FROM OUR PRINCIPAL DAVE CLAYPOOL Annually during the holiday season, Wheaton Warrenville South rises to the occasion, raising money, collecting items for pantries, and volunteering time with others. This year was no exception. More than $10,000 was raised for local charities, countless clothing items were given to those less fortunate (including several South students), and hundreds of cumulative hours were spent by Tiger students and staff, aiding people in many ways. One such act of volunteerism took place on Christmas Eve, when current and former students, who took part in the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Program, visited Marklund Children’s Home to help unwrap gifts (See photo below). New Date TBD! Polar Run NEW Date TBD! WWS High School 3rd ANNUAL TIGER DAY OF CARING.... look at all of the great things 250 of our WWS athletes did around our community on Sunday, Dec. 21!!! WAY TO GO TIGERS!!!!!!! Girls basketball – Spent time with residents at Arden Courts in Glen Ellyn Wrestling – Played bingo with residents at the Du Page Convalescent Center This act of kindness was remarkable for many reasons, not the least of which is that students, including those who graduated from South three years ago, felt inspired to set aside holiday time with family to assist others. Nothing generates greater pride than knowing Tigers act in such wonderful ways. Here’s wishing all of Tiger Nation a healthy and joyous 2015. Scholarship Information Scholarship information, both national and local, is available on Naviance, under the “Scholarships” link. Updated throughout the school year, this list of various scholarships includes criteria, due dates, and website links to applications. For the best opportunity to earn awards, students are encouraged to review local scholarships. A list of nearly 20 local scholarships can be downloaded by clicking on the “Local Scholarship Information and Guidelines” link found in the alphabetized list. These local scholarship applications are due in the Counseling Office NO LATER than 11:00 am on Thursday, February 19, 2014. Additionally, for those students looking to access other national scholarship opportunities, students are advised to set-up an account with www.scholarships.com and/or www.fastweb.com. These sites ask questions that pertain to the student and then they attempt to match various scholarship criteria with the background information provided. There is NO cost to either of these additional sites. See Mr. Pawlak with any questions. ONLINE SUMMER SCHOOL COURSES Districts 200, 203, and 204 have joined together to offer online summer school courses. Courses are taught by a teacher from District 200, 203, or 204. Courses are delivered virtually, and students do not have to report to their local school building. Students may work on the course from their own preferred location. Students communicate with the instructor and peers through discussion board, email, instant chats, phone calls, or virtual office hours. This Fall, the boys team was the recipient of the prestigious Myro Rys Sportsmanship Award. The award represents all that coach Guy Callipari wants for the culture of his program including fair play and respect for the opposition and the officials of the game. Callipari states that "the award is a tribute to our soccer family and our community." Having also received the Myro Rys award in 1998, WWS is only the 4th school to have won the award twice since 1977. Tiger Soccer's recent list of awards also includes the girls program earning their 300th win in May of 2013. Callipari was just the 12th coach in Illinois history to reach this milestone and the team has never had a losing record during Callipari's career. Callipari is now closing in on being one of four Illinois coaches to win 300 games in both boys and girls soccer. Coach Callipari has coached our boys and girls soccer teams 24 and 20 years respectively. To add to his list of accomplishments, he was inducted into the IHSSCA Hall of Fame in June of 2012. He was only the 47th inductee (and third Tiger) in the state since the hall of fame's inception in 1988. Callipari likes the idea of representing the city of Wheaton, school, administration and mostly the players in this way. He was a scholarship player himself at Eastern Illinois and played professionally in London and Belgium. Callipari also played three stints with the Canadian National Team. We are also very fortunate to have an extremely experienced and talented group of assistant and JV coaches including Kevin Donahue, Aaron Press, Gary Luckey, Kelly Ball, Elissa Schwass, Eric Stajduhar, and Josh Bacheller. During the girls' last season, they were awarded with the PepsiCo Showdown Lynn and Scott Magneson Community Service Award for the service work during the Tiger Day of Caring. The girls brought home a $1,000 check to WWS. Coach Callipari comments that this is yet another way in which "the Tiger Soccer program continues to be a great vehicle for teaching life lessons and developing outstanding citizens in our community." The team also spreads their good sportsmanship to others by awarding a Pin of Dedication to an opposing player after each game. The player is one who has demonstrated the will to win while maintaining their character and integrity in the process. This is a symbolic gesture of the respect the Tigers have for the opposing program and its players regardless of the outcome. 4 Volume 20 Number 4 • WWSHS • 1993 Tiger Trail Drive Wheaton Illinois 60189 • www.wwshs.org TIGER SPOTLIGHT—TIGER SOCCER (CONTINUED) CAROL MOLINO CONTRIBUTOR The girls program also has an impressive list of Division I athletes, sending players off in recent years to compete at schools such as Miami of Ohio, University of Wisconsin, Spring Hill College, and Purdue. The list also includes senior AJ Jakuszewski, who will play at UIC beginning Fall of 2015. AJ is a 4th year varsity player along with teammates Tori Adomshick, Rachel Conrady and Nikki Molino. AJ has played club soccer since the age of 7 and has known she has wanted to play D1 soccer since age 10. AJ committed to play soccer at UIC the summer after her sophomore year, where she will study Pharmacy. AJ is a very versatile player as she plays defensive positions for her club team and offensive during her high school season. As for her position at UIC, AJ states that she thinks "they will need her somewhere on the defensive or holding mid, but I'm really ready and willing to play whatever position they need me to play." AJ believes the biggest difference between high school and club play is that with high school, you are bringing the many club styles of play all together in one season as well as 4 different age levels. She also states that Callipari is a unique coach in that he is "willing to switch up the formation we are playing in order to meet the needs of the game.........and allow us the best opportunity to win." AJ says that off the field, Callipari "goes out of his way to make sure there are many team bonding moments" of which there is a lengthy list! One of AJ's best memories from Tiger Soccer is "scoring the winning goal against one of our big rivals, Wheaton North, and securing our claim on the Wheaton cup!" The Tiger Soccer program's many awards and impressive record is proof that their philosophy of hard work both on and off the field is working. One of Coach Callipari’s yearly quotes sums up the program’s many successes……”If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together.” Come cheer on the Tigers this season as the girls play in their home opener against Batavia, Saturday, March 21 at 11:00 AM! Winter Souvenir Activity Programs are available at the concessions and at tickets sales of the home games/events...all athletes are in it! You are invited to visit the district’s website, www.cusd200.org, to see the direction we are headed. For the current year, the Board has prioritized four main areas: professional development for staff; integration of technology in the classroom; creation of a master facilities plan; and exploration of alternate sources of revenue. At the beginning of 2014, the District launched a six-month community engagement process, Engage 200, to gain valuable feedback from the community and determine the community’s priorities for the future. “Two of the most important roles of a school board are to connect with the community and clarify the community’s vision for their schools,” says Barbara Intihar, President of the Board of Education. Vision 2018 is a tangible, valuable result from the Engage 200 process. In the coming weeks you will see new developments on the Vision 2018 section of the district’s website with detailed work plans and a dashboard with metrics.
