The END
of an ERA
From March onwards we will start supplying you the Dart foam cups and
containers which are manufactured to a high standard and we will be
able to offer you a very similar range, but be aware, the lids for the Solo
range will not generally fit the Dart range.

an end.
Two years ago the Dart
Container Corporation, who
also manufacture foam cups,
purchased Solo Europe and
have taken the decision to
close the Solo manufacturing
facility and move all the
production to their West
Midlands factory.

A Personal Opinion

Errol!!
In the mid-1970’s a family friend who
ran a ‘one man band’ packaging supply
business retired - and so I found myself
driving ‘a Noddy Van’ delivering all
sorts of paper bags and packaging that
we had never stocked before, to Market
stalls, Butchers, Bakers - and Uncle Tom
Cobbley!
I quickly realised that both the Butchers and Bakers
had packaging with a ‘stock’ design relevant to their
respective Trades - but there was nothing for our world
of Fish ‘n Chips! Hence I asked my cousin Alan Rogers,
a graphic artist to come up with a suitable design - and
so in 1976 our “Happy Fish on a bed of Chips“ was
born!
‘Errol’ seemed to capture the spirit of our Trade, and
besides adorning millions of carrier bags our Customers
started asking for ‘Happy Fish’ T-shirts, window display
panels, coasters and sundry other items.
Later, when making a delivery in a town I had never
been to before, I was trying to locate our new Customer
(before Sat-Nav.!). I became infuriated by the profusion
of signs showing The Colonel’s face, the Golden Arches,
Pizza Hut etc. etc. - but no branded sign for our Fish ‘n
Chip shop!
With the help of Mike Wallace we eventually produced
a superb three-dimensional ‘Happy Fish’ illuminated
sign to help our Customers ‘get branded’. Some 400
were produced and sold not only across the UK but in
Eire, Europe and one even went to Panama!
However, in spite of our Copyright and Trademark
Registration of Errol as belonging to Whitley’s, we have
had to maintain a constant vigilance against fraudsters
and counterfeiters.
We have stopped ‘pirated’ carrier bags coming in from
the Far East, printed paper from Hull, corrugated boxes
from Turkey - and so it goes on. We even had DFS using
Errol in one of their TV adverts without permission (and
showing up Fish ’n Chips as a litter source!).
We eventually received an apology and got them to
donate £5k to charity!
It just goes to show how much sought after our Errol
design is - so if you are one of our Customers who use
him in the promotion of your business - just take very
good care of him!
… And you can meet him ‘in the flesh’ at our
Exhibition on Sunday, April 26th, at the Macron
Stadium (Bolton Wanderers’ ground - just off the
M61, Junction 6). New products, new ideas, meet up
with Friends - and have some fun!
