Davis named to national committee on Legislative Effectiveness MAINE – Senator Paul Davis (R-Piscataquis) has been named to the National Conference of State Legislatures’ (NCSL) Standing Committee on Legislative Effectiveness as a representative of the Maine Senate. The NCSL’s nine Standing Committees allow legislators and staff to benefit from the experiences of other states in shaping public policy, experimenting with new laws, and managing the legislative institutions. “I am pleased to be appointed to the national Legislative Effectiveness committee,” said Senator Davis. “We can always do more to ensure that the work of the people is being carried out efficiently and effectively. I look forward to learning from other states’ successes and challenges, and to sharing what we do well here in Maine with my colleagues from across the country.” Senator Davis spent 23 years as a Maine State Trooper, serving primarily in Piscataquis County. He also served six years in the Army National Guard. A member of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine Board of Directors, he is an avid hunter, fisherman, and snowmobiler. He and his wife, Patricia, live in Sangerville. They have two grown children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Living on a tight budget? No problem... This time of year, greenhouses and farmers markets are full of customers searching for seedlings and plants to brighten their home gardens and eventually fill their plates. More and more, people are expanding what they grow at home and becoming curious about new options – including fruit trees. In addition to home gardeners, market gardeners are often adding to or expanding their offerings by adding fruit trees to their farms. As many farmers will tell you, caring for fruit trees differs in many ways to caring for vegetable crops. The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) in partnership with the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) is offering a workshop that will help any fruit tree grower, large or small, experienced or new, to learn more about how to support and maintain healthy, productive fruit trees on their property. The PCSWCD will be hosting an Orcharding 101 workshop with MOFGA’s Orchard Specialist CJ Walke on Saturday, June 13th. CJ has years of experience teaching and mastering organic orcharding practices, and has worked alongside many orcharding experts including John Bunker of FEDCO Trees and Michael Phillips, author of The Holistic Orchard, among others. CJ has taught orcharding workshops covering topics such as grafting, pruning, pest management, renovating old trees and much more. In this Orcharding 101 Workshop, CJ will cover the basics of how to properly maintain fruit tree varieties using organic practices. Topics will include pruning, pest control, disease identification and treatment and much more. The workshop will take place at Mossflower Farm in Sangerville on Route 23. Owner Leigh Wiley grows a variety of fruit trees using organic practices. At this location setting, workshop participants will not only get to hear and ask questions about orcharding topics, but they will also see examples of them first hand. Pre-registration is required to attend this workshop and the workshop is limited to 45 participants. This event will be held rain or shine and will be an outdoor event, so registrants are encouraged to dress appropriately. For more information and to register, please contact the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District by calling 207-564-2321 ext. 3, by emailing us at [email protected] or by stopping in our office in the USDA Service Center at 42 Engdahl Drive in Dover-Foxcroft, ME. Following the Brown Bag Lunch, President Vicki called the meeting to order. Roxy McGlauflin led the Club Collect, American’s Creed and Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Cathie Goodine took role call and read the secretary’s report. Carol Kilpatrick gave the Treasurer’s report. Roxy read a thankyou note from Jane Blay, art teacher at FA, thanking us for the money they received at the art show. The Linus Quilt wrap up showed 170 quilts being made. Anne Cress gave the Ice Out report. The winner was Mrs Salonick from Pittsfield, who guessed the exact date and time, April 29 at 3:15 P.M. Barb Austin spoke about purchasing flags for the poles on upper West Main Street. Following much discussion , members voted to do so. Hopefully that will be done by July 4. Local bussinesses will be asked to participoate and any one wishing to contribute to the flags can contact Barb Austin. Pat Jones suggested in the future all projects have a chairman. The meeting was adjourned and the annual meeting began with reports for the year being given. Carol Kilpatrick presented the budget for 2015-16. After much discussion it was accepted. Pat Jones, Auditor reported the books were all in order. We had all 15 meetings this year as the weather cooperated for all but one, which we made up the next week. We had a variety of programs, learning about Elder Abuse Prevention, Banking for Seniors and Helping Children, Tai Chi, Quilling and Ribbon embroidery, we also celebrated Mardi Gras, enjoyed an international dinner and a crazy hats/card game night, and a travelog of Alaska. A very successful High School Art Contest was held and we learned about the Mill Restoration Project. We all enjoyed a Christmas Party and on Wednesday, May 13, we will have our Annul Birthday Dnner at the Lake Shore House Restaurant in Monson. We donated money to the Kiwanis Community Christmas Campaign, $100 to Helping Hands with Heart, $350 to the new Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard. Heat Pumps/Air Conditioners To the Editor: We want to encourage all residents in the 16 towns of Piscataquis County to attend the next County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 19th at 8:30 a.m. at the County Court Complex, in the finance building, on East Maine St. Dover-Foxcroft. The commissioners are considering grants for two small business owners in the Unorganized Territory as presented by Ken Woodbury last November. One grant for David and Luisa Surprenant of Abol Bridge LLC to expand their Campgrounds for $120,000, and another grant for Maine Highlands Sugarworks LLC, where the applicant must be low to moderate income for $50,000. The problem with these grants is the fact that because they are in the unorganized territories, the county of Piscataquis, according to state law must apply for the grants which would then be distributed to the business owners. The County, according to Woodbury “will be on the hook for the money,” and the county will also have to do the accounting for the grants to make sure the monies are spent properly. Woodbury also stated he would have the applicants sign an agreement that they would be responsible not the county - and we say that this agreement is “ not worth the paper it is written on.” We are a poor rural county with an 11.5 percent unemployment rate and only 15,000 residents and we cannot be responsible for a total of $170,000 in dubious grants - for which the county would be obligated. The county commissioners are supposed to represent all of the people; and this is not in the best interest of the people of Piscataquis County. We urge everyone that has a concern to attend this meeting of your county commissioners on Tuesday, May 19th at 8:30.a.m Bob and Gail Lynch Sebec “...good for all Mainers...” To the Editor: I have been reading some letters in the Gazette about the proposed Northwoods National Park which I find disturbing. The people writing the letters are either misinformed, or they are trying to mislead the public. One phrase commonly used in these anti-park letters describes the park as a takeover of public land by the Federal Government, which implies a hostile action or use of imminent domain. The land for the park would be given to the government by a private individual so that it would be protected for all people for generations to come. No land would be “taken”. The anti-park letters also claim that people would be denied access. This is also misleading. Access would be denied only if one did not pay the park entrance fee. This is true of any state or federal park. One has to pay to play. It is only fair that those who want to use the park should pay. The days when we all had a “free ride” on paper company land are over. If people don’t want to pay the reasonable fees I suggest they go to the Maine Public Reserve lands, which offer free camping and are wonderful. Continued on next page R 12 YEA ND A PARTS OR LAB TY! However, an adjacent National Recreation Area is planned which will offer opportunities for hunting. snowmobiling and ATV’s. I have been to many National Parks, they are all great. I have never been disappointed in what they offer. The Federal Government runs them extremely well. Roxanne Quimby showed great vision and expertise in developing her business. It is a phenominal success story. Now she wants to give back to Maine, and her vision for the park is just as great if not more than her vision for business. The park would create many jobs and bring millions in revenue to our region. At the same time it would preserve and protect a northwoods ecosystem. I see no reason why a park and a viable timber industry cannot coexist. A Northwoods National Park would be good for all Mainers and all Americans. Milt Christianson. MOCA President Clyde Berry, encourages local historical organizations, civic associations, Boy and Girl Scout troops, and fraternal and veterans groups to lead community projects to care for local burial grounds in preparation for the Memorial Day holiday, May 25. On May 16, MOCA will kick off the annual observance with its Spring Program, May 16 in New Gloucester at the First Congregational-Christian Church. The church is located at 19 Gloucester Hill Road. More information on the Spring Program, featuring a report on the intricate carvings of 19th century stone carver Bartlett Adams (1726 to 1828), is available on the MOCA website at http://www.moca-me.org/ or Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/moca.me/ While MOCA encourages the active care of burial grounds, Berry discourages members of the public from undertaking cleaning or repairing gravestones without appropriate training. A “Cleaning and Leaning Workshop” will be held May 23 in Waterboro, hosted by the Waterboro Cemetery Committee. The workshop is MOCA’s program of Cemetery DOs and DON’Ts. A $20 donation is requested for registration including a pizza lunch. More information is available from Angela M.
