Please send us your good news! Email your information to [email protected]. FROM OUR PRINCIPAL DAVE CLAYPOOL Greetings! Well this has been another crazy winter. Two cold days and a snow day, so far, have brought delight to our students and have created only minor issues here at South. All-in-all, things have worked out well. Please keep in mind that with the emergency closings, the end of the school year will get pushed back, as it was last year. My sincerest thanks to our parents who attended our Winter Curriculum Night. Given participation in recent years’ Winter Curriculum Nights, we felt it was necessary to try something different. While the “open house” wasn’t perfect, the consensus among our faculty and parent surveys was that it was definitely a step in the right direction. There was considerable positive feedback about the opportunity to talk about course options for next year. We will continue to conduct the Fall Curriculum Night as we have in the past, as it provides parents a chance to walk student schedules and meet teachers early in the school year. [email protected] Here’s to no more snow days! GO TIGERS! --Dave Claypool Check out the Tiger Wear Website for great deals! The Tiger Eye is scheduled to be published monthly except for December. Please send your photos, articles, promotions via email to [email protected]. The next deadline is Friday, December 26, but let us know if you need some additional time. These local scholarship applications are due in the Counseling Office NO LATER than 11:00 am on Thursday, February 19, 2014. Additionally, for those students looking to access other national scholarship opportunities, students are advised to set-up an account with www.scholarships.com and/or www.fastweb.com. These sites ask questions that pertain to the student and then they attempt to match various scholarship criteria with the background information provided. There is NO cost to either of these additional sites. See Mr. Pawlak with any questions. “ AP Exam Registration Registration for the 2014-15 AP Exams will open February 12 and close on February 26. President’s Report by Bob Barista: Bob explained how Tiger PAWS revenue is down this year. This is primarily due to revenue in the Outdoor Concession stand being down this past fall due to lower attendance and poor weather at several football games. He further explained that we are going to have several events by Spring to generate funds for Tiger PAWS. We are planning a Lip Sync night for Spring. Date to be set soon. There are other fundraising initiatives in the works as well. Vice President’s Report by Jane Kindlon: Jane will continue to send Tiger PAWS email blasts every other week on Sunday evenings or Monday mornings. These email blasts go to the Tiger PAWS membership. Jane will be working with Committee Chairs to determine what open positions we have for next year. In addition, she will begin forming the 2015 Nominating Committee who will help identify candidates for open Tiger PAWS Board positions and open Tiger PAWS Committee Chairs for the 2015-2016 school year. We know already that we are looking for Chairpeople for the Fall Seasonal Activity Program and Outdoor Concessions. If interested in either of these positions, please contact Jane at [email protected]. Secretary’s Report by Cindy Knoll: Cindy presented the minutes from the October 22, 2014 Tiger PAWS general meeting. Bob Barista made a motion to approve the minutes. Lisa Polezoes seconded the motion. The motion carried and the October minutes were approved. Treasurers’ Report by Lisa Polezoes: Lisa Polezoes presented the Profit and Loss Statement as of December 31st, 2014. Thank you to Patti Eganhouse for her efforts to sell the Seasonal Activity Programs at games and school events. Thanks to her efforts we have earned more than planned, which is SO great! Principal’s Report (by Dave Claypool): Dave explained that the over the past few years, Winter Curriculum Night has not been well attended by parents. Consequently, they would like to do something different for this year’s Winter Curriculum Night which is on Wednesday, January 28th at 7 PM. He would like it to be more of a Showcase of WWS and demonstrate to parents what instruction looks like in today’s classrooms. He would like to include several different examples of instruction and allow parents to rotate through to see the different methods being used. All teachers would still be present so that if their child had a new teacher for the semester, they would still have an opportunity to meet and talk with the new teachers. The final details are still being worked out, but he’s excited about making this change and is hopeful that it will be a positive improvement from previous Winter Curriculum Nights. Bob Barista asked Dave what is being done at WWS to help students remember Chris Herren’s message from his presentation and story he shared last March. Dave said that they are keeping his message on their radar as they plan upcoming events for the students. He indicated that he would love to have Chris Herrin back once every 4 years, since he had such an incredible impact on WWS students and the community. Dave expressed his appreciation for our parent involvement in Tiger PAWS and expressed that we cannot be thanked enough for the wonderful work we do through Tiger PAWS. Committee Reports Allocations (for Gina Harris): Allocation deadlines for teachers/coaches/club sponsors to submit their requests for the remainder of this school year are January 20th and March 16th. The Allocation Request form is available at www.tigerpaws.org on the PAWS Forms page. 10 Volume 20 Number 5 • WWSHS • 1993 Tiger Trail Drive Wheaton Illinois 60189 • www.wwshs.org Tiger PAWS Meeting Minutes January 14, 2015 (continued) Beautification/Landscaping (for Denise King): Improvements to Tiger Paw Park are coming this spring. Fundraising (Linda Butler): Seeking volunteers to work on the Fundraising Committee to help execute the many fundraising ideas Linda has for Tiger PAWS. Would like to get this committee in place by early February. In addition, Linda is considering a Valentines fundraiser of selling flowers during lunch periods. Membership (Teresa Mueller/Jill Cisar): Membership continues to decline as it has the last several years. Last year at this time 606 families had joined. This year 515 families have joined. There was discussion about increasing advertising about Tiger PAWS. We discussed ways to make it easier for people to join Tiger PAWS. The membership committee will continue to look at different ways to increase membership, as it is a critical source of revenue for Tiger PAWS. Operation Safe Celebration (OSC, Post Prom) (Doris & Greg Crutchett): WWS Prom is on Saturday, May 2nd, 2015. Planning for OSC Post Prom party has begun and is in need of Chairpeople for rooms for the event. See the flyer in the Tiger PAWS email blasts for details. Chairpeople positions need to be filled by February 7th. Please consider helping out for this very important event for our students. Greg and Doris announced the Spring Craft Show they are planning that will be held at WWS on Saturday, February 7th, 10 AM to 3 PM, to benefit Post Prom. Please consider volunteering or baking for the event. Details can also be found in the latest Tiger PAWS email blast. Contact Doris at [email protected] for more information. Special Achievement (Meg Zubak): The budget has been reduced for this year. Should be OK for this year because we have leftover lanterns from last year. The committee will need to look at how to change what students receive to be more current, as high school letters with lanterns to put on the letters is a bit out-ofdate. Will continue to recognize these students for their academic achievement, as that priority has not changed for Tiger PAWS. Seasonal Activity Program (Patti Eganhouse): Patti continues to sell the Programs at school events to generate revenue for Tiger PAWS. Tiger Merchandise (for Stephanie Powell): Sales to date is $32,804. There is a change in sale dates. The Lunch Sale will now be on March 10th and March 11th (instead of March 3rd and March 4th). Merchandise will also be on sale at Winter Curriculum night on January 28th, at 8th grade parent orientation on February 4th, and at the Craft Show on February 7th. New Business Red Grange Painting Fundraiser: We are thrilled that a family has agreed to fund the painting. The painting will be done this Spring at which point Tiger PAWS will begin selling prints as yet another source of revenue for Tiger PAWS. Winter Curriculum Night, January 28th: Tiger PAWS will provide hospitality and will have a table to recruit new members for open committee positions. Sue Kerby made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Meg Zubak seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM.
