Doing Business in Turbulent Times November 19-22, 2014 Dear Colleagues, The 2014 edition of the annual Atlantic Council Energy & Economic Summit, entitled “Doing Business in Turbulent Times”, took place at the magnificent Grand Tarabya Hotel, located directly on the Bosphorus in Istanbul, on November 19-22. The internationally-acclaimed 2014 Summit brought together more than 450 top-level business, government, nongovernmental organization, and other leaders from more than forty countries, including a president, a vice president, a prime minister, twenty-two ministers, and more than forty-four global CEO’s. The Vice President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, together with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, Ahmet Davutoğlu delivered the keynote addresses during a special closing session of the Summit on Saturday, November 22, 2014. Earlier in the week, Taner Yıldız, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey; Dr. Ernest Moniz, the US Secretary of Energy; and Miguel Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, European Commission addressed a standing-room only audience during the opening session. Other keynote speakers and distinguished guests included Bujar Nishani, President, Republic of Albania; Ali Babacan, Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey; and Mehmet Şimşek, Minister of Finance, Turkey. This year’s Istanbul Summit also hosted, for the second time, an Expanded Regional Energy Ministerial, entitled “Financing Critical Energy Infrastructure Investments: Challenges and Opportunities”. Some seventeen countries officially took part and were joined by over thirty invited business and policy leaders and experts at the ministerial which was jointly chaired by Secretary Moniz and Minister Yıldız. In addition to more than twenty formal sessions, lunches, and special dinners, more than 100 bilateral meetings took place during the Summit between and among its government and business participants. The content of the Summit, which was reported worldwide by some 200 media representatives, looked extensively at global energy, economic, and political issues which dominated the world’s agenda in 2014. Since 2012, The Istanbul Summit quickly became Atlantic Council’s flagship international event to promote transatlantic interests in and engagement with government, business, and other leaders in this region to support cooperation and integration among its constituent countries. The Atlantic Council was represented at the 2014 Summit by its Chairman, Jon M. Hunstman, Jr.; its President and CEO, Fred Kempe; close to twenty board and international advisory board members; and several members of its top management. The Atlantic Council is grateful to the Summit’s corporate partners whose generous support helped make this annual event possible, as well as to all the participants, speakers, and moderators. On the following pages please find scenes from the 2014 Summit. You may find more information about the event, including transcripts and videos of selected sessions, at www.acsummit.org.
