Season of Lent
The season of Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and self-examination in preparation for the
celebration of the resurrection of the Lord at Easter. It is a period of 40 days — like the flood
of Genesis, Moses’ sojourn at Mount Sinai, Elijah’s journey to Mount Horeb, Jonah’s call to
Ninevah to repent and Jesus’ time of testing in the wilderness. (The Sundays in Lent are not
counted in this reckoning of the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter, as every Lord’s
Day is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.)
In the early church, Lent was a time of preparation for the celebration of baptism at the Easter
Vigil. In many communities of faith it remains a time to equip and nurture candidates for
baptism and confirmation and to reflect deeply on the theme of baptismal discipleship.

Lenten Bible Study: Please join us on Wednesday’s as we begin our Lenten Bible Study. The
study chosen this year for the season is “The Seven Last Words of Christ”. The study “is
comprised of seven lessons, each on the scriptures toward the Cross during Holy Week. Each
lesson is gathered from the accounts of Good Friday in all four Gospels. They provide us an
opportunity to focus on the cross and on how Jesus understood and expressed his sacrifice of
dying for our sins. We look forward to your participation in this engaging and reflective study!

Presbyterian Men's Retreat - The Men's Council is sponsoring its second annual men's retreat on Saturday, March
14th, from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, in the Fellowship Hall at First United. It will focus on spiritual commitment and
renewal. Participants will include men from First United and other churches in the Presbytery of Charlotte. The
registration cost is $50.00 per person and should be paid to Charles Jackson not later than Friday, March 6th. We
encourage all FUPC men to participate in this growth experience.

Souper Bowl of Caring Offering: We collected $275.38 for this year’s charity, Loaves and Fishes! We received a
special Thank you note from the Loaves and Fishes organization. Our donation will help them continue to meet the
nutritional needs of their clients, many of whom are children.

generation as churches of the former Catawba Synod reflect on the past and share how present times are renewing

special thanks goes out to Rev. Tuggle for securing a spot for us on the 12:00 news on February 20th, 2015. Rev. Tuggle will
appear again on WBTV BounceTV on March 3 at 8:40 A.M. Be sure to tune in and spread the word!

Music has many languages and Paul Whitley speaks them all fluently. Gospel, R&B,
Contemporary, and the smooth sensation of jazz. He began at age 8 playing drums,
then moved into a prayerfully playing piano masterfully. Whitley has played with music
legends like gospel great Marvin Sapp, and renowned jazz artist, Steve Cole, Joey
Sommerville, Walter Beasley, and many others. His current CD, “Versatility” is a
mixture of gospel, jazz, soul, with inspiring and unique vocal accompaniments. His
unusual sound makes him the premier artist in the nation.
We currently have scholarships available for students seeking to further their education. Applications are being

career as a teenager, and has grown into a dynamic flutist and jazz leader. His clear

Shake Rattle and Roll in concert with the great B.B. King.
JEFFERSON E. GRIGSBY SCHOLARSHIP
The Jefferson E. Grigsby Scholarship Fund was established by family and friends at the death of J.E. Grigsby on
December 5, 1975.
GEORGE W.C. MORELAND SCHOLARSHIP (Undergraduate Educational Scholarship)
This scholarship in memory of The Late George W.C. Moreland was established in December, 1991 by his daughter,
Margaret C. and her husband, Dr. Donald L. Person. The Scholarship Fund will give a maximum of two (2)
scholarships annually to qualified students who are members of First United Presbyterian Church.
