Hummingbird Hawkmoth
As the climate warms up we are seeing more of this exotic visitor from Africa Curate’s Curiosities 17th January 2015 What an exciting start to 2015! Hemingby and Asterby have a new Rector, Revd Pam Fraser, Collated and Inducted on 15th January at West Ashby Church. It was a great evening and everyone who had put in the hard work deserve grateful thanks for making it such a friendly and memorable evening for all, I hope especially for Pam. The church looked wonderful and the refreshments were just right for the occasion. The Bishop delivered an interesting address with references to possums and Newcastle. You will have to ask Pam about the significance of that! Well, by the time you read this any New Year resolutions will probably have faded into the background, left forgotten as we often do when life after Christmas festivities catches up with us again. Ash Wednesday falls on the 18th February this year so Lent will be fast upon us. It used to be fashionable to ‘give up’ something for Lent, then fashions changed and it was felt more positive to do it in such a way as to be less of giving up and more adding to… I have begun to wonder about this and perhaps we could all do with the discipline of ‘going without’ something. Last year I encouraged people to add reading a couple of verses of the book of John to their daily reading. There is a great deal to be said for doing that and if continued over the Lent period it becomes a habit more easily. So this year I am going to encourage you all to give up something for Lent and to use the benefits of that for others and also for yourselves. I plan on giving up biscuits for Lent so I am hoping that all around me will not try to encourage me into bad ways! I may also give up doing quite as much and the joy of that is founded in the arrival of the Horncastle Group Rector, Revd Charles Patrick who will be Collated and Inducted on 26th February at St Mary’s Church. I cannot say thank you enough, or express how very much I have appreciated your support and friendship and dedication during the past few very busy months. Our retired Clergy have done a wonderful job too, especially given we have so many vacancies still in our Deanery. I will continue to be Curate in all the parishes until I complete my training in May and so long as I pass the scrutiny required, then I will be pleased to work with both Pam and Charles as an Ordained Local Minister. 2 We move forward this year in our year of Discipleship. Being a disciple of Christ has many facets. It is not just something we ’do’. It is more a case of God finds us, and uses us. We need to feel joyful about that and become people who will confidently tell others about the love of Jesus Christ. We need to faithfully follow in Christ’s footsteps so perhaps the discipline of Lent would be a good reminder for our year and a good place to start. Blessings for Lent. Revd Cilla Smith GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE AT RED HILL April 3rd Procession commences at 10 am Procession starts hers 3 Women’s World Day of Prayer Friday 6th March 2pm Horncastle Methodist Church Speaker Revd Eleanor Smith Theme. Jesus said to them: Do you know what I have done for you? Prepared by Christian women of The Bahamas The Womens World Day of Prayer occurs annually and, this year, The Day of Prayer service for 2015 has been written by the Christian women of The Bahamas. Although written by women, all are invited. Increasingly men and children are participating. Over 36 hours, 170 countries will have taken part. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland over 5,000 services will be held. Further information about the organisation can be found on the following website www.wwdp.org.uk/ Some of the prayers which are being used on 6th March are copied below Praise God for blue skies and turquoise seas, for shimmering sands and lush green vegetation, for multi-‐coloured fish and orange-‐pink flamingos. Praise God for the many different islands that make up The Bahamas; for their colourful traditions and unique customs; for music, art and crafts, dance and drama. Praise God for the friendly, resourceful, island people, for hard-‐working women who provide for their families, for carers of the vulnerable and all who walk Christ’s way of love. Praise God for The Bahamas! 4 Lord Jesus, As you washed your disciples’ feet, bathe us in your refreshing spirit. As you wiped away the dust of the road, wipe away our day’s accumulation of stress and tiredness. As you took the towel to dry sore feet, soothe the sore places in our lives, so that replenished, renewed and restored, we are ready to follow your way of servant love. Amen John 13: 1-17 News from Lincoln Diocese The Reverend (Peter) Charles Patrick has been appointed to the post of Rector of the Benefice of the Horncastle Group. His installation service will take place on Thursday 26th February at 7.30pm in St Mary's Church, Horncastle, with the Bishop of Lincoln and Archdeacon of Lincoln officiating. The Reverend Pamela Fraser was licensed as Rector of the Asterby and Hemingby Groups on 15th January 2015 by the Bishop of Lincoln. 5 Plans grow to put WiFi in every church Extracted from an article by Tim Wyatt in the Church Times 11th January 2015 THE Church of England's Buildings Division has backed a plan to fit all of the C of E's 16,000 churches with WiFi internet access. This follows comments by Lord Lloyd-‐
Webber who said that connecting churches to the internet would make them the centres of their communities once again. "They should go back to traditions, which is that the medieval the nave of the church is always used for local businesses." Lord Lloyd-‐
Webber said he would help fund the plan himself, but also hoped that the Government would contribute as well. Lord Lloyd-‐Webber, who sit as a Conservative peer in the House of Lords, said that he had already begun discussing the scheme with ministers. In a pilot study at St Peter De Beauvoir Church in Hackney, a research team from University College, London, installed a no. of digital experiments inside the 170-‐year-‐old church: a WiFi-‐enabled prayer candle system allows visitors and parishioners to type a prayer for someone and see a virtual candle lit for them on a screen; motion-‐sensor-‐activated font lets people inscribe their worries or sins on to a touchscreen and see them symbolically disintegrate into the waters. Prayers can also be projected on to the floor, and the academics are looking into fitting interactive lighting or even talking pews. The director of the Cathedral and Churches Buildings Division, Janet Gough, said that the Church was ideally placed to build up a national network. "We will be talking with those involved to explore how to build on the existing projects, such as the diocese of Norwich's WiSpire programme, and the provision of free WiFi for all visitors at individual cathedrals such as Chester, Canterbury, Ely, and Liverpool, to expand WiFi coverage countrywide."

Once again, the 'December Hardy Few' who visited and sang carols around the villages, also to our churches in the Hemingby Group who donated money from their services, I would like to say THANK-YOU on behalf of the carol singers, for giving so generously to our chosen charity. A total of £800 was raised and will go to the local branch of The Red Cross KB The amazing Painted Lady The Painted Lady is a particularly beautiful butterfly which sometimes appears in great numbers – 2009 being an notable year. The question of whether it hibernates, migrates or simply emerges in huge numbers from chrysalises was answered when 10,000 British observers combined with radars, tracked the butterfly movements across southern England. The reason the answer had eluded scientists for so long was that Painted Lady travels at a high altitude out of view of butterfly observers on the ground. Radar records revealed that Painted Ladies fly at an average altitude of over 500 metres on their southbound trip and can clock up speeds of 30 mph by selecting favourable conditions. The findings also revealed that the species undertakes a phenomenal 9,000 mile round trip from tropical Africa to the Arctic Circle – almost double the length of the famous migrations undertaken by Monarch butterflies in North America. The whole journey is not undertaken by individual butterflies but is a series of steps by up to six successive generations so Painted Ladies returning to Africa in the autumn are several generations removed from their ancestors who left Africa earlier in the year. 11 Belchford news Richard Durrant -‐ a big THANK YOU to everyone who supported this event. A short Thanksgiving service commencing at 3.45 pm will be led by Phyll Durow (lay minister) to close the festival. Chaste Snowdrop, venturous harbinger of Spring, And pensive monitor of fleeting years! W. Wordsworth 1819 Migration then and now Surprising as it may seem, migration and national boundaries is a topic quite common in the Bible. As well as upholding and instituting governments, Acts tells us that God, 'made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands' (Acts 17:26). And yet God frequently oversees migration (often undocumented or illegal) from the early "wanderings" of humanity (Gen 11) to the Exodus and in the New Testament, the Magi (Matt 2) and Jesus' young family's flight into Egypt. God's people in Egypt are aliens in a foreign land, subjugated to slavery and legally inferior to Egyptian citizens. In His law, God reminds His people of their time in Egypt as a prompting to care for the foreigner, 'Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.' (Ex 22:21). Furthermore the Israelites were commanded to give some of their produce to passing foreigners, regardless of their guests' situation or status (Lev 19:9-‐10). 13 Dear Friends, 17th January 2015 The arrival of our new Rector from Australia is very welcome and we hope she will settle in quickly and enjoy being among us. Her return to the UK has put us in mind of the phenomenon of migration, both human (see p 20) and other species, which we can easily appreciate from our privileged vantage point in the Lincolnshire Wolds. The whole thing is rather fascinating – how do those swallows, cuckoos and other birds find their way back from The Gambia and Senegal, and what about the extraordinary multi-‐generational passages of butterflies such as The Painted Lady butterfly, which radar technology has shown fly from Africa to Iceland via the UK (page 14). And as the climate warms up, we are seeing the extraordinary looking Hummingbird Hawkmoth in much greater numbers: 3167 were seen in the UK in 2014 and, this year, one has been spotted already just south of Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire. With best wishes Sue and Alison (Editorial Team) Vacancy on Hemingby Group Council We are asking for someone to step into Stefan Urbanowicz’s shoes to act as the Hemingby Group Secretary.
