MILO FIRE & RESCUE RECEIVES DEFIBRILLATOR - Mayo Regional Hospital President & CEO Marie Vienneau recently presented an Automated External Defibrillator unit to Milo Fire & Rescue Fire

Materials Management and the co-chair of Mayo’s Service Excellence Committee. The Service Excellence
Committee is committed to community outreach and support. An automated external defibrillator (AED)
is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to
restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). AEDs make it possible
for more people to respond to a medical emergency where defibrillation is required. Purchase of the AED
was made possible by the Dennis Allen Memorial Golf Tournament Fund. The fund was named in honor
of Dennis Allen who died suddenly in 2008 from a heart attack. Allen was the Chief Financial Officer at
Mayo Regional Hospital for many years.

EAST SANGERVILLE GRANGE WELCOMES BACK THE PRESS
GANG - The Press Gang will play at the East Sangerville Grange
on Saturday, March 7 at 7 p.m. It has been four years since the Portland-based Press Gang last played at the East Sangerville Grange
Coffee House. This high-energy trio delivers traditional tunes from
Ireland, Quebec, Appalachia, Scotland and New England with real
zest – and a fair bit of humor. The group is known for its “musical
sense of adventure” and for shows that are always spontaneous and
fresh. Since their first appearance at the Grange, The Press Gang
released its second CD and has expanded its tour circuit to include
prominent venues in Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont. Tickets
will be available at the door or two weeks in advance at Bob’s Home

“In The Blood”
on March 6
DOVER-FOXCROFT- The Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft announces a one time performance of In The Blood, a live docu-exhibit
illustrating the life, skills, & character of the turn-of-the-century
Maine lumbermen & river drivers. In The Blood will be performed at
the Center Theatre on Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m.
“We brought Sumner McKane and his other piece, The Maine Frontier, to the Center Theatre last year,” says Executive Director Angela
Bonacasa, “and the response was so overwhelming that we had to
bring In The Blood here as well. It isn’t often that we are fortunate
to have access to an artist with such a strong connection to Maine
history.”
In The Blood uses the most captivating rare films and photos that
Maine’s archives have to offer. After over 3 years of research, combing libraries, museums, historical societies and archives, these films
and photographs have been handpicked with careful consideration.
By taking such steps as creating 3D images out of 19th century photographs and editing historic footage and interviews to be clear and
audible for all audiences, In The Blood has broad appeal and is an
engrossing exhibition of film, music and history.
The musical score for In The Blood was composed to reflect the
moods and environment of the films, photos, and stories. Based in composer Sumner McKane’s own brand of ambient Americana, there are
elements of ethereal soundscapes and textures, country-blues, post
rock, hopeful melancholia, and traditional lumbermen’s melodies- deriving from celtic and english folk songs. Melodic electric guitar and
bass join textured sequences and manipulated loops of percussion- of
which 80% were sampled from actual woods sounds (leaves rustling,
axes, logs rolling, trees creaking, and walking in snow).
General Admission tickets to In The Blood are $10, and are $8 for
advance tickets, Seniors, Students, and Center Theatre members.

GFWC Miosac sponsors Sebec Lake “Ice-Out ...”
SEBEC - The GFWC Miosac Club is conducting its 2015 Sebec lake Ice-Out Contest. Tickets may be
purchased from any Club member from now through March 31.
Monies raised will be used to maintain a variety of Club projects in the Dover-Foxcroft area. Tickets are
available for $1 each or six for $5. The person who guesses the closest date and time the ice will go out of
the Narrows at Sebec Lake will receive a $100 check.
Ice-out dates on Sebec Lake have been recorded since May 1879. Research on the dates were released
by the Sebec Lake Fish and Game Association with the assistance of Ruth Weatherbee. In the spring of
1976, former GFWC Miosac Club member, Laura Stacy, came up with the idea of a Sebec Lake “Ice-Out”
Guessathon. It is now known as the “Ice-Out” Contest. This has become an annual event for the Club
since its inception with much anticipation from local residents. This year’s judge will be Dennis Hersey.

Guilford Christian Academy March workshop
GUILFORD - Guilford Christian Academy for Homeschoolers is offering workshops and activities for the community during the month
of March. Guilford Christian Academy has been encouraging and
strengthening homeschoolers in Maine for over a decade now and
has recently taken out a lease on office space where they can provide
even more for the homeschoolers and local community. They have
been holding classes and workshops on sewing, knitting, crocheting,
American Sign Language, and much more. Call Trisha at 717-7619
if you would like to stop by and learn more about homeschooling or
have an idea for a workshop or class that you may be willing to offer.
They will start off with a Let’s Knit Socks Workshop. Trisha will
show participants how to make socks over the course of 4 weeks.
There are two patterns to choose from ranging from beginner to intermediate. Young and old are invited to attend. You do not have to be a
homeschooler to join. The workshop starts Wednesday March 4 from
1 - 3 p.m. Cost is $20 for the 4 weeks, you purchase your preferred
fiber yarn and needles. Sign up online.
Roller skating at the Dexter Rec. Dept every 4 Monday of the month

“Gasland 2” movie should spark discussion

DEXTER - Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition (DDATT) will
sponsor the two-hour long film “Gasland 2” at the Abbott Memorial
Library in Dexter at 6 p.m. on March 6 as part of its ongoing First
Friday free movie sessions, followed by vibrant public discussion.
Over the past decade there has been a rush for oil and natural
gas across America using the controversial drilling method of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”. The new techniques, technologies, and
chemicals used are more intensive and riskier than conventional oil
and gas drilling.
“Gasland 2” argues that the gas industry is using its wealth and
power to influence government policy on fracking, while buying the
silence of countless American homeowners forced to move out of their
longtime homes because their water has become too polluted to drink.
Even though Maine itself does not sit above natural gas fields, the
implications of fracking elsewhere in the Northeast and our continued dependence on all forms of fossil fuel use are important to Central Maine residents.
DDATT’s mission is to inform ourselves on how our energy choices affect our environmental, political, and economic lives. “Gasland

MILO - Penquis Valley High School Teacher and Key Club Advisor Kathy Doyon and a few of her Key
Club members, Morgan, Jordan, Krista, Ryan, and Jacob, made a presentation to their sponsoring Kiwanis club in Milo on Wednesday, February 11. Despite the early hour of 6:30 a.m., these bright-eyed Key Club
members shared a slide show and detailed information about the club’s recent and ongoing activities in
their community of Milo-Brownville, providing Key Club members with opportunities to provide service,
build character, and develop leadership skills.
Key Club President Ryan reported the club has 28 members on their roster and described their activities since the beginning of the year. Their activities included:
• Helping Foxcroft Academy raise funding for the Hospice Hospital
• Sponsoring a Trunk or Treat Halloween event for kids who needed a safe place to trick or treat and
participated in Trick or Treat for UNICEF
• Helping the Red Cross with a blood drive by assisting with registration, the canteen, and guiding
donors to seats
• Raised money for Kiwanis International Eliminate Project to eliminate maternal and neonatal
tetanus
• Helped with the Haunted Hay Ride sponsored by the Milo Recreation Committee
• Participated in local runs, including the Color Run, Domestic Violence Awareness Walk, and the
Reindeer Run
• Helped the Milo Elementary School with their annual Fall Frolic
• Helped Three Rivers Kiwanis|Milo-Brownville with the Veterans Day Dinner in Milo by setting
up decorated tables, waiting on tables delivering dinners and desserts, and helping with clean up
• Participated in the Welcome to My Home event in Dexter, which is a fundraiser to help the homeless. The club donated clothes, blankets, and canned food. To raise money, the students slept in a
box outside all night and had an opportunity to see life through the eyes of the less fortunate. The
event raises awareness and raises money and articles for the shelters.
• Offered pizza for sale at high school basketball games, sold DVDs of the basketball tournament,
and held a bake sale to raise funds for Key Club members to attend DECON, the District Educational Convention in Springfield Massachusetts, April 10-12

DOVER-FOXCROFT- The Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft has announced its “Arts on Film” series. “We have our
regular movie showings, which will be increasing,” says
Executive Director Angela Bonacasa, “and the Slightly OffCenter Players perform live theatre regularly throughout
the year. But there are so many other types of events that
we can’t bring to the theatre to perform live, so we are going
to bring those kinds of events to the Center Theatre electronically.”
Two companies, Specticast and ByExperience, specialize in performances by New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the
Bolshoi Ballet, concerts by internationally known artists,
and even live theatrical performances from Broadway and
London’s West End. The Theatre will be offering one programming event per month, with the possibility of increased
offerings later in the year. The first scheduled event is
“Aerosmith Rocks Donington”, scheduled for Sunday, March
8, at 4 p.m. Other planned events include the Broadway
production of “Of Mice and Men” and “Metamorphosis”, by
the Big Apple Circus.

GORHAM - Timothy Macomber, age 50, died at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough on February 12, 2015. He
fought a courageous battle with
pancreatic cancer for two years.
Tim was born September 11,
1964 in Dexter, ME to Merton
and Gloria Macomber. He is the
youngest of three children. He
graduated from Dexter Regional
HS in the class of 1983, EMCC in
the class of 1985, and Wentworth
Institute of Technology in the
class of 1988. Tim was employed
at Fairchild Semiconductor for
29 years as a software engineer
as well as global IT manager
and data architect. Tim married Tracy Lynne Cote of Portsmouth, NH in 1998. They were
blessed with 16 years of devoted
marriage. They met at Happy
Wheels in Newington, NH and
loved roller skating in NH and
all over Maine. Tim is survived
by his wife Tracy, his three loving
children Trinity Nicole age 23,
Thomas James age 15, and Trevin Cody age 9, his parents Merton
and Gloria Macomber, brothers
Gregory and Jeffrey Macomber,
father-in-law Roland Cote and
his wife Janet Morley, mother-in-
law Darla Cote, brother-in-law

“Vote No on Milo $2 Million Bond”
To the Editor:
Milo residents will vote on a $2 million Bond package at town meeting Monday, March 9th at 7pm. The
Bond provides funds to pave roads and sidewalks, make upgrades to buildings, and purchase equipment.
I will be voting NO on the bond for these reasons:
1. The town portion of my property tax has doubled since 2007. 2. Milo property will be de-valued by
30% this year to conform to State valuation. The current property tax rate of $21.30 will increase to over
$30.00. Increasing from one of the highest in the county to one of the highest rates in the State.
3. Repayment of the Bond requires a rate increase of $3.40 for a 10 year period or an equal reduction
of services.
4. Reductions considered for the first year: No longer funding the library, rec department, and the
cemetery.
5. Proposed State reductions in funding from Revenue Sharing and Excise Tax will further increase
Milo’s tax rate by approximately $7.00.
6. Milo currently has twice as much debt as carried prior to the Industrial Park purchase and the 2008
paving fiasco. The Bond will increase debt to be 10 times that earlier level.
7. Prior to 2008, paving was paid from town reserves. The 2008 paving fiasco debt will not be fully repaid until 2018.
8. Rising property taxes make it difficult for Milo’s aging population to maintain their homes; leading to
more vacant/abandoned homes, lower property values, and less property tax revenue for the town.
We need to repair roads, maintain public buildings, and replace necessary town equipment, but this
Bond is not feasible. It is too risky to undertake a 10 year $2 million commitment when our property taxes
are already so high.
Join me in voting NO on the Bond.

To the Editor:
This is in response to “the diet of lent”. First I resent anyone using the bible, Jesus or God to justify
their perverted views. Don’t you agree that more damage has been done by religious fanatics according to
their perverted religious belief than any other group or organization other than politics? When the person
who penned the letter “the diet of lent” goes out and stays in the desert and returns and accomplishes
all that Jesus is believed to have accomplished, then maybe I would listen to the prophecy of veganism.
Sadly the lent argument is checkmated by Cain and Abel. God supposedly preferred burning blood and
meat to that of burning plant and vegetable matter. The vegan, Caine, killed the omnivore, Abel, because
he was jealous of Gods acceptance of Abel’s offering and the rejection of his. Hence should all vegans be
ridiculed for their belief? Are vegans breaking with God? Are vegans a danger to non-vegans? You see how
easy it is to pervert something. I have no idea or knowledge of the eating habits of either Abel or Cain but
I believe Jesus and his prophets had a few feasts where the fatted calf and lamb was cooked to perfection.
The human being is an omnivore, meaning a human eats a variety of foods. This includes vegetables,
fruits, nuts, berries, birds, eggs, fishes, meat and milk. I didn’t make us humans this way; you will have
to take that up with a higher power.
As to animal abuse, I have no tolerance for anyone abusing animals. Slaughtering and butchering animals is neither torture nor abuse. It is the continuation of life. For people to live, animals, fish and plants
must die. That’s the way it is. Yes, plants die for your palates’ pleasure just as animals die for mine. The
old cycle goes; life gives to death as death gives to life. I did not make the cycle it just is.
The local grocery store has an ample supply of grass feed beef and wholesome nutritious milk and milk
products. They also give out mouthwatering recipes to try. So help all farmers when you visit and buy
bread (the staff of life), vegetables (for vitamins and good old fiber), meat (protein, trace minerals, fatty
acids), milk (health bone builder) and you help keep the farming economy rolling along.
Again I say to all vegans, enjoy your tofu but for me steak, rare and juicy please.

“Nutrition Panel Tells All”
To the Editor:
The U.S. Advisory Panel on Dietary Guidelines has finally mustered the courage to recommend that
Americans eat less meat and dairy products. And not just to lower our risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and obesity, but also because it slows the rate of climate changes, with its own devastating
consequences.
The 572 page report released on Thursday notes that half of all Americans have preventable dietrelated chronic diseases and that two-thirds of adults and one-third of children are overweight. It concludes that a dietary pattern higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal-based foods is more health
promoting and associated with lesser environmental impact than the current U.S. diet.
The 1977 recommendation that Americans eat less meat by the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition
and Human Needs was quashed by the meat industry, and subsequent dietary guidelines panels have
been very cautious. The 2010 dietary guidelines panel merely shoved meat and dairy off the official MyPlate icon, representing the U.S. Dietary Guidelines.
Though the experts have now told the truth, our family s health is still up to us. Fortunately, local
supermarkets offer a variety of meat and dairy-free options and the internet has lots of advice on vegan
recipes and transition tips.
