Newsletter Editor, Tom Koehler
Newsletter Editor, Tom
Koehler has been researching
the AMA Leader Club Program.
There are three levels in the
Program, Bronze, Silver, and
Gold. Tom believes that our
Club can qualify for the Gold
Level. He offered to complete
the paperwork, and help with
meeting a few final
requirements so that the Club
can qualify.
which is quite good compared
to previous years.
Jim also displayed an AMA
Certificate recognizing our
Club's participation in the 2014
Wounded Warrior Project. That
participation was headed up by
Tom Koehler, who added the
program to a Club 40 Racing
event last summer. Both Tom
and Jim advocated that the
Club participate in the program
again in 2015.
Indoor flying continues
through March. Sessions at
Tipton Lakes Athletic Club are
scheduled for February 8 and
March 8, with an additional free
session scheduled for February
15. Sessions at St. Peter's
Lutheran School Gym are
scheduled for February 22 and
March 22.
Jim stated that the AMA has
requested that chartered clubs
send in Club Histories for their
records. Mike Bealmear, Club
Webmaster, has volunteered to
donate his time for this
monumental task.

formed to study the possibitly,
researching the various aspects
of installing and maintaining a
geo-textile surface. Members

Indoor Flying
Happy Birthday!
Indoor flying is being held at
the Tipton Lakes Athletic
Club and St Peters Lutheran
Gym this year. Please see the
information below regarding
specifics and remaining dates
for flying.
• Planes 20” wingspan or
smaller.
• Helicopters 180 mm rotor
diameter or smaller.
• 50-75 watt max on motors.
• 1-2 cell packs.
• Quads are welcome.
We want to provide a safe
environment as well as have
fun. Please use good judgment
when flying your aircraft and
respect the other types of
aircraft in the air with you.
If we see someone
disrupting the flying for
everyone else, we will point this
out to that person. If that cannot
be corrected, we will ask that
person to leave.

This year’s Big News is that we
will be racing Two Classes!!
Those, who have been racing
for three years or so have
wanted to go faster, this year,
the winningest fliers of the past
will be using the Ball-Bearing
Engines and racing in Club 40
Silver.
The class we have been
running, which uses the
bushing engines, has been
renamed, nation-wide, as Club
40 Bronze.
Five or six people have said
they will start racing this year.
They and those who have
raced only a few times will be
flying together in the Bronze
Class. That means we will have
new winners in the Bronze
Class. With 7 racers per class,
there will be no Back-to-back
heats.

Tom Hartman’s OK “CUB” CO2

Tom Hartman “Engine
Collector Extraordinaire”,
brought in his OK “Cub” CO2
engine for the club meeting
show and tell. He related that
the cylinder fins on the engine
are for attracting heat. This will
keep the cylinder from freezingup while running. It is quite the
rarity to see these engines
anymore. Thanks for bringing it
in Tom!

Dave McDonley (R) talking about
his electric T6 Texan
Dave McDonley brought in his
T6 Texan for show and tell.
The Texan took Dave two days
to assemble. Monokote was
used to cover it which was also
with the kit. Nine gram Tower
Hobbies pro servos are used
throughout. It has a 2212
brushless motor. And, it uses a
3 cell Lipo for go juice. It was
an easy plane to assemble
because of the laser cut parts
that interlock. The kit is made
from Nick Ziroli's plans. This
plane is also for sale in the Buy,
Sell or Trade section of this
newsletter. Check it out. You
could be the proud owner of an
electric T6 Texan and also be
flying it at the Electric Fly-in /
Wounded Warrior Project
benefit this summer, August
29th 2015! Thanks for sharing it
with us Dave!
WINGTIPS
EDITORS NOTE: Please be sure to
use your own modeling experience
and "good ol' common sense"
when trying these tips.
IRONING MONOKOTE INTO
TIGHT PLACES
Having a lot of trouble ironing
Monokote into cockpits and
other small places where a
standard iron will not fit? You
can buy a tiny iron called a “trim
sealing tool”. This will work in
most cases with its selection of
interchangeable tips. Another
solution that may help is a
butter knife. Heat it on your iron
for about 30 seconds and use it
like an iron. It could also be
heated with a heat gun, but it
takes a bit longer. Heat is
transferred a lot better by
contact with the metal iron. The
knife will fit into tiny spaces
where an iron won’t and it will
reach a lot farther than the trim
irons that you find in the hobby
store. You can try the same
trick with a spoon for ironing
fillets and other concave
surfaces. Spoons have to be
heated with a heat gun rather
than an iron, usually.
want to find out if paint is
compatible you can try it on one
of the scraps first. The same
goes for any building technique
you have never used before.
Unless it's something you are
confident that you can do
properly the first time then
practice on something other
than your model.
PERFECT PLANS?
Don't assume the building
plans are perfect. Paper
expands and contracts with the
weather. Lines may not be
straight and may not be spaced
correctly. It's probably less
likely that two symmetrical
drawings (such as wings) are
not drawn the same. Even with
the advent of CAD drawn plans,
it’s still a possibility.
Remember:
“Everybody has a plan until they
get punched in the face!

TRYING NEW BUILDING
TECHNIQUES
Do not attempt new techniques
directly on your model without
practicing on something other
than the model first. Get in the
habit of performing tests.
For example, when you're
finishing your model, finish a
couple scraps of sheet wood at
the same time. Then if you
