The mission of the church is clearly stated in Matthew 28:18-20 “And Jesus
came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven
and on earth.
19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that
I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
The purpose of the global Christian community is to spread of gospel of
Jesus Christ to ends of the earth. It is a simple message that God loved the world
enough to offer His Son Jesus of Nazareth for our sins. We are co-laborers with
God in the great enterprise of kingdom building (see 1 Corinthians 3:9). Christians
have been saved with the purpose of God in mind. Joe S. Ellis remarked, “The
same gospel that calls us to salvation also calls us to commitment in promoting the
cause of Christ as first priority in life.”1 The work of mission is essential to the
church’s existence.
We have been committed to the Great Commission for more than twenty
years, beginning with the ordination of our first Missionary, Sister Lula Cofield,
who was commissioned to serve on short term trips in the Caribbean. Since that
time we have been engaged on multiple fronts as we live out the Great
Commission. It is important that you continue to pray for and financially support
the work we do in Africa. I want to list a few of the things that we have done and
are currently doing.
1. Over the past year we have helped construct eight churches in the region of
Pokot, one of the poorest and driest regions in Kenya. One church has been built
in Uganda.
2. We have helped provide transportation, a motor bike for Rev. William
Luromoy, moderator of the Pokot Region. This is vital to his work in that area.
3. We led an effort that provided more than 30 Kindles for teachers at the AIC
Girl’s School and the Kyumbi Urban Academy.
4. Through our partnerships with friends and other churches we have delivered
tons of medical supplies, food, water, clothing, Bibles, computers, tablets, and
training materials for pastors and church leaders, in addition to small financial
gifts.
5. SCBC supports five pastors and their families with a monthly stipend of $125.
6. SCBC supports the Bible School for pastors, which is located in Machinery,
Kenya.
7. We have trained nearly 2,000 pastors in the ten years we have been in Kenya.
It matters that you give and it matters that you give consistently. The little
given by each of you goes much farther than you realize. Thanks to you we have
been able to do great works and we are just getting started.

1. Mastectomy: surgical removal of the

themselves. Rather, they seek only to promote the
work of God. It is important to be faithful, no matter
where one is, or what one does.

Days of Jesus (Köstenberger, Taylor, and Stewart, 2014). The forty events of Jesus’s final week
(commonly called Passion Week) are broken down into forty days of reading. Days 12 through 18
are shown below. Some days of reading will cover two events. The Old Testament passages are
citations either quoted in the New Testament passage of the day or provide pertinent background
information about the events taking place (e.g., the New Covenant or Passover). Select either
Matthew’s Gospel or Mark’s gospel and supplement your reading with Luke and John. If you have
more time, read all Scripture passages on the given day. Most importantly, as you read, pray and

CORPORATE SPIRITUALITY-Part 3
The Personal and the Corporate
Comparatively speaking, the Old Testament
lays more stress on corporate life while the
New Testament more fully develops the
personal dimension in addition to the social
dimension of life in community. But both
Testaments affirm the personal and the
corporate as well as the inextricable
relationship between the two. The personal
inside-out transformation that is realized
through the presence and action of Jesus is
meant to reconcile and renew our
relationships with others. Since spirituality
does not flourish in isolation, the corporate
process of discipleship should inform and
supplement
personal
discipleship.
Unfortunately, there is a natural tendency to
be pulled toward the extremes of
individualism on the one hand and of
institutionalism
on
the
other.
The
individualistic extreme minimizes the value of
life in community, while the institutional
extreme causes the person to be lost in the
service of the institution.
It is best to avoid the two horns of this
dilemma by embracing the both-and tension
between solitude and community. Dietrich
Bonhoeffer put it well in Life Together:
Let him who cannot be alone beware of
community. He will only do harm to himself
and to the community. Alone you stood
before God when he called you; alone you
had to answer that call; alone you had to
struggle and pray; and alone you will die and
give an account to God. You cannot escape
from yourself; for God has singled you out. If
you refuse to be alone you are rejecting
Christ's call to you, and you can have no part
in the community of those who are called. . . .
Let him who is not in community beware of
being alone. Into the community you were
called, the call was not meant for you alone;
in the community of the called you bear your
cross, you struggle, you pray. You are not
alone, even in death, and on the Last Day you
will be only one member of the great
congregation of Jesus Christ. If you scorn the
fellowship of the brethren, you reject the call
of Jesus Christ, and thus your solitude can
only be hurtful to you.
When we accept the polarities of solitude and
community, we discover that our personal
walk with God is nourished in communion
with others, and that this life of unity in
diversity and oneness in plurality is a
reflection of Trinitarian life.
Solitude, Community, and Ministry
In a series on "Moving from Solitude to
Community to Ministry," Henri Nouwen uses
Luke 6:12-19 to illustrate the combination of
these three disciplines in the life of our Lord.
Jesus spent the night in solitude with God, and
in the morning He formed community by
gathering His disciples around Him. Then in
the afternoon Jesus ministered with His
disciples to the physical and spiritual needs of
the people who came to hear Him. In the same
way, we should imitate this inside-out order
that flows from devotion to Christ (solitude),
to devotion to the community, to devotion to
the gospel (ministry). Community is the
bridge that connects solitude (intimacy with
God) with ministry to believers and
unbelievers.

**All ministry leaders are asked to please put work service requests for programs, scanning, etc. in at least two (2) weeks in advance before
the actual date of the event.
**Vouchers are due at least three (3) weeks in advance before the actual day that funds are needed.
**When scheduling meetings and/or special events, a room request/special event form MUST be turned into the church office two (2) weeks
in advance. No space will be given to ministries/organizations that have not been scheduled through the church office. If your scheduled
meeting will be cancelled, please notify the church office within 24 hours.
