COMMUNITY RALLIES TO REBUILD WARMING SHELTER DESTROYED BY FIRE
In mid-January, the Mitchell Brook warming shelter on
the Dungarvon River (Trail 58 between Blackville and
Doaktown), used by many snowmobilers and other
outdoor enthusiasts, was completely destroyed by fire.
The shelter’s primary use had been to provide warmth to
those who explore the great outdoors during the winter
months; it also served as a gathering place for the
Miramichi Snowgoers Club 22.
Chris Hennessy, President of the Snowgoers Club and a
Blackville Village councillor, said that the structure
burned down sometime overnight on January 17. While
the cause of the fire is unknown, it is believed that it
may have been started from an old stove that was used
inside the building.
Upon hearing news of the destruction, the community worked together to build a new and improved shelter.
With donations of lumber, materials and labour from several local businesses, and with the help of many people from the
club, the new shelter was constructed over a two-day period. The new, bigger shelter holds up to 30 and has a built-in
wood shed.
Hennessy says that following the fire, he was approached by
Mike Beers, a Rexton contractor, who wanted to help rebuild
the hut. Beers' sons, Ryan and Jesse, also brought with them
all the tools and equipment necessary for the build. Hennessy
said this donation of time, labour and resources was very
much appreciated, and expressed his gratitude on behalf of
Miramichi Snowgoers Club 22 to the contractor and his sons.
He said the Club's appreciation is also extended to everyone
who came out to help with the project.
"It was great to see and we really appreciated it. It was pretty
heartwarming," he said, noting his club has a membership of
approximately 300 people.
The grand opening of the new Mitchell Brook shelter is

The Friends, in partnership with the Doaktown
Curling Club, are now selling tickets ($5.00 each) for
their Annual Golf Ball Drop Fundraiser. A great
little item to tuck in with a gift for that special
person! The drop will take place on Saturday,
August 1, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at the Doaktown
Fairgrounds with the winner(s) taking home 50% of
the funds raised. Look in the April edition of the
Salmon Country News (and for posters around town)
for rules, contact information, etc.
Donation forms to help with the purchase of park
benches, lamp posts, trees and shrubs will be
available shortly (all contributions of $25 or more are
eligible for a tax receipt).

MUNICIPAL WATER USERS
We have been experiencing higher than usual water consumption with the South Side
Water Supply (originally the Spring System). This excessive usage is causing high
turbidity readings and loss of water which may result in more frequent boil orders if not
corrected. These Boil Orders Advisories not only create inconvenience for our users but also increase
the cost of our water service.
We are working to correct this problem; however, we need your help. If you are running water
continuously in your home or business to prevent pipes from freezing or for other some other reason,
this would be one major source of water loss. We ask that users stop this practice immediately.
We are isolating high water usage in areas on the south side to identify water usage problems and
potential leaks. However, if you are running water continuously, please let us know. It will save us
time and money in correcting this water loss.
If you require a temporary shut-off from the Village water supply in order to correct a leak, please
contact Councillor Paul Gillespie (TEL: 365-7970, Ext. 108) or our Water & Wastewater Systems

Following a successful run last year, the Greater
Blackville Resource Centre’s Soup’s On program is back,
offering free meals and community spirit throughout the
greater Blackville area. Various organizations and
churches will be hosting a free community luncheon
every Tuesday until April 28, 2015.
The first of the series was held at the Knights of
Columbus Hall in Quarryville on Tuesday, February 24
with about 40 people in attendance.

(SEWAGE) USERS
We would like to bring to your attention a very serious problem with regard to the treatment
of sewage waste in municipal and private sewage systems. You may have read recent articles
about the problems caused by what is being flushed down toilets -- things like so-called
“flushable” wipes, baby wipes, and other garbage items that cause serious and expensive damage to sewage
disposal systems.
Sewage treatment systems are designed to treat human waste and toilet paper only, and we would ask that all
users please honour this policy. We have already had to repair one of our Lift Stations due to this problem, and
we would like to avoid any additional and unnecessary expenditures if at all possible.
We are asking for the public’s cooperation in dealing with this problem. Should you have any questions,

The following letter has been forwarded on behalf of the Miramichi Valley Business Association to the
Honorable Denis Landry, Minister of Natural Resources for the Province of New Brunswick:
In response to your request for public input into the Forestry Strategy implemented by the previous
Government, I offer the following comments for your consideration:
As you are well aware, one of the resources fundamental to our development as a nation and a province is our
forests. Despite the fact that some groups are demanding the plan be scrapped, it is wise to note that these are the
same people who are against the Energy East Pipeline, Natural Gas Exploration/Development, and the Sisson
Brook Partnership mine at Sisson Brook. In my opinion, these people have very little, if any, credibility among the
general population of NB and do not offer sound scientific evidence to support their demands.
The Canadian Forest Products Industry is just now beginning to experience a comeback and has now changed its
objective in becoming a major manufacturing industry rather than just hewers of wood. To this end, I support the
Forestry Agreement and advise that our Business Community and Villages here in the Miramichi River Valley
depend fully on forestry at the present time. I urge you to allow this strategy to develop as planned.
JD Irving Ltd’s announced investments in the new mill at Doaktown and the upgrades to the Chipman Mill are a
matter vital to the economy and the survival of the Village of Doaktown and the other Villages and
non-incorporated in the surrounding areas. There are major spin-off opportunities for the woods workers and
truckers here in the Valley.
Please do not halt this Economic Development reality for our region by cancelling or changing this Forest
Strategy.

Business Scholarship
The Miramichi Board of Trade created its Business Scholarship Program to encourage
and support the next generation of business leaders to succeed in the ever-changing field
of business studies.
We award up to $2,500 annually to students of the Central New Brunswick Academy or
the Miramichi Adult Learning Center who are interested in pursuing a career in any area of business including
but not limited to business or office administration, finance, economics, human resources, accounting,
or business or office management.
The application deadline for the Business Scholarship Program is Thursday, April 30, 2015. The monies will be
distributed in January 2016 upon receipt of proof of enrolment.
To be eligible, you must be:
• a member of the 2015 graduating class at the Central New Brunswick Academy or the Miramichi Adult
Learning Center;
• accepted to a full-time accredited degree, diploma, or certificate program at a Canadian public university
or college;
• enrolled in a program focused on business; and
• in excellent academic standing.
Key Selection Criteria:
Provide a short essay describing your area(s) of interest and commitment related to business, and your proposed academic and career path to be successful in this field. Also, highlight past/current/planned activities
that demonstrate your leadership potential (maximum of 500 words);
Provide a copy of your high school transcript;
Provide proof of acceptance at a Canadian public university or college.

STAY SAFE THIS WINTER
Given the severity of the weather over the last few months, the Provincial Fire Marshal urges all
residents to consider the following:
Clear roofs of excessive snow and ice build-up but be careful not to damage gas and oil service to
the building. Clearing roofs can be dangerous so please leave this to the professionals.
Keep all chimneys and vents clear to prevent carbon monoxide from backing up into the building.
Some vents, such as pellet stove vents, may exit the building through a wall and are therefore
susceptible to being blocked by excessive snow build-up.
Be sure that you have a working carbon monoxide detector in your home. This is your first line of defence against this
colorless, odorless, toxic and flammable gas formed by the incomplete burning of gasoline, kerosene, oil, propane or wood.
Keep all exits clear of snow so that occupants can escape quickly in case of a fire or other emergency. Keep in mind that
windows should be cleared to allow a secondary means of escape in case your normal exits are blocked by fire. Keeping exits
clear also allows emergency workers to gain access to your building.
Be aware that roofs can collapse with little or no warning. The following warning signs could indicate that you are in danger
and, if so, you should evacuate the building immediately and notify your local fire department or a structural engineer to
determine if the building is safe:
Sagging roof
Severe or new roof leaks
Cracked or split wood beams
Bends or ripples in metal supports
Recent cracks in walls, drywall or masonry
Sprinkler heads pushed down below ceiling tiles
Doors that pop open
Doors or windows that are difficult to open
Bowed utility pipes attached to the ceiling
Creaking, cracking or popping sounds
Sheared off screws from steel frames

BLACKVILLE REC COUNCIL HOSTS SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY SKATING PARTY
The Blackville Recreation Council hosted their annual free skating party for local youth on Friday, February 13.
Over 75 skaters braved the cold weather and hit the ice for a couple hours of skating and family fun.
Throughout the evening, 50 prizes were given out, including gift cards and certificates that were donated by
local businesses.
The Recreation Council wishes to thank everyone who helped to make the night such a success, especially the
selfless volunteers who spend countless hours clearing the ice and maintaining the rink’s premises.
