The Book of Ecclesiastes
Chapter 3
tells us:
March 1, 2015
THE SECOND SUNDAY
OF
LENT
First Reading:
Genesis 22:1-18
God ordered Abraham to take his
beloved only son to Moriah and offer
him as a sacrifice. Abraham built an
altar and took out a knife to sacrifice
his son Isaac. But God called out to
him and told him of blessings that
would be bestowed on him and his
descendants because he had been
willing to do what God had asked.
Second Reading:
Romans 8:31-34
Paul reminds the people that God did
not spare His only Son, but gave Him
up for the sake of all people. This
proves God views us all as His
children, and that no person can harm
or condemn us because God will
protect us.
Gospel:
Mark 9:2-10
Jesus led Peter, James and John up a
high mountain, where he conversed
with Elijah and Moses. Voice proclaimed “This is my Son, my beloved.
Listen to Him.” Then Jesus was
alone and warned them not to tell
anyone what they had seen un l He
had risen from the dead.
“There is an appointed time for
every thing and a time for every
affair under the heavens”.

Seeking Spiritual Pathways
Our theme will be:
Finding God in
Disorder and Imperfection
Enter into the stories of Jesus’
healing ministry to gain a deeper

within and around us. Notice

compassion, through chaos,
brought about God’s reign.
Practice a new and different

more freedom. Prayerfully connect to the deep tide of contentment that flows beneath all
circumstances in life.

THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
A Lenten Liturgical Guide to Living Your Best Life: Part Two - Roger Pisani
Jesus took Peter, James, and John...and he was transfigured before them…
Transfigura on: Listening to and Coopera ng with Heaven
Why did Jesus take Peter, James and John with him? Because they were closest to him? Maybe they
were, but that's not the point if we work through this story within Mark's unique spiritual eyes.
In Mark's Gospel account, experiencing Jesus goes like this: you encounter him, you receive his message
of God's love, you are healed or change your outlook on life for the be er, and you go out to preach and
heal like him. If Jesus keeps people close to him in Mark's Gospel account, it's because he knows they
need more help. Such is the case with these three guys. Jesus loves them and knows them. He knows
they're not yet awakened to his iden ty or their own. This mountaintop experience is an a empt to help
them "get it".
In the Scriptures, mountains are places where we receive revela on and mission from God. In the presence of the disciples, Jesus is transfigured. His clothes (a symbol of humanity) become brighter (a symbol
of divinity) than they could by human technology. This image communicates that the divine power is
working in the ordinary human condi on. It reveals Jesus' iden ty as beloved of God and experience of
divine love. It also points out that the disciples (and all people) have a share in that iden ty and mission.
Sadly, they don't understand - they get caught in the wonder of the sign and simply want to worship Jesus. That's one reason why we have this story: so we might benefit from their misunderstanding. They
shouldn't be judged, though: are we any different?
The divine voice then tells them what they need to do: listen to him. It's not about following the Law
(symbolized by Moses) or the prophets (symbolized by Elijah). Those venerable tradi ons are important,
because they point to something deeper that is being missed: humans can bring God's love to one another. In Jesus human and divine are wed. He is the one to follow. Listen to him. Do what he tells you.
For this week:
Listen in prayer: how might Jesus be invi ng you to see your own reality of the radiance of God present in
you?
Consider how in your normal daily life you could bring Good News to people: let them know they ma er
in the world; that their needs ma er; that they too have a mission. No need for words…let simple, loving
deeds do the talking.
Pre y soon, people are going to need sunglasses around you.
