JESUS AND COMPASSION
“If you wish, you can make me
clean. Moved with compassion,
he stretched out his hand,
touched him, and said to him, “I
do will it. Be made clean.” The
leprosy left him immediately.”
I was ordained a priest for
three years, assigned to our Lady
of Lourdes, West Islip, when I realized that I was out of my
element. I had been trained in all facets of Catholic
theology, and taken a course in the psychology of Group
Dynamics. But I was not prepared to deal with
parishioners with personal and marriage difficulties,
addictions, depression, posttraumatic stress, anxiety
disorders, phobias, obsessions and more. I enrolled at St.
John’s University in Jamaica, Queens for the three-year
pastoral counseling program and attended night school to
complete my graduate degree. Early on in our training, we
were administered a self-assessment that determined how
we scored on being judgmental or non-judgmental in our
approach to people. Scoring above a certain level meant
that you should not continue in your studies. Your
judgments would prevent you from entering into
compassionate care and unconditional positive regard.
Without a genuine compassion, the process of healing
would not be possible.
Compassion, a word that finds its origin in Latin,
meaning to feel with another, is a synonym for love.
When we are listening compassionately, we enter into the
world of the other person so much so that we almost lose
ourselves in them.
I learned that this rapport, or compassionate
connection, is 90% of the psychotherapeutic process.
Believing that someone truly cares and is interested in me
as I am, is life-giving.
In his public ministry, Jesus, the human face of God,
evidences this compassion by seeking out the wounded,
the poor and those excommunicated by society. He
ministers to people afflicted by physical, psychological
and spiritual ailments; and sets them free from their
disabilities.
In the ancient world, before the scientific revolution,
illness was thought by religious leaders to be an indication
of sin committed either by the person or their ancestors.
Physical deformities caused the sufferer to be shunned
and effectively excommunicated, cut off from family
socially (no emotional support) and economically (causing
them to become beggars).
Jesus seeks out the forgotten and unwanted
poor people. He stands in solidarity with the blind
and the lame, the leper and the prostitute, the
tax collector and the public sinner. “It is mercy I
desire, not sacrifice….”
The Catholic Church today continues, as a top
priority, the proclamation of the good news
evidenced in boundless love, particularly for the
defenseless and marginalized.
Who are the lepers of today? The
undocumented immigrant? The homosexual? The
divorced Catholic, remarried outside the Catholic
Church? What response are we called to make to
draw all people into the embrace of our loving
God?
Love is not a passing feeling. It is not an
emotion of the moment. It is a radical
commitment of our entire being to the welfare of
others; regardless of their race, sexual
orientation, country of origin or religion. Our top
priority in love, as for our Savior Jesus Christ, are
the shunned and disconnected, the broken and
wounded of our time.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he
has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the
captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let
the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the
Lord’s favor.” (Isaiah)
Our Lenten fast is not only from food. It also
means fasting from judgments, prejudices and
biases. It means fasting from apathy, indifference
and emotional disconnect. It means repenting of
our sin.
Jesus began his public ministry with this quote
from the prophet Isaiah. The task of proclaiming
the good news is not an option. It has been
handed on to us, baptized Christians, until the
Lord returns.
Peace, Father Bruce

Bulletin Reflection:
Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his only son, Isaac.
St. Paul reminds us that God Himself “did not spare his
own Son.” Are my gifts to the Lord - of my resources, of
my time, of myself - also sacrificial?
Living Stewardship:
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish,
who, through fasting, become more conscious of their
faith and its interaction in daily life!
PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH
This weekend, February 28 and
March 1, Brother James McKnight, a Marist
Brother will speak at all the Masses on
behalf of the Propagation of the Faith. Brother
McKnight is originally from South Ozone
Park and has been a Marist Brother for 54
years and 25 of those years were spent as a
missionary in the Philippines.
There will be a second collection this
weekend for the Propagation of the Faith.
Thank you for your generosity.
A Musical Note and
Reminder:
To set apart Lent as a special time, the following
changes will take place from the First Sunday of
Lent through Palm Sunday.
1) The Penetential Rite will be sung.
This is the Kyrie . It is familiar to the Parish
2) The Prayer of the Faithful Response will be
sung.
This is: “Hear the Prayers That Rise” in the
Music Issue. The First time the Cantor will sing
the entire response, and after each following
petition, only, “Hear our prayer, hear our
prayer, God of compassion, listen to our
prayer.”
3) The Lord’s Prayer and Doxology will be sung.
There will be a single chord intro to both.
4) The Lamb of God will be sung in Latin,
“Agnus Dei”
This is found in the Music Issue.

Almsgiving in Lent
During the Lenten Season we are asked to
pray, fast and give alms.
It is a perfect time for us to pray for those in
need—whether it is for their material,
emotional or spiritual need.
And when you practice fasting and abstinence
during these forty days, please remember those
of our neighbors who are hungry, and consider
sharing your gifts with them.
One way to do this is by making a gift to the
Catholic Ministries Appeal, which supports
programs that help to feed people in our
community each year through Catholic
Charities and our Parishes
For more information about the Catholic
Ministries Appeal, please visit
www.CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org
or call 516-379-5210 ext. 2.
There are also materials available at the
back of the Church for you to review.

Sunday Night Adoration
Every Sunday during Lent
there will be Exposition of the
Blessed Sacrament from 7:00 to
8:00 PM in the church.
Exposition is for adoration,
quiet time with the Lord. Before your
hectic week begins, come and spend some
time alone with the Lord. Jesus frequently
brought his apostles away to pray with
Him. He invites you to be with Him in
quiet prayer if not for the hour at least for
a few minutes. The hour will conclude
with a brief Night Prayer and
Benediction.
Reminder:
All Fridays of Lent are days of
Abstinence from meat. This obligation
includes everyone who has reached their
14th birthday (no upper limit).
Easter Mass Remembrance
The Masses on Easter Sunday will be celebrated for the intentions of those enrolled
in the Spiritual Bouquet of Masses. In your
monthly set of envelopes there is an envelope for Easter Mass Remembrances.
Please be sure to put the names of those to
be remembered (living or deceased), on the
envelope and return it with your donation,
in the collection basket, or bring it to the
rectory office.

Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more
important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live
in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance
of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They
are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.Your almsgiving in the
St. Vincent de Paul poor box will help the poor to
celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.
If you are in need of assistance or would like information about joining or contributing to the Society, please call
516-473-9562. Leave a message and a phone number. A
member will return your call as soon as possible. You may
visit our website at www.svdprvc.org. Please remember the
Poor Boxes at the exits of the church. They are the Bread

HANDICAPPED ENCOUNTER CHRIST
A time for giving birth

A time for tears
A time for healing
“TOUCHED BY GRACE”
An Invitation
How has God been moving in your life? What
are the moments when you have felt touched by the
grace of the Holy Spirit within you and around you?
Certainly, many of us have had profound
experiences of God’s grace filling us with awe and
wonder that He could touch us so deeply.
News Flash!!! Those moments are not meant for
us to keep to ourselves but to share with others so that
they, too, might reap the rewards of God’s grace. What a
better way to nourish us as a community of faith, the
Body of Christ, than to witness God’s love in action in
the hearts of His people.
To that end, we are inviting you to submit your
testimony of how you have been touched by the grace of
God. Each week, we will print one story in our parish
bulletin in a column entitled “Touched by Grace.” (200 350 words.)
If you would like to participate or have any
questions, please e-mail me at [email protected] or
deliver to the rectory.
Together, let us build the Kingdom of God on
earth with the witness of our faith.
May the joy of the Lord be with you,
Kathy Wetzel

prometida. En los tres Evangelios sinópticos la
Transfiguración es reservada solo para Pedro,
Santiago y Juan. El momento culmínate es cuando la
voz del Padre dice: “Este es mi Hijo amado;
tienen a veces sentido! El tiempo de Cuaresma nos
invita a ver a qué cosas estamos apegados y ver hasta
dónde podemos renunciar a ellas.
