Warriors go Brách! Sport Week 6

March 5 2015

Head of Sport and Activities—Mr Dave Capra
Last Friday we held the inaugural ATC Interhouse Swimming Carnival and I believe that this was a snapshot of everything that we as a community believe is important. The day featured a variety of competitive and non-competitive
swimming events, novelty events in and out of the pool and culminated in the ATC Skins race which showcased the
strongest swimmers in our school battling it out over 25 metre eliminations.
The mood created by our very own DJ Jono Bolt was festive and fun, with both staff and students getting into the carnival atmosphere and enjoying being one of the lucky group of people who whose to be part of the ATC community.
I have always loved that our community celebrates individuality and the unique people who make up the vibrant,
social and supportive school that we are. Regardless of whether you were swimming in Division 1 or 13 or whether
you were overcoming some very tough challenges to get to the end of the pool, on Friday at ATC, you were somebody! The reason you were somebody was because the boys in our community had each others backs, they supported each other, they cheered for each other and they celebrated brilliant victories and sensational losses with the
same vigour. And as a staff group we couldn’t have been prouder of our boys.
Several of our teachers, Ms Erin Moffat, Mr Mark Watson, Mr Sam Hassett, Mr Paddy Behan and Mr Matthew Ribeiro
took on responsibility for leading the house spirit and war cries within each house. My thanks to them for the huge
role they played in creating a great culture of pride, participation and competition. The Red Bulls, the Gold Miners,
The Green Leprechauns and the Blue Vikings competed with pride and enthusiasm and lead by Ms Moffatt the Blue
Vikings claimed the very first ATC Interhouse competition and bragging rights until the Interhouse Cross Country on
Friday 24 April.
I would like to thank Mr Paul Jones, along with Mrs Fiona Kearney and Ms Tayla Jones for organising and running a
brilliant carnival; our dedicated staff for enthusiastically facilitating swimming, novelty, dance and other events and
to the awesome group of ATC boys who did what they do best here at ATC… they were boys being boys and they
loved it!
I hope your son has a great camp experience and has the opportunity to make new friends, challenge himself to push
himself beyond his known comfort zones and to enjoy a break away from the hectic school life that we all live.

Term 2 Sports
The official pre-season for a number of pre-season
sports begins in the coming weeks. An overview of
each sport is included in this newsletter edition.
With so many sporting opportunities on offer, we
hope that every boy finds something he wishes to
participate in.

The Power of a Quote
There are thousands and thousands of motivational quotes and saying that can be used to inspire us all in many situations. I
chose today to share the selection below as I find these especially inspiring to success in sport and more importantly pertinent
to self-improvement and self-success.
I ask you (ATC students) to read through the below quotes and think about your strengths, build on these, then think about
your weaknesses and focus on improving only one thing at a time. DO NOT CLOUD YOUR MIND with all the negatives but focus
on one thing to improve at a time. Keep doing what you do best and do it even better. Once you achieve this your confidence
will lift and the weaknesses become not so weak but easier to improve.
Stay positive, stay strong and determine and you can weather any storm. You will be fine if you first Trust in yourself and are
prepared to work hard on constantly improving. Good luck!
To succeed...You need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you. Tony Dorsett

If you can believe it, the mind can achieve it. Ronnie Lott

Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there. Bo Jackson

You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do. A J Kitt

The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital.
Joe Paterno

Ask not what your teammates can do for you. Ask what you can do for your teammates. Magic Johnson

The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the
world, but if they don't play together, the club won’t be worth a dime. Babe Ruth

How you respond to the challenge in the second half will determine what you become after the game, whether you are a
winner or a loser. Lou Holtz
Cross Country Round Up
We are experiencing good numbers at cross country training but we can do better. Cross Country is a great opportunity for our
students to increase their fitness levels through aerobic and anaerobic based sessions. Our goal is to also make these sessions a
valuable learning experience whilst ensuring that they are still having enjoyment and fun.
We are gearing up for an exciting 2015 season of Cross Country. In 2015 Ambrose Treacy College is happy to announce that it
will be partnering up with the University of Queensland Athletics Club. This association will allow us to compete regularly at
Queensland Athletics cross country events as well as also bolster our current sporting programs on offer at ATC. There will be
numerous opportunities for our students to compete at a social and competitive level during the 2015 ATC Cross Country season. All Years 4 to Year 8 Students are Welcome to ATC Cross Country . Tuesday Mornings (6.45am to 8.00am): Cross Country
Preseason. We will meet at the Shed/Canteen Area at Hopgood Oval. Thursday Mornings (6.45am to 8.00am): Cross Country
Preseason. We will meet at the Shed/Canteen Area at Hopgood Oval.
Aquatics Coordinator — Mr Paul Jones
Swimming Carnival – The school swimming carnival went ahead this week and a wonderful day was had by all students, staff
and parents. A big thanks to everyone who was involved with the success of this event. The aim for the day was to create a fun
environment that promoted participation and house spirit. The day was successful in both areas. Special thanks must go to the
year 4 parents who assisted with the year 4 morning tea, Mr Donatini for his work on the oval events, Mr Bolt for his great
choice in music and Mr Capra for his ability to be in control with the microphone. A big congratulations to all the year level
champions and our first ATC skins champion who have all been listed in this newsletter. We look forward to a bigger and better
event next year.
ATC Age Swimming Championships – The swimming age championships that were scheduled for this Friday night will be postponed due to a number of swimmers being disadvantaged by returning from camp on Friday afternoon. We will look at the calendar and advise the new date next week. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.
Water Polo – We are coming into the last round of fixtures this weekend before the start of finals. ATC2 have a bye this week
and therefore have no more games. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the boys in ATC 2 for their dedication and
commitment to the sport. It has been a massive learning curve for all the boys in this team and they will be much better next
season for having the experience. ATC 1 play this Saturday at 2.40pm and both weeks results will be posted next week.

Cricket News - Mr Brett Henschell
Round 5 on Saturday was the most successful to date for ATC Years 5-8 against a mix of teams from TSS, BGS and
GT, recording six wins from nine matches. There were some very close encounters with 6A passing the BGS total in
the final over of the match and 6B storming home to take the last four BGS wickets for six runs to win by just one
run. 6C went very close to toppling BGS as well but fell short despite the effort of Will Juillerat who took four wickets in one over including a hat trick.
Year 4 teams playing in the Brisbane North competition performed very well winning two out of three matches.
Whilst the mighty 4As continued on their merry way and remain undefeated, it must be mentioned that the Year 4
U10 White team won their very first match of the season. These boys have worked hard on their skills since October last year, never given up at any stage, and were rewarded on Saturday with a resounding win. Well done boys!
Well done Mr Paige. Can you double up?
Most concerning on the weekend was the fact some players failed to advise their team manager or coach that
they could not play and simply did not turn up at the ground or sent a message with someone else that they
weren’t playing. This is not good enough! Some teams played short. It is your responsibility to the team to alert
the manager and/or coach that you cannot play, even if this is on the morning of the match, so that a replacement can be found and your team can take the field with eleven players. Further, players must be at the ground,
ready to warm up, at least 30 minutes before the start of play. It is not good enough to turn up 5 minutes before
the start of the match and think you are ready to play. Much needs to be done in preparation before the match
commences and, if you are not there to listen and learn from your coach, you are simply letting yourself and your

Cross Country—currently underway
Training will be held on 3 mornings per week with boys encouraged to attend 2 sessions and a 3rd if they are selected into the
advanced squad. Races will be mainly held on Saturday and Sundays with the occasional Friday. Cross Country is a great sport
for all, regardless of whether boys wish to run at a representative level or to build fitness for other sports. We would love to
see our soccer, rugby, basketball and AFL players attending weekly sessions for fitness and running at occasional meets to track
progress and to set and achieve personal performance goals. Our first official race is the ATC Interhouse Cross Country Championships which will be held at our AFL Fields at Chelmer on Friday 24 April, followed by the QLD Athletics All Schools Cross Country Championships which are held during the afternoon on Saturday 2 May.

up next week (Monday 2 March) with skills session run by our Head Coach Mr Remo Buess on Monday and Friday mornings
from 6.45am to 8.00am. Boys can attend as many or as few of these sessions as they wish, however we would encourage boys
who wish to make a strong start in terms of selections to attend as many as possible. Names of boys will be taken at the sessions so there is no need to sign on. Boys are to wear boots and appropriate training gear (preferably not HPE uniform) and are
to shower in the pool change rooms and change into day uniforms after training. The season will commence with the inaugural
ATC Football Festival will be held on Sunday 26 April and then games will begin on Saturday 2 May against Nudgee College
(away) and will continue until Saturday 13 June. Games will mostly be played in the morning, both home and away.
Tennis – commenced Monday 2 March
The tennis program at ATC is geared at boys who have previously has lessons or have played competitive tennis previously.
Whilst we would love to offer beginner classes, the court space and intensive coaching required makes this impracticable. Our
tennis program is run by Lifetime Tennis and we can recommend their beginner programs.
Tennis at ATC features an Open and Age Championship, school fixtures, club fixtures and a variety of tours and competitive opportunities including the Brisbane International Primary Schools Challenge.
Training begins next week in preparation for the College Open Championships which will be held on Sunday 29 March beginning
at 8.00am. All boys who wish to play tennis for the College are required to play in this championships. This will be a great event
and will be a key opportunity for allocating boys to play the school season in Term 2. Fixtures during Term 2 will be played on
Saturday, either in the morning or early afternoon, depending on age groups.
