Third Sunday in Lent
The Service of Holy Communion
Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday
and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which
means “spring.” The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically,
Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts and then
became a time for penance by all Christians. Because Sundays are always little Easters,
the penitential spirit of Lent should be tempered with joyful expectation of the
Resurrection. Paraments, stoles and banners are purple and ash colors symbolizing
penitence and royalty.

space; something happens here. We gather from a busy world; approach with great
expectancy; God meets us in this sacred place. Something happens here. Who are we
that God comes here, shows us each our sacred worth? At this table common people
find the pow’r to change the earth. Price is broken, fear is gone. Hate and greed are
left behind. Thus we’re changing and we’re learning how to live by God’s design. Let
it happen everywhere, where we work, at school, in town. May this love and peace be

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. He was put to death for our sins and
raised for our justification. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you
gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us

On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke
the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for
