COOL, IT’S HOT
New Delhi, Feb 25 (PTI):
Government today said it is ready
for a discussion into the alleged stealing of secret official documents from
ministries like Petroleum for peddling
to corporates.
Raising the issue as soon as Rajya Sabha met for the day, Naresh
Agarwal (SP) said official papers from
several ministries were being leaked
to corporates and the government
has so far arrested only junior level
officials while saving big people.
To this, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi
said the government was ready for
discussion on any issue including the
one raised by Agarwal.

New Delhi, Feb 25 (PTI):
A day after registration of FIR
against him in a recruitment scam, the
Centre has asked Madhya Pradesh
Governor Ram Naresh Yadav to quit
from the post.
The Home Ministry has conveyed its
decision in this regard to the Governor
as he has been named in the case,
official sources said, adding that his
position has become untenable in
view of the FIR.
‘A report has been sought from the
state government and Governor’s
office on the entire matter,’ they said.
However, when contacted, Raj Bhawan spokesperson said in Bhopal,
‘There is no communication in this
regard from Delhi.’
Yadav was named in an FIR registered yesterday by Special Task
Force (STF) probing the multi-crore
Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board or Vyapam scam under
various sections of IPC, including 420
for cheating.
Yadav had allegedly recommended
the names of five candidates for recruitment as forest guards to the top
officials of MPPEB which conducted
the examination.
The registration of FIR comes following a hearing in the matter in the
Madhya Pradesh High Court on 20
February when a division bench comprising Chief Justice A M Khanwilkar
and Justice Alok Aradhe had said,
‘the STF is free to proceed against
the high dignitary’.
The MPPEB scam is a massive
admission and recruitment scandal
involving politicians and some senior
and influential state government officials and the Governor’s role in it had
come under the scanner since the
arrest of his Officer on Special Duty
(OSD) Dhanraj Yadav in MPPEB’s
Pre-Medical Test (PMT).

European giant-killers Ireland in
their pool B ODI cricket match

the toss, the Irish kept it tight for
most part of the match and had
the UAE tied up in knots before

17 girls hospitalised
for food poisoning
Rajahmundry, Feb 25 (PTI):
At least 17 girls lodged at a government-run SC/ST hostel here in
East Godavari district of Andhra
Pradesh have been hospitalised
for suspected food poisoning after
eating contaminated food, police
said today.
The girls, all studying in Class X,
were rushed to the Rajahmundry
Government General hospital
for treatment last night after they
began vomiting and complained of
loose motions and giddiness post
dinner, they said.
Soon after the incident, Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation
Chairman Rajani Sesha Sai visited
the hospital to check on the victims
and directed health officials to
take all measures for their speedy
recovery.
According to hospital sources, the
condition of the girls is stable now.
Police have collected food samples from the hostel in Devichowk
area and investigations are on.
However, the Irish kept a tight leash
on the scoring rate for most part of the
innings before Anwar helped the side
break the shackles in the company
of Javed.
Anwar, however, was the most outstanding performer of the day with a
craftily-paced knock, which rescued
his team and also booked his place
in the record books.
The veteran, who has modelled his
technique on Indian legend Rahul
Dravid, had two ODI fifties under
his belt before today’s eye-catching
effort.
Anwar’s knock was studded with
10 fours and a six and bettered the
previous UAE best of 85. His 83ball stay on the crease was ended
by Max Sorenson in the 49th over
when he induced an edge from the
batsman, which was safely caught
by wicketkeeper Gary Wilson.
Javed, on the other hand,
smashed five fours during his
entertaining innings which played
a huge role in helping UAE break
free. The duo stitched together
a partnership of 107 runs for the
seventh wicket.
Among the bowlers, Sorenson
(2/60), Alex Cusack (2/54), Paul
Stirling (2/27) and Kevin O’Brien
(2/61) shared the spoils.

q Cops taking all steps to create awareness on safe motoring
SHWETA V
Chennai, Feb 25:
There have been umpteen
number of awareness campaigns
on road safety, but mishaps,
minor and major continue to
be reported on the city’s roads.
While the traffic police has initiated steps to curb drunk driving
and has been able to control it to
a great extent, rash driving/riding
and ‘races’ continue to lead to
accidents.
According to statistics, Chennai
topped with regard to the number
of fatal accidents (1,411) in 2014,
higher than cities including Delhi
and Bangalore. Police offi cials
said that the numbers are down
but there is a perception that rash
lorry drivers and drunk driving result in a major chunk of fatalities.
That may be true to an extent
but many forget that speeding
motorists contribute to the rising
number of fatalities.

NT Bureau
Chennai, Feb 25:
Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited and
APICON 2015 (70th Annual Conference of Association of Physicians
of India) broke the Guinness World
RecordTM for making the largest human image of a heart in India recently.
According to a press release, to
create more awareness about heart
disease in India, Ranbaxy & APICON
assembled 982 people (consisting of
doctors and Ranbaxy employees) to
form a human heart. The formation
of the human heart was achieved in
1 hour and 15 minutes.
The participants wore T-shirts and
caps of distinct colours to bring out
the correct anatomical representation of the central body organ. The
creation beat the world record for
the largest image of a human organ
ever formed by a group of humans
assembled together. The earlier
record was set on 20 February, 2014,
in Liverpool, UK, when 687 people

Task force to set

q ‘Only few centres treat patients affected
with Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders’
NT Bureau
Chennai, Feb 25:
Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders (PID) are as common as
childhood leukemia and lymphoma
combined, yet very few of us know
about it, said Professor at University
of California, Irvine, Sudhir Gupta.
Speaking at the third International
Conference on Primary Immunodeficiency (ICPID) organised jointly by
the Foundation for Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases (FPID) and
Indian Society for Primary Immune
deficiency Diseases (ISPID) here
on Monday, he said, ‘Recognising
different clinical manifestations of
PID is the first most important step.
We are embarking on a project of
prenatal and neonatal screening of
PIDs and have created a task force
for establishing Indian guidelines.’
In India, PID remains under-recognised largely due to low awareness
of clinicians and lack of centers with
comprehensive flow cytometric and
molecular test capabilities. Only a few
centers in India have such advanced
diagnostic facilities and capability to
utilise them for diagnosis and care of
patients with PID, he said.
Deputy Director, NIIH Mumbai, Dr

this conference we tried to highlight

anywhere and anytime.’
He also said, ‘It is acceptable

Manisha added that with support of

workshops aimed to train the faculty
members and flow cytometry technicians on flow cytometry assays for
diagnosis of PID.
Primary immunodeficiency disorders (PIDs) are a heterogeneous
group of inherited disorders that
affect different components of the
immune system. Based upon the
incidence of PID in other countries
of 1 in 1,000, it is estimated that the
number of PID patients in India is at
least one million. This number, however, appears to be an underestimate
due to lack of awareness about PID,
and the length of time it takes for
diagnosing PID.

Big boost
hough there were opposition in some quarters for the visit
of US President Barack Obama to India recently, it is an
undeniable fact that it provided an opportunity to strengthen bilateral
relationship between the two countries.
Now the US’s announcement that it is willing to work together
with Indian government has brought cheer to many.
There is an opportunity for us to try to advance the interest of
both our countries by working together and by coordinating our
efforts. And the (US) President is certainly committed to that. In part
because of the substantial economic benefits that could be enjoyed
by the American people, America has said.
It is also said that Obama does believe that, as Indian consumers
have the opportunity to buy American goods, that could be good
for the Indian economy, as well. The President spent a lot of time
with Prime Minister Modi. They spent a lot of time talking about
some of these economic issues.
And Obama had the opportunity to sit down at a round table with
corporate bosses of India and talk about some of the challenges
that they face as they try to do more business together in a way that
benefits the economies and job creation in both countries.
Obama arrived on a three-day visit to India on 24 January. In his
meeting with Modi, the two leaders decided to resume talks on
bilateral investment treaty.
Obama has said that Beijing need not feel threatened by his
country’s growing relations with India even as he warned that
China’s growth shouldn’t be at the expense of its neighbours.
In an interview, Obama also cautioned China against bullying
small countries like Vietnam or the Philippines on maritime issues.
I was surprised when I heard that the Chinese government had put
out these statements... China doesn’t need to be threatened because
we have good relations with India, Obama said in his first comments
on China’s reaction to his unprecedented second Presidential visit
to India.
China had last year warned India against meddling in its dispute
with Vietnam over islands in the South China Sea. It claims almost
all of the South China Sea, while Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines,
Taiwan and Vietnam contests the Chinese claims on the resourcerich region.

Once the jewel-encrusted playthings of the Russian royal family, the

Ninety nine years since Faberge

The ‘Faberge Pearl Egg’

according to the jeweller.
Several Gulf nations have a long

For the past several days, Vinayagam Street in Mambalam has been in

In the prevailing dark conditions, woman residents are scared to venture

Police forcibly dragged the opposition leader into the court in the

Nasheed told the court that his

His shirt buttons were missing

Japanese researchers have found
that a substance in black tea may
be effective for treating osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to
become weak
and brittle. The
team, including Keizo Nishikawa, assistant

Osaka University, found that
theaflavin-3, or TF-3, a substance in

osteoclasts, cells that destroy bone
tissues. In a study published in the

said that after TF-3 was administered
to mice suffering from osteoporosis,
their bone volume recovered to levels
similar to those of normal mice.
If the experimental conditions are
applied to humans, however, a person weighing 60 kg would need to

The discovery may pave the way for

Mystery money

ABU DHABI:
While many souls in this world, in
their flights of imaginations, might
have wished for lots of moolah to just
rain on them someday, it turned out to
be astonishingly true for some people
in Dubai on Feb 11 when thousands
of banknotes were seen flying hither
and thither on a stormy afternoon.
According to local and international
news reports, the amazing money
rain happened over a fortnight ago
in Dubai as stormy winds scattered
several 500 UAE Dirham notes from
an unknown source on a road busy
with plying motor vehicles. The traffic
came to a halt at the sight of ‘cash
in the air’.
Some of the onlookers took out their
cell phones to film the unbelievable
money rain and a video of the same
has gone viral on the social media.
Stunned commuters pulled over
their cars and were seen rushing to
lay their hands on cash strewn on
the road.
According to a report in the Daily
Mail, the notes blowing through the
city could add up to cash worth more
than half a million pounds.
So far, officials have no explanation
to give as to what was the source of
the ‘raining money’.

stages before implementation, 9 are
ready to be bid out and 16 are at various stages of the bidding process,’
according to a DIPP paper -- Investment Opportunities in India.
The value of roadways and bridge infrastructure in India is expected to grow
at a CAGR of 17.4 per cent between
2012-17, to reach USD 10 billion.
‘The PPP model will continue to be
the favoured way of executing the
remaining NHDP phases,’ the paper
said. There has been an unprecedented increase in cargo handling capacity
from 575 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT)
in 2009 to 800 MMT in February 2014.
As part of the government’s efforts to
actively focus on development and
upgradation of capacities across all
coastal states projects in shipping for
the next few years worth USD 9 billion
will be implemented.
In the power sector four thermal
power projects with installed capacity
of more than 8,200 MW will be out for
bidding in 2015-16.

Panagariya for strategic
planning with long term goals
New Delhi, Feb 25 (PTI):
India is likely to switch over
to strategic planning, under
which efforts would be made
to achieve long-term goals,
from traditional five-year
planning system, NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind
Panagariya said yesterday.
‘As per the Cabinet Resolution which created NITI
Aayog, strategic planning will

keeping in mind five-year
targets rather we will think
with a horizon of 7-8 years,’
Panagariya said in an interview to Doordarshan.
Elaborating further he

He said that India will

‘once we will decide that

Referring to recommendations of the 14th Finance
Commission to raise states’
share in union taxes from
32 per cent to 42 per cent,
Panagariya said that this
will increase the amount
of untied funds which go
to them.
‘States will get untied
money that will be 42 per

will change as rather than
emphasising that we give

their money,’ he said.
He was of the view that
more untied money in
hands of states would enable them to prioritise their
spending. However, he added that the onus of delivery
would also be on them and
they would loose elections if
they would not perform.

Doha, Feb 25:
Sixth-seeded Andrea Petkovic advanced to the second round of the
Qatar Open with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2
win over Belgian qualifier Kirsten
Flipkens on Tuesday.
Flipkens, who beat Petkovic in
the second round at New Haven
last August, showed a good touch

the second as Petkovic opened up
a 4-0 lead.
The 10th-ranked Petkovic was in
total control of the third set, with
the German winning four games in
a row to seal the contest.
‘Kirsten isn’t a great match up for
me. I always struggle against her,’
Petkovic said. ‘She played really

Carla Suarez Navarro advanced
after fellow Spaniard Garbine Muguruza retired due to a viral illness,

FIFA group calls
for December
WC in Qatar
Doha, Feb 25 (AFP):
A FIFA World Cup taskforce called
for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to
be shortened and held in NovemberDecember to avoid scorching summer
temperatures.
A tournament from the end of November to the end of December was the
most viable period for the World Cup,
the taskforce decided, according to a
FIFA statement.
A source later told AFP that the dates
proposed would see the tournament
begin on November 26 with the final
held on December 23.
A final decision will be made by the
FIFA executive committee at their
meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, on
March 19 and looks likely to be approved despite Europe’s top clubs
stressing their opposition.
If the move goes ahead, it will be
the first time the World Cup has been
played in these months and away from
its traditional northern hemisphere
summer format. There is one solution,
November-December, said FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke after a
meeting of the taskforce in Doha.
Valcke said the group touched on
all the options, including considering
holding the World Cup in January and
February 2023.

Chigumbura remained optimistic

Struggling Younis
denies retirement tweet
Brisbane, Feb 25 (AFP):
Out of form senior Pakistan batsman Younis Khan
denied on Wednesday tweeting a plan to
retire from one-day internationals after
the ongoing World Cup, saying he was
working hard to come good for his
team.
A tweet from a supposedly official
Younis account on Tuesday said he
was going to retire from white-ball
cricket after the World Cup and continue to play Tests.
However, Younis insisted he did not
have a Twitter account of his own.
I have no Twitter account and it’s
(the story about his retirement)
fake,’ Younis told AFP on
Wednesday.
‘I am working hard to come
good in batting and have
not decided anything like
that.’
Younis has been a subject of severe criticism
from former Pakistan
players after scores
of six and nought in Pakistan’s defeats in their first two
matches of the World Cup. He was asked to open the
innings in Pakistan’s first match against arch-rivals
India in Adelaide, a promotion which backfired.
Since arriving on the New Zealand tour last
month, the 37-year-old has managed just 78
runs in eight matches, including four warm-up
games and two one-day internationals prior
to the World Cup.
Pakistan next play Zimbabwe in a Pool B
fixture in Brisbane on 1 March, a game
they must win
to harbour realistic hopes of
qualifying for the
quarterfinals.

Moin to return home: PCB
Karachi, Feb 25 (PTI):
Chief selector, Moin Khan has been
ordered to return home immediately
from Australia by the Pakistan Cricket
Board (PCB) in the aftermath of the
controversy generated over his visit
to a Casino in Christchurch.
PCB chairman, Shaharyar Khan
told reporters in Lahore that the board
after investigating the matter had
decided to call Moin back.
We asked him for an explanation
and he said he had gone to have
dinner at the Casino. But we feel his
action was inappropriate at a time
when the Pakistan team is struggling
in the World Cup, Khan said.
We don’t want to be judgmental
but being a chief selector and senior member of the touring squad
he should have been careful and
we don’t think his returning home
will have any effect on the team’s
performances,’ he said.
Moin went to a casino at a time
when the team is struggling and
the whole nation is disappointed,
Khan said.
Media reports in Pakistan
have said that Moin, a former
test captain, had visited a
casino on the night of the
match against the West
Indies in which Pakistan
was hammered by 150 runs,
their worst ever defeat in a
World Cup.
The issue has been played up by
some channels in view of the poor
performances of the Pakistan team.
Watson confronts
World Cup ‘crunch time’
Auckland, Feb 25 (AFP):
Shane Watson admitted he was
facing crunch time with the bat as he
battled to stay in Australia’s side ahead
of their World Cup clash with co-hosts
New Zealand.
In the midst of Australia’s thumping
111-run opening pool win over England
in Melbourne, all-rounder Watson was
dismissed by paceman Stuart Broad for
a golden duck.
While it was generally acknowledged
he had received a good delivery, his exit reignited the
long-running debate about
Watson’s worth to Australia,
with many observers contending he is not a good
enough batsman or bowler
to hold down a place in
the side.
The 33-year-old’s cause was not
helped when Australia’s second Pool
A game against Brisbane last weekend
was washed out without a ball bowled
and Watson’s World Cup could now
depend on how he performs against
New Zealand at Auckland’s Eden Park
on Saturday -- if selected.
It’s crunch time for me to score runs
in general, Watson said Wednesday,
when asked if he needed a score
to keep his place in the side. It was
disappointing not to get through that
first ball, said Watson of his Melbourne
dismissal.
But it’s important for me to score runs
anytime. It’s up to the selectors in the
end, whether they see fit for me to play,
he added. ‘I have been involved in a
number of World Cups and I know what
to expect. But I’m doing everything I
possibly can. I just want to score runs
and I know it doesn’t always go exactly
to plan as well.’
Prior to the World Cup, Watson
scored 81 in the Sydney Test against
India last month before a run of modest
one-day contributions --16, 41, 22 and
34 prior to his Melbourne duck.
Luiz Suarez scores a double
Paris, Feb 25 (AFP):
Luis Suarez scored a double on
his return to England for the first
time since a big money move last
summer as Barcelona secured a
2-1 win over Manchester City in
their Champions League last 16
first leg clash.
The Uruguayan -- who moved to
Barcelona from Liverpool -- struck
twice in the first-half yesterday to
give his side the upper hand heading towards the second leg at the
Nou Camp next month.
Sergio Aguero grabbed a goal for
City -- though the hosts were soon
afterwards reduced to 10 men when
Gael Clichy was sent off -- and Joe
Hart kept City in it with a last minute
penalty save from Lionel Messi.
It leaves City with a glimmer of hope
of becoming the first side since Liverpool in 2007 of preventing Barcelona
from reaching the last eight.
Suarez, who took his tally to nine
goals for Barcelona in 23 appearances in all competitions, admitted
Hart’s save had kept the tie alive.
I think that is a positive thing for
them, said Suarez, whose career at
Barcelona started belatedly as he

ian defender Giorgio Chiellini in last
year’s World Cup. If it had gone in it
would have been a different scenario.
But at 2-1 there’s a chance for
them.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini,
whose side went out to Barcelona at
the same stage last year, confessed
his side had only started to play in
the second period.
We conceded an early goal and
played very bad. In the second half
we did what we talked about before
the game, said Pellegrini.
We have a chance. We must try to
do it there in the next game.
The other tie of the night saw
Juventus beat Borussia Dortmund
2-1 in Turin, in the fi rst meeting
between the two sides since the
German outfit beat them in the 1997
Champions League final.
Chiellini was at fault for Dortmund’s equaliser -- after Carlos
Tevez had opened the scoring for
the hosts -- as he slipped when in
possession and Marco Reus needed no second invitation to score.
We needed to be strong mentally
after that happened, said Juventus
coach Massimiliano Allegri about
the tying goal.
The players responded accordingly as impressive Spaniard Alvaro
Morata restored Juve’s advantage
shortly before the half-time break.
The biggest worry for Juventus will
be the injury to iconic playmaker
Andrea Pirlo after he had to go off
in the first-half.
We have passed an important
test, and I am pleased with this
result against a really good team,
said Allegri.
‘The result is a fair one, but it could
have been by a wider margin because we created several chances,
especially in the second half when
we played really well.’
Hiss Dortmund counterpart Jurgen
Klopp gracioulsy admitted Juventus
had deserved the victory.
They were good at closing us down
and not allowing us to play our kind
of game. On the goals we conceded,
it was down to errors of positioning,’
said Klopp.
‘These are problems we have to
rectify but nothing has been lost.
There’s still everything to play for
at Dortmund.’

STICKING TO THE BILL
q All about Land Acquisition Amendment Act
For and against
A lot of ruckus is being created not just in Parliament but also in many
parts of the country over the Land Acquisition Amendment Act, 2015.
Amid protests, the government on Tuesday introduced the Land Acquisition Bill in the Lok Sabha.
With both opposition and ruling parties equally holding their views tight
on the Bill, it is time to look into it.

VITAL CHANGES
l
l
It can be recalled that the UPA Act allowed acquisition of land for infrastructure projects excluding
private hospitals, private educational institutions
and private hotels. But the current proposal of the
NDA government includes Private entrepreneurship.
The mandatory prior consent of 80 per cent (for
private projects) or 70 per cent (for PPP projects)
observed in the 2013 Land acquisition, resettlement & rehabilitation act is likely to be amended
in the current law. Five eminent sectors- National
security, defence, rural infrastructure including
electrification, industrial corridors and housing for
the poor will be exempted from the consent.
l
The UPA Act provisioned that the land will go
back to the original owners if it is not utilised for
five years. The NDA Act now removes the five
year period and replaces it with ‘a period specified for setting up of any project or for five years,
whichever is later.’ This could escalate the cases
of land grabbing.

Hesson plays down
Oz-Kiwis hype
Auckland, Feb 25 (AFP):
New Zealand coach Mike
Hesson Wednesday played
down the hype surrounding
the explosive World Cup
showdown between the cohosts, saying it will be treated
as just another round-robin
encounter.
But it will be easier said
than done for both teams as
come Saturday the intensity
on and off the field will be
high at a packed-out Eden
Park crammed to its 40,000
capacity. New Zealand are
perched at the top of Pool A
with three wins from as many
games while Australia have
one win in two matches, with
their second against Bangladesh abandoned due to rain
in Brisbane last weekend.
The team which wins Saturday’s game will be in pole
position to finish on top of
the group and face a relatively easier opponent in the
quarter-finals, a prospect
which adds another twist to
Saturday’s tussle.
But Hesson doesn’t buy
into the hype. ‘Just another one of the round robin
games and obviously it’s
going to be a good one,’ said
Hesson after a Black Caps
training session held under
the warm Auckland sun.
‘We know it’s going to be
a great contest, we haven’t
played Australia a lot in recent times but it’s an important game for us and
important for the group so we
will treat it as the other ones.’
Hesson, however, admitted it will be a pressure occasion. ‘The pressure is playing
a side ranked No 1 and
who have won four World
Cups. They’re a good side.
There’s two good sides playing pretty well at the
moment so I don’t
think (favouritism)
really adds a lot to it.’
Hesson refused to
accept the Australia
game will be first
‘real’ test for Black Caps. ‘We
probably don’t look at it quite
that way. Sri Lanka was a
huge test for us, the England
game as well,’ said Hesson
of the first two games his
team played in the World
Cup.
The parties that opposed the ordinance
in the Upper House of Parliament included
the Congress, the Left parties, Samajwadi
Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Janata Dal
(United) and Trinamool Congress, apart
from BJP ally Shiv Sena.
SP leader Ramgopal Yadav asked the
government to find a solution by talking
to all the parties, adding that farmers’
interests should be protected while development activities are being implemented.
Claiming the legislation will benefit farmers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted at the BJP Parliamentary meet that
there was no going back on the changes.
In defence of the changes to the Act,
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley observed in
the Rajya Sabha that the ordinance has a
provision for quadrupling the compensation to farmers even in the 13 legislations
that were kept out of the earlier land law
passed during the UPA rule.
The BJP has pointed out that since the
compensation remains high, farmers
would get a fair value for their land.
BACKGROUND
The Land Acquisition Act of 1894 was created with the purpose
of facilitating acquisition by the government of privately held land
for public purposes.
It is not necessary that all the acquisition has to be initiated by
the government alone. Local authorities, societies registered under the societies registration act, 1860 and co-operative societies
established under the co-operative societies act can also acquire
the land for developmental activities through the government.
Land Acquisition Act, 2013:
After numerous protests by many social activists, the UPA government amended the 120-year old act and included the aspect
of providing fair compensation to the landholders.
According to the act, fair compensation will be provided to the
affected families whose land has been acquired or proposed to
be acquired or are affected by such acquisition.

India’s allround
show impresses Lara
Dhoni-Kohli
bonhomie
PERTH:
There were lot of speculations about Mahendra Singh
Dhoni-Virat Kohli relationship but if you walked in at
the Hotel Hyatt today afternoon, you could say that
all those were just rumours. As one entered the hotel
porch, one could see the Indian captain and his deputy
engrossed in a chat like long lost friends.
Even from a handshaking distance, it was difficult to
hear what they were speaking. While Kohli was in his
shorts and white vests, the skipper looked cool as ever
in his Red tees and army green baggy pants.
The Indian captain did acknowledge the presence of
few scribes with a smile, even as Kohli had a look at
his i-pad. Once Mohammed Shami joined them, the
three left the hotel and it was lunch time, so no marks
for guessing where they headed to, as the hotel menu
was dominated mostly by oriental and Aussie cuisines
which probably did not suit the Indian taste buds.
NEW DELHI:
West Indies batting legend Brian Lara is mighty
impressed with India’s allround showing in their
first two cricket World Cup
matches and feels Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men
need to keep up their good
work in all three departments of the game if they
intend to defend the title.
India defeated arch-rivals
Pakistan by 76 runs in their
tournament opener before
registering an emphatic
130-win over tournament
favourites South Africa in
their second outing to be
atop Group B at the moment.
And like others, Lara too
feels India in all likelihood
will go as table toppers into
the next round.
‘Most definitely (India
likely to top Group B). India
is playing great cricket. The
combination of their efforts

cricketers have grown out
of that and I believe that’s
simply because of what
Sachin Tendulkar has done
to Indian cricket in terms
of showing the fight and
strength needed to play on
any surface.
The players are now following in his footsteps. The
likes of (Ajinkya) Rahane,
(Shikhar) Dhawan, (Virat)
Kohli and skipper Dhoni
all these guys are now accustomed to play in these
tough conditions, bouncy
pitches and I expect the
Indian team to continue
the way they are playing at
present, Lara said.
