood. She was inclined to be talkative before the action started and asked for some suggestions for the special games. “I like the ‘h’ in either direction,” I said. “That’s a good idea.” The young woman looked at Kate. “Oh, don’t ask me,” said Kate. “I am such a dummy. I would screw the whole game up.” “She’s down on herself tonight,” I said. “Ordinarily she’s not so bad.” “Give me another bit of your wisdom,” said Kate gloomily. I thought for a minute, then said, “Come. Be silent with me.” “That’s a great idea,” she said. “I won’t speak again tonight.” It worked out rather well except Kate Bingoed on the ‘h’ and had to call out to get her winnings. When we left for the evening, she was in a much better mood and hummed happily as she thought of the event. Then she held up two crossed fingers. “I want to speak,” she said. “Permission granted,” I said. “I’ve decided. I’m going to take a cooking class and learn how to do stuff in the kitchen.” “What a good idea,” I said. “And I will continue to be your experimental group or whatever you call it. Just don’t be so down on yourself.” “I promise,” said Kate solemly. Page 5; Bingo Bugle (Nevada) March 2015 GOOD BINGO SURPRISE! Stewart and Barbara are visiting Las Vegas from England. Congratulations Regina! are going through a tremendous conflict and you cannot rely on anyone for an answer—not even yourself (you are also the doctor.) I encourage you to make a list of Pros and Cons about your difficult decision. When the Pros are more numerous than the Cons, make your decision and stick by it, knowing that you have made the wisest choice. Good luck. —Dream Lady Difficult Decisions ■ Make a list of pros and cons Dear Dream Lady, A few nights ago I dreamed about a woman giving birth to twins. No one sees me in the room. A baby girl came out with eyes, nose, mouth, ears and hair. Then a baby boy comes out with no eyes, nose, mouth, ears or hair. I asked the doctor “How is he going to eat?” The doctor said, “Through his belly button.” I asked the doctor, “How is he going to breathe?” The doctor did not know. What does my dream mean? Amanda, La Marque, Texas Dear Amanda, If you have been reading my column, you know by now, that any person you do not know represents you in your dream. Your babies reflect the male and female part of your personality. It sounds like you Page 6; Bingo Bugle (Nevada) March 2015 Dear Dream Lady, I was standing outside. Suddenly rain began pouring down my driveway ruining items in my garage and a small cabin I rent on my property. Lots of people, including my renter and ex-husband were huddled on the ground crying. No one knew where the water was coming from. After awhile it slowed down and stopped, but I was so shook up, I was late to work. Tanya M., St. Paul, Minnesota Dear Tanya, Your dream is interesting because your home was not damaged, but your garage and rental house were. A building symbolizes you, so the “inner you” (i.e. you home) is protected, but the garage that stores items and the rental cabin are damaged. The rushing water says you face almost insurmountable obstacles—perhaps to do with your renter and ex-husband? Keep a dream journal for the next month and see if you discover a pattern. I think you are in a “survival mode” of prioritizing what is important for you to keep your sanity. Your dream reflects your outpouring of turmoil. —Dream Lady Mail your dreams to Dream Lady at P.O. CashBallupdates.com How fast is your caller? I get a lot about varying reports on many aspects of Bingo in my mailbag (at [email protected]) each month. Recently, I found a nice letter from George in Minnesota. I am not sure I’ve mentioned this letter before. If I did, it’s worth repeating. George writes: “Bob, you wrote a column of interest about your encountering really SLOW Bingo. On a recent visit to a hall we had a similar experience. It happened while we were traveling in the Alamogordo, New Mexico area. “We found a Bingo hall, they had “9on packs.” (This kind of Bingo sheet has nine cards printed on one large sheet.) “We usually play 12 cards…sometimes two 6-ons, but we decided nine would be plenty. We noticed very one else was buying 3 and 4 packs. “We turned to each other and wondered aloud how anyone could play that many cards. How could they keep up? We soon found out. “It seems that the callers used a 45-second interval between each number announcement. This was plenty of time to mark large numbers of cards, but, having only a 9-on, there was a lot of waiting for my friend and I. “At this hall, they also played a pull tab game between each Bingo game. Needless to say, it was a LONG evening. We won’t be going there again.” George, thanks for the nice report. I have seen the widest variety of speeds of calling during my travels. I would safely say that 15 percent of all halls call the numbers too quickly. This also means that callers who are not easily understood at a normal speed, become even less articulate when racing through calls. My rule of thumb is: If you have to constantly consult the “tote” board to see what number was just called, then either the caller is too quick or mumbles or the sound system is too quiet. As I have said far too many times, we Bingo players are the ones who PAY to make Bingo possible. If we have a problem at a hall, we have the right and the obligation to say something. And, don’t go yelling at the runners or the callers. Ask, politely, to speak to the manager of the hall. If he or she tells you that the problem cannot be corrected, that means that he or she has a “boss” somewhere. You need to find out who that “boss” is and deal with him or her…politely. Please, friends, work with me to preserve the game we love the best. We must play as often as we can; we must take friends and family and introduce others to the game. Let’s not take Bingo for granted. Next time: More from the e-mail mailbag. ARIZONA Tucson . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Since March is such a changeable month with warm spring-like temperatures, late season snowstorms, and everything in between, one can understand how this saying might hold true. However, the origin of March’s lion and lamb phrase relates more to astronomy than meteorology. March’s lions and lambs actually refer to star constellations in the March skies. The lion pattern is more prominent in the night sky toward the start of March; the lamb pattern the end of March. We have equal chances of blizzards or sunburn solely dependent on the whims of Mother Nature; and she can be a spiteful old buzzard when dreams of sunshine are dancing in our heads. So how are you dressing for St. Patrick’s Day? Chances are that on March 17, you’ll be decked out in vibrant green or maybe stylish orange. My husband has made it his mission to wear orange and explain to all that he is Protestant Irish, not Catholic Irish. Green represents Catholic Ireland; orange, Protestant Ireland. Ireland’s flag is green, orange and white with FORTUNET "BINGO STAR" (702) 796-9090 Connee Price hit a cash ball here at Fiesta Henderson 3 months prior to this picture. She and Sandy Murphy were playing here again trying to do it again; we hope that you both got to yell bingo for the big bucks at this all paper hall. GAMING ARTS, LLC (702) 818-8943 It was a lucky day for James Schnieder when he won the Cash Ball at Pahrump Nugget for $2,524. Congratulations and continued good luck playing bingo in Pahrump! white representing peace between the two factions. As for me, I drink green beer while eating oranges and that goes a long way in keeping the peace between my husband and me. Two more March holidays are unofficial but still my personal favorites. March 22 is National Goof Off Day and March 30 is National I Am in Control Day. Probably, an overworked someone invented Goof Off Day which is dedicated to fun because she or he needed some down time; then the idea spread via internet and social media. It works for me and I’m retired. I can spend an entire day, not necessarily March 22, reading, eating, and watching TV and not feel guilty. Robert is not good at goofing off and tends to be in perpetual motion cleaning, cooking, and fixing this or that. It makes me tired watching him so I nap a lot. It’s not my fault he thinks goofing off is a sin while I embrace it. On March 30, 1981, President Regan was wounded in an assassination attempt. His Secretary of State, Alexander Haig, later stated to reporters, “I am in control here.” Afterward some wiseacre designated this date every year as National I Am in Control Day. It’s a day to take charge of our lives and stop acting like drunken monkeys in a tequila bar. On this day or any other when everything is going wrong with the toilet overflowing and the black screen of death decorating the laptop, do what I do when my life spins out of control. Sit down with another cup of coffee and read the newspaper. Being in control isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The best way to goof off is to play Bingo. I am definitely not in control there because if I were, I’d win more. But, it’s relaxing and takes my mind off the chaos than may be happening in other areas of my life. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. E-mail me at [email protected] to share your favorite ways to goof off. Dear Aunt Bingo, I volunteer as a teaching assistant at an elementary school—which is walking distance from my house. It has been a wonderful second career since I took early retirement. I enjoy the school, the teachers and the other staff—but especially the children, who are so young and bright and have so much of their lives ahead of them. One morning I was helping some students with a wall-art project that included creating a checkerboard pattern background made with sheets of colored paper. When the background was completed, I stepped back and commented that it looked like a giant Bingo card. The 12 or so students stared back at me blankly. “You don’t think so?” I asked them. “What’s a Bingo card?” one of the girls finally said. I was stunned. Here was a group of intelligent youngsters who apparently had never heard of Bingo. “It’s a game,” I explained, “with rows of numbers that someone calls out and you try and match to win.” “Oh yeah,” another one said. “I think I’ve heard of that.” A few of the other students nodded, while the rest continued to stare. “You add the numbers up or something,” she added. It was one of those jaw-dropping moments—like when you meet someone who has never heard of saddle shoes, Sputnik or John Wayne. I felt a little ancient. Then realized I now had a mission. “I’ll see if it’s okay to bring Bingo to school sometime,” I said. In response, one of the boys shook his head and rolled his eyes. “Great…more math,” he moaned. —Elaine G., Valley Stream, New York Dear Elaine, I guess in the age of computer gaming and digital entertainment, games like traditional Bingo are taking longer to reach the newest generation. Hopefully the teacher in charge will permit you to bring in one of those Dollar Store sets so you can show the kids what you are talking about. Perhaps you can give away bite-sized candy bars as prizes. Once the first couple of kids win those, I’m sure there will be lots of interest. It seems to me that Bingo can be very educational: For example, in teaching number and pattern recognition, taking part in non-physical competition, and learning that you can’t win them all. Later in life—when they discover that you can also go out for a day or evening of Bingo, socialize, and win some serious cash in the process—it should also conjure up nostalgic memories of playing Bingo Page 24; Bingo Bugle (Nevada) March 2015 Bugle Cruise News ■ Your exotic ports of call: St. Maarten; part one of a four-part series By Jeffrey Charboneau Special to the Bingo Bugle The 27th Annual World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise sets sail from Florida on November 7th and includes stops at four incredible Caribbean ports: St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Thomas, and Nassau, The Bahamas. Your first port of call—St. Maarten— is part of a single island divided into two; its possession has been shared by France and The Netherlands for more than threeand-a-half centuries. The dividing line is virtually nonexistent, however, and people cross back and forth without even noticing they are entering a new country. Yet each side has managed to retain much of the distinctiveness of its homeland. Dutch St. Maarten, with its busy cruise port and bustling commercial district, has long been an active center for trade and tourism. St. Martin, the French side, emphasizes comfort and seclusion. The luxury resorts found there provide lavish accommodations, and the restaurants offer some of the finest dining experiences anywhere in the Caribbean. Between St. Maarten and St. Martin, Bingo tournament cruise participants will find just about every kind of distraction imaginable for a perfect holiday in the sun. Attractions in St. Maarten include water sports, hiking, horseback riding, and other outdoor experiences. A fantastic activity is the duty-free shopping available on both sides of the island. Luxury items from all over the world—European fashions, Dutch and Japanese electronics, Indonesian batiks and Chinese embroidery, jewelry, leather, crystal, liquors, and fine porcelain—are available at awesome prices. St. Maarten is also home to a range of gaming casinos all easily accessible by ground transportation from the ship. Other areas of interest include the historic fortress, Fort St. Louis; the open-air Marigot Market; Grand Case beach and village; Paradise Peak, the highest point on the island; and Orleans, the picturesque French Quarter. Using a metal spatula, remove the wafers, and store in a sealed container. Makes about 24 wafers. Eat Your Way to Good Health EASY PARMESAN WAFERS “You are what you eat!” The phrase was coined in 1923 as part of an advertising campaign, but the idea that you need to eat good food to be fit and healthy has been around much longer. Even simple diet choices can boost our immune system, said Susan Mills-Gray, Nutrition and Health Education specialist with University of Missouri Extension. Here are some simple things that can boost your immune system to work at peak performance. Get plenty of liquids to help prevent viruses and bacteria from taking up residence in your body. According to Dr. Riva Rahl of the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, “The mucus in your nose is actually one of the key physical barriers that keep germs out of your body. When you’re not well hydrated, it dries up and doesn’t provide that barrier.” Protein is a building block for a healthy immune system. Choose lean red meats, poultry and fish, dried beans and soy. You also can choose protein-rich plant sources with heart-healthy fat, like peanut butter and nuts. Foods with antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E protect cells—including those of your immune system—from damage by toxins in the environment. Choose citrus fruits/juices, melons, mangoes, kiwi, peppers, tomatoes, berries, broccoli, cabbage, sweet/white potatoes, winter squash, leafy greens, almonds, hazelnuts, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, safflower oil, whole grains and fortified cereals several times a day. Eat probiotic foods to help build up the good bacteria in the intestines. These bacteria play a role in helping fend off illnesses. Any fermented food is rich in this type of good bacteria, so choose yogurt, sauerkraut, tofu, brine-treated pickles and aged cheese at least daily. Add a zinc-rich food to your daily diet to increase the production of white blood cells in your body. Research shows that this effect can reduce the number of days you’ll suffer from a cold. Some foods rich in zinc are yogurt, lean red meat, poultry Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. On a non-stick cookie sheet or one lined with a piece of kitchen parchment paper, place 2 teaspoons of cheese in a little mound. He had to split it, but was still happy to take home $7,259 to his Henderson home. Way to go! Win or lose, everyone is having a good time in the Palace Station Bingo room. Las Vegas 702-362-1243 10% DISCOUNT WITH THIS AD CashBallupdates.com Dear Looking, While the U.S. job market has improved slightly over the past year or so, challenges persist for many older job seekers. Fortunately, there are a number of free online tools and in-person training centers scattered across the country today that can help you find employment. Here’s what you should know. Online Resources If you have Internet access, there are a number of 50-and-older online employment networks that can help you connect with companies that are interested in hiring older workers. Two of the best are workreimagined.org, a resource developed by AARP that combines career advice, job listings and online discussion tied to LinkedIn’s professional networking platform. And retirementjobs.com, which offers a job search engine that lists thousands of jobs nationwide from companies that are actively seeking workers over the age of 50. It also provides job-seeking tips and advice, helps with resume writing and allows you to post your resume online for companies to find you. Some other good 50-plus job seeking sites to try are workforce50.com, retiredbrains.com, retireeworkforce.com, and encore.org a resource that helps older workers find meaningful work in the second half of life. In-Person Help Another good place to get help finding a job is at a Career One-Stop center. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, these are free job resource centers that can help you explore career options, search for jobs, find training, write a resume, prepare for an interview and much more. There are around 3,000 of these centers located throughout the country. To find one near Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. I’m 62 and have been out of work for nearly a year now and need some help. Looking For Work FREE ADMISSION THE “STRIP” ■ For older job seekers OPEN EVERY FRIDAY SATURDAY & SUNDAY 10AM-6PM DECATUR Employment resources you, call 877-348-0502 or go to careeronestop.org. Depending on your financial situation, another program that may help is the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). Also sponsored by the Department of Labor, SCSEP offers access to training and part time job placements in a wide variety of community service positions such as day care centers, senior centers, governmental agencies, schools, hospitals, libraries and landscaping centers. To qualify, participants must be over 55, unemployed and have poor employment prospects. To learn more or locate a program in your area visit www.doleta.gov/seniors or call 877-872-5627. Work at Home If you’re interested in working at home, there are many opportunities depending on your skills, but be careful of rampant work-at-home scams that offer big paydays without much effort. Some of the more popular work-athome jobs include “customer service agents” who fields calls from their employers’ customers and prospective customers—you don’t place telemarketing calls. Agents earn an average of $8 to $15 an hour and many also receive incentives and commission, too. To find these jobs see arise.com, alpineaccess.com, liveops.com and workingsolutions.com. If you have good typing skills there are “transcriptionist” jobs that pay around $10 per hour for typing verbatim accounts of board meetings, presentations, conference calls, etc. Companies that hire transcriptionists are tigerfish.com, ubiqus.com, ctran.com. And if you have a college degree, online “tutoring” or “proofreading” jobs are always available. See tutor.com to find tutoring opportunities—which pay between $10 and $15 per hour. Or, if you have some writing or editing experience, proofreading pays $12 to $20 per hour. See firstediting.com and cactusglobal.com to look for proofreading jobs. For more work at home ideas and resources, see retiredbrains.com and click on the “Work from Home” tab on the left side of the page. Start a Business If you’re interested in starting a small business but could use some help getting started, the U.S. Small Business Administration offers tips, tools and free online courses that you can access at sba.gov. www.fantasticindoorswapmeet.com Rock Shot is an all-electronic bingo session that is played at Green Valley Ranch on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 9pm. Minimum to play is $25 – 9 games pay $100; coverall pays $1000. Every time there is a winner, the whole table gets a shot of liquor. There is a DJ playing music, a host to interact with the players, and neon lighting throughout the room. This fun-filled session includes players of all ages. Certain games even have prizes attached to the game pay. Jennifer M from Fort Mohave, AZ wrote, “The workers are amazing! Rock Shot Bingo was the BEST thing ever invented! My parents who are die hard bingo players absolutely thought it was the funnest thing ever and asked if we did it every week”. And March promises to be one of those months that will make it into your personal history book. You’ll want to make this mantra of Michelangelo’s one of your own, too. As he said: “Genius is eternal patience.” Slow but steady, anchored to all of your vitality, guarantees success. Lucky Days: 17-21 Lucky Numbers: 3-59 TAURUS: Apr. 21-May 21: This month you’ll want to turn to the supernatural, mystical or spiritual for the inspiration you’ll need to remain calm and centered amidst one of the year’s most challenging months. Use your intimate relationship to the natural world to help remind you, daily, of what the Greek Heraclitus taught us: “Panta rhei” Everything flows. Lucky Days: 17-19 Lucky Numbers: 23-68 GEMINI: May 22-June 21: There’s an old Moroccan saying that goes like this: “Friendship is honey, but don’t eat it all.” You’ll want to practice discretion this month between how much you’re giving of your time to others and how much you are expecting in return. Aim to keep things light with your circle of peers; balance will insure that you’ve found your sweet spot with others. Lucky Days: 15-25 Lucky Numbers: 4-14 CANCER: June 22-July 22: You’re feeling the strong, dramatic currents of this month unlike any other sign. Fortunately, as a water creature, you have the skills to cope and ride the wild waves. A key to help you along the way from William Blake: “Excessive sorrow laughs. Excessive joy weeps.” Yep, everything shifts into its opposite. But you knew that already. Lucky Days: 9-23 Lucky Numbers: 9-68 LEO: July 23-Aug. 23: The lively planet Mars enters your house of faith and suddenly you’ve got a brand new attitude and philosophy about living. And being the self-expressive lion that you are, you’re ready to make a declaration of intent that, when delivered tactfully, will inspire those in your close circle. You’re a natural leader and this month you confirm your reputation with real flair. Lucky Days: 19-23 Lucky Numbers: 11-71 VIRGO: Aug. 24-Sept. 23: Emerson once said that: “Our faith comes in moments, our vice is ha- LIBRA: Sept. 24-Oct. 23: Don’t let time force you into a passive corner or posture. Remember: Not to decide, is to decide. And as much as you enjoy peace and harmony, you equally dislike stasis and boredom. Devise a plan to keep moving forward. Allow your appreciation of beauty, art and science to inspire you in all of your efforts, especially those that involve your creativity. Lucky Days: 4-17 Lucky Numbers: 44-59 SCORPIO: Oct. 24-Nov. 22: March promises to be a trial for all of us and you’re ready. Remember: What doesn’t disable us will make us stronger, as an old German philosopher once said. The full moon on the 5th is the ringing of the bell that sets a new cycle of self-discovery in motion. You’re good at getting rid of the outworn, and this is the month to cut it all lose. Lucky Days: 11-24 Lucky Numbers 17-73 SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 23-Dec. 21: Saturn in your sign puts the focus on reshaping your selfimage; starting with your body. Don’t neglect the benefits of healthy routines, especially if you’re clear about what you need to omit and remove from your life—make sure you follow through. You’ll reap the benefits that discipline can inspire, including a new sense of wonder about your life. Lucky Days: 19-24 Lucky Numbers: 38-46 CAPRICORN: Dec. 22-Jan. 20: Get ready to do some heavy lifting this month as the full moon on the 5th shines a spotlight on ways to rethink relationships on the home front. Siblings are looking to your down to earth style to help guide them along untried or rocky paths. Help arrives when you align with a long forgotten dream and use it as a guide. Lucky Days: 3-13 Lucky Numbers: 30-75 AQUARIUS: Jan. 21-Feb. 19: Here’s a secret insight for you to contemplate this month, keep it close: You are more important than your problems. As you talk about and focus on what’s wrong in life, the heavier and more contracted your life begins to feel. Try to let go of this habit and let your eye land, each morning, on what is a blessing and a source of bounty in your life. Lucky Days: 12-26 Lucky Numbers: 22-39 PISCES: Feb. 20-Mar. 20: Unplug from the struggle with your intellect and allow your heart to lead the way. Desire and passion, when welcomed, open new doors of opportunity. But you must really feel what it is you want most. And remember, as Antoine de St. Exupery said: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.” Lucky Days: 4-20 Lucky Numbers: 3-43 COFFEE BREAK ANSWERS MARCH 2015 1st 3rd 5th 6th 8th 13th 14th 17th 20th 26th 27th 30th World Compliment Day I Want To Be Happy Day Full Moon Cereal Day DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS Last Quarter Moon Potato Chip Day ST.
