Go Set A Watchman: by Harper Lee -- An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the
beloved, bestselling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee
first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been
lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014. Go Set a Watchman features many
of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later. Returning home
to Maycomb to visit her father, Jean Louise Finch—Scout—struggles with issues both
personal and political, involving Atticus, society, and the small Alabama town that
shaped her. Exploring how the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird are adjusting
to the turbulent events transforming mid-1950s America, Go Set a Watchman casts a
fascinating new light on Harper Lee’s enduring classic. Moving, funny and compelling,
it stands as a magnificent novel in its own right. Go Set a Watchman will be available
in July 2015.
Memory Man: by David Baldacci -- Amos Decker’s life changed forever-twice. The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person
from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a
chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked
him off the field for good, and left him with an improbable side effect--he can never
forget anything. The second time was at home nearly two decades later. Now a police
detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare--his
wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered. His family destroyed,
their killer’s identity as mysterious as the motive behind the crime, and unable to forget
a single detail from that horrible night, Decker finds his world collapsing around him. He
leaves the police force, loses his home, and winds up on the street, taking piecemeal
jobs as a private investigator when he can. But over a year later, a man turns himself
in to the police and confesses to the murders. At the same time a horrific event nearly
brings Burlington to its knees, and Decker is called back in to help with this investigation. Decker also seizes his chance to learn what really happened to his family that
night. To uncover the stunning truth, he must use his remarkable gifts and confront the
burdens that go along with them. He must endure the memories he would much rather
forget. And he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice. Memory Man will be available
in April 2015, and will stay with you long after the turn of the final page.

& Museum at Ohio State University that ran in 2014. The exhibit is Bill Watterson’s

original art of Calvin and Hobbes, along with Watterson’s original commentary. The
show also includes art from cartoons and cartoonists that Watterson has identified as
influential in the development of his art, including Peanuts, Pogo, Krazy Kat, Doonesbury, Pat Oliphant, Jim Borgman, Flash Gordon, Bloom County, and Steadman. The
book also includes an extensive, original interview with Watterson by Jenny Robb, the
exhibition’s curator. The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum is the repository of
the Bill Watterson Deposit Collection (including the entirety of Watterson’s Calvin and
Hobbes artwork).
Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania: by Erik Larson -- From
the #1 New York Times bestselling author and master of narrative nonfiction comes the
enthralling story of the sinking of the Lusitania On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its
tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed
out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants.
The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the
seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror
to the North Atlantic. But the Lusitania was one of the era’s great transatlantic “Greyhounds”—the fastest liner then in service—and her captain, William Thomas Turner,
placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had
kept civilian ships safe from attack. Germany, however, was determined to change
the rules of the game, and Walther Schwieger, the captain of Unterseeboot-20, was
happy to oblige. Meanwhile, an ultra-secret British intelligence unit tracked Schwieger’s
U-boat, but told no one. As U-20 and the Lusitania made their way toward Liverpool, an
array of forces both grand and achingly small—hubris, a chance fog, a closely guarded
secret, and more—all converged to produce one of the great disasters of history. It
is a story that many of us think we know but don’t, and Erik Larson tells it thrillingly,
switching between hunter and hunted while painting a larger portrait of America at the
height of the Progressive Era. Full of glamour and suspense, Dead Wake brings to
life a cast of evocative characters, from famed Boston bookseller Charles Lauriat to
pioneering female architect Theodate Pope to President Woodrow Wilson, a man lost
to grief, dreading the widening war but also captivated by the prospect of new love.
Gripping and important, Dead Wake captures the sheer drama and emotional power
of a disaster whose intimate details and true meaning have long been obscured by
history.

Houston Zoo Prepares
to Welcome New Gorillas
Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School
(STE) will celebrate its founder’s
Scottish heritage at the 51st annual Sounds of Scotland concert
event held on Tuesday, March 31,
2015 at Jones Hall in downtown
Houston.
Seven western lowland gorillas will soon arrive in Houston in preparation for the grand opening of the new gorilla habitat at the Houston Zoo,
opening Memorial Day weekend. The intricately designed space will hold
two groups of western lowland gorillas who will spend their days alternating between an outdoor habitat filled with lush landscape that mimics an African forest and a multi-tiered night house that includes private
bedrooms, an artistic 23-foot-tall climbing tree, and a behind-the-scenes
outdoor yard.
The Sounds of Scotland is a oneof-a-kind event showcasing the
best in Scottish music and dance.
Concert-goers will feel like they’ve
stepped into the majestic Highlands as world-renowned student
bagpipers, drummers and dancers
— all clad in traditional Scottish attire — take the stage.
These magnificent animal ambassadors offer the opportunity to increase
awareness and inspire conservation action to protect their wild counterparts. The Houston Zoo’s conservation efforts for these species will also
be communicated through interpretive messages and interactive experiences that reinforce compelling education programs.
“The Sounds of Scotland is a very
special event to us. Each year
our performers bring a new level
of excitement to this tradition,”
said Michael F. Cusack, Jr., STE
headmaster. “This is the school’s
marquee performance event. The
students look forward to it every
year and work very hard to ensure
they put on a better program than
the previous year. It’s a matter of
pride!”
STE’s Scottish Arts program has
been a part of the school’s unique
heritage from the start, and the
pipe band is among the world’s
most respected. The band has
won five Juvenile Pipe Band World
Championships in Scotland and
performed for Queen Elizabeth II
and former President George H.W.
Bush. STE’s Highland dancers
have made some history of their
own with numerous U.S. championships and top placement in the
world championships.
Tickets for the Sounds of Scotland may be purchased by visiting
www.stes.org/soundsofscotland.
All proceeds will help pay for the
pipe band’s trip to Scotland this
summer, where they’ll compete at
the world championships.
Established in 1955, Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School (STE) is a
private, Pre-K through 12 college
preparatory school that believes
in nurturing the mind and spirit of
its students through classical and
Christ-centered instruction.
With stimulating academics, vibrant visual and performing art
programs, and an emphasis on
college readiness, graduates leave
Saint Thomas’ well-prepared for
the rigors of higher education and
a productive life beyond STE.
For more information, please visit
stes.org or call 713-666-3111.
Once open to the public, guests will be able to see the gorillas through
many different areas of the habitat. From an arrival building with floor-toceiling windows looking out over the dry river bed, to an open boardwalk
alongside the gorilla’s naturalistic forest, guests will also see the gorillas
inside their state-of-the-art night house.
The first to arrive in the Bayou City will be a troop of male gorillas from
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, SC. Chaka (30), Mike (23) and
Ajari (14) are scheduled to arrive this week. Chaka and Mike lived at the
Riverbanks Zoo since July 2004 when the pair arrived from Philadelphia
Zoo in Pennsylvania. Ajari joined them in January 2013 from Knoxville
Zoo in Tennessee. Mike, one of the three gorillas making the move, has
a cardiac condition that will require attention throughout his trip and upon
arrival. The Houston Zoo and Riverbanks Zoo and Garden have worked
closely to create a travel and health monitoring plan to ensure all three
gorillas will arrive safely in Houston. The group is also working closely
with the Great Ape Heart Project based at Zoo Atlanta to develop a longterm medical plan which may include medication and possibly an implanted monitoring device.
The bachelor trio will alternate spaces at the Houston Zoo with a family
troop of three gorillas who will arrive in March from Louisville, KY and a
single female who will join the family troop from Audubon Zoo in New
Orleans.
Zuri (31), Holli (25) and their daughter Sufi (13) are arriving in Houston
from the Bronx Zoo after a nine month stay at the Louisville Zoo. Binti
(40) from Audubon Zoo has been chosen to join the family troop as a part
of the Species Survival Plan, a cooperation between Association of Zoos
and Aquarium (AZA) accredited zoos and aquariums to properly manage
specific, and typically threatened or endangered, species population.
The endangered western lowland gorilla faces many threats. Their native
habitat in central and west Africa is shrinking largely due to the expansion
of mining and agriculture in the area. The already dwindling population
faces the added threat from hunting. As one of man’s closest relatives
in the animal kingdom, their highly social nature and intelligence make
them prime ambassadors to educate our community about the threats
faced by all gorillas and the conservation work currently undertaken by
the Houston Zoo. Staff works in tandem with the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP) to improve the health of remaining gorilla populations through improved human health for veterinarians and conservation
workers as well as rural communities. Active health programs and education are fostering a better understanding of an appreciation for the natural
world for those living near these endangered apes. The zoo staff also
works with the Art of Conservation project, and the Gorilla Rehabilitation
and Conservation (GRACE) Center.
Founded in 1922 and operated by the not-for-profit Houston Zoo, Inc., the
Houston Zoo is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species, the
provision of engaging educational opportunities and the creation of stimulating exhibits that broaden the experiences of our guests and encourage
their curiosity. Set in a 55-acre lush tropical landscape, the Zoo is home
to more than 6,000 exotic animals representing more than 800 species.
The Houston Zoo is located at 6200 Hermann Park Drive in beautiful
Hermann Park. The zoo is open daily at 9 a.m. and closed Christmas
Day. www.HoustonZoo.org.
The Houston Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums
(AZA). Look for the AZA logo whenever you visit a zoo or aquarium as
your assurance that you are supporting a facility dedicated to providing
excellent care for animals, a great experience for you, and a better future
for all living things.

A.D. Players Presents Alexander and
the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Players announces that Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day will
open March 3 and run through March 22, 2015 on their Grace Theater stage, as the third
show of the company’s 2014-2015 Children’s Theater season.
In this delightful adaptation of her popular book, Judith Viorst sets Alexander’s rather trying
life to music and brings to the stage one of America’s feistiest characters. Not only does
Alexander wake up with gum in his hair, but his mother forgets to pack him dessert, and his
best friend decides he’s not his best friend anymore. Alexander’s struggles with life’s daily
dramas will not only entertain but educate young audiences as they identify with Alexander
and the obstacles he encounters, encouraging them to share their feelings and to realize
that bad days happen-- even in Australia.
“We all can relate to having bad days, when it feels like the entire world is against us. But
...things often aren’t as bad as they seem in the moment, and tomorrow is an opportunity to
do better. That’s what makes this simple story a classic; it illustrates that important lesson
so well.” -Braden Hunt, Director
The cast of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day includes A. D.
Players’ resident actors William S. Burke, Craig Griffin, Megan Jackson, Michelle Ritter,
and guest artists Will Ledesma, Daniel Miller, and Briana Resa.

Now through March 8, 2015, Houston Ballet presents the highlight
of the 2014-2015 season: the
world premiere of a new production of Romeo and Juliet by Stanton Welch. One of Shakespeare’s
most famous tales, Stanton
Welch’s Romeo and Juliet, will be
a fresh, brilliantly imagined interpretation of the classic love story of
two star-crossed lovers. The production is set to the exquisite score
by Sergei Prokofiev and designed
by renowned Italian designer Roberta Guidi di Bagno, who will create the spectacular scenery and
costumes for the production. This
new production, Houston Ballet’s
first in 28 years, is made possible
through the generosity of longtime
Houston Ballet supporters Ted and
Melza Barr.
“Romeo and Juliet is a milestone
work, a benchmark for a choreographer. I’ve never created a work
inspired by Shakespeare’s dramas
before. Prokofiev’s score is so
exquisitely evocative, with such
a strong sense of the individual
characters. There are parts of the
score that are so moving and emotional that they can bring one to
tears,” states Mr. Welch.
The production would not be possible without the support of Ted and
Melza Barr. The couple has generously underwritten the entire cost
of Welch’s new Romeo and Juliet.
“Romeo and Juliet has long been
one of our favorite ballets, and
we were excited when we learned
Stanton was interested in doing a
new version of it for Houston Ballet,” comments Melza Barr. “With
his amazing and talented choreography, the talented artistry of the
Houston dancers, and the beautiful sets and costume designs by
Roberta Guidi di Bagno, it thrills us
to be able to support such a production.”
Set in Verona, Italy, during the Italian Renaissance, Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William
Shakespeare about two young
star-crossed lovers whose deaths
ultimately reconcile their feuding
families. According to literary scholar Harold Bloom in Shakespeare:
The Invention of the Human, it is
“the most persuasive celebration
of romantic love in Western literature.” Believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595, the
play is among Shakespeare’s most
popular, and, along with Hamlet,
is one of his most frequently performed plays.
Performances will be held at Brown
Theater, Wortham Theater Center,
501 Texas Avenue in downtown
Houston. Tickets are $19 - $135.

Stark Naked Theatre and UH Present
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Stark Naked Theatre Company continues its fourth
season with a compelling
production of one of William
Shakespeare’s most beloved
plays, A Midsummer Night’s
Dream. Co-directed by Philip
Lehl and Kim Tobin-Lehl, and
produced in collaboration
with the University of Houston, A Midsummer Night’s
Dream previews on March
5th, opens on March 6th, and
runs through March 21st at
STUDIO 101. The production features a talented ensemble cast.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
is a romantic comedy that
centers on the misadventures
of four young lovers and a
troupe of traveling actors, all
of whom are manipulated by
the fairies inhabiting the enchanted forest in which the play is set. However, unlike most standard versions of Midsummer, in Lehl and TobinLehl’s expert hands, Stark Naked’s exciting new production explores far
beneath the surface of romantic folly and exposes the dark theme of
love’s inconstancy and volatility inherent in Shakespeare’s text.
With the resounding success of its previous Shakespeare productions,
Stark Naked Theatre Company has firmly established its reputation for
immersing Houston audiences in the Bard’s timeless storytelling.
Performances will be held at Stark Naked’s STUDIO 101, located at
Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, Texas, 77007.
Regular show times are as follows: Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and
Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., Sundays at 3:00 p.m. and a special “Pay What
You Can” performance scheduled on March 16th at 7:30 p.m. Individual
tickets (priced at $25 for adults, $19 for seniors and $12 for students) as
well as $40 reserved Gold Seat tickets are available for all performances.
Tickets can be purchased at www.starknakedtheatre.com or by phone at
832-866-6514. Tickets for the March 13th and March 20th performances
of A Midsummer Night’s Dream include admission to an improv show by
renowned Houston improv group Ophelia’s Rope (with special guest) immediately following the conclusion of Midsummer.
Tickets for the Ophelia’s Rope performances can also be purchased for
$10 at the door.

In his art, John Lennon, the legendary musician,
songwriter, poet, philosopher and artist, delivered a
consistent message – peace and love. Art was actually his first love, as he began drawing long before he

John Lennon’s artwork celebrates human love and
communication – two themes at the heart of his contribution to the art of the twentieth century. His iconic
Self-Portrait image has become the cornerstone of
the collection. Offered through the Bag One Arts program, these posthumous, limited edition prints are
adapted from Lennon’s original drawings. The art
has been selected from rare archival sketches and is
representative of his whimsical and thought provoking
imagery. Each print is reproduced utilizing the sophisticated and detailed standards typical for archival fine

In many ways, John Lennon was truly a renaissance
man whose insights and perspective helped shape
the sensibility of the contemporary mind. Born John
Winston Lennon on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool,
England, he died tragically on December 8 1980. He
married Yoko Ono at Gibraltar on March 20 1969. On
March 29, 1969 John and Yoko commenced their famous bed-in for peace at the Amsterdam Hilton.
While music will be remembered as his most popular
art form, he loved both literature and his visual art,
studying at Liverpool Art Institute from 1957-1960. He
penned and illustrated three books: In His Own White,
A Spaniard in the Works, and Skywriting by Word of
Mouth.
As early as 1969, John began moving toward a return to visual art. He was primarily interested in drawing and favored the creative loose sketch, working in
pen and ink. In 1969, as a wedding gift for Yoko, John
drew the ‘Bag One Portfolio’, a chronicle of their wedding ceremony, honeymoon, and their plea for world
peace, the Bed-in. The suite also contained erotic
sketches. The ‘Bag One Series’ was first published
and exhibited in January 1970 at the London Art Gallery. On the second day, the exhibition was closed by
Scotland Yard and the erotic lithographs confiscated.
During 1986, Yoko Ono decided to share John’s artistic genius with the public by publishing the first in a
series of prints entitled ‘This is my Story Both Humble
and True’ followed with ‘Bag One Continued...’, ‘Dakota Days’, ‘Karuizawa Series’ and ‘Japan Through
John Lennon’s Eyes’. These works are a commentary
on John’s everyday life, his wife, Yoko and their son,
Sean. The drawings are whimsical yet poetic, loving
portraits of their years together. Drawn by one of the
most important cultural figures of our time, these

illustrations celebrate human love and communication- two themes at the heart of John Lennon’s contribution to the art of the twentieth century.
Born and raised in Liverpool, England, as a teenager John Lennon became involved in music, forming his first band, the Quarrymen, which by 1960 had
evolved into The Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. Lennon
was a visual artist before he picked up his first guitar
or wrote his first song. He attended the prestigious
Liverpool Art Institute (1957-1960). He continued to
draw throughout his life. Lennon’s primary medium
was line drawing, either in pen, pencil, or Japanese
sumi ink. He not only penned, but also sketched the
drawings which became illustrations for three bestselling books: In His Own Write (1964), A Spaniard in
the Works (1965) and Skywriting By Word of Mouth
(1987).
In the years that followed, Lennon expressed himself once again through drawing, this time reflecting
his love for his family. Since 1989 Bag One Arts has
published a series of limited edition prints of his work,
which have traveled throughout the world.
The graphic collection has traveled throughout the
U.S., England, Spain, Italy, Japan, Australia, New
Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore and
Manila.
Off the Wall Gallery is located at 5015 Westheimer,

March 2015 Houston Ballet’s Modern Masters
continued from p. 1
Ballo della Regina, a ballet for two principals, four female soloists, and
corps de ballet, is set to the ballet music of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Don
Carlos. New York City Ballet premiered the work on January 12, 1978
to great acclaim. George Balanchine choreographed the ballet to showcase the talents of New York City Ballet ballerina Merrill Ashley. Lincoln
Kirstein, who with Balanchine co-founded New York City Ballet, wrote
that the ballet seems to take place in a grotto, with reference through
lighting and costumes to the original tale of a fisherman’s search for the
perfect pearl. “From Verdi’s way of dealing with the chorus,” Balanchine
told biographer Bernard Taper, “I have learned how to handle the corps
de ballet, the ensemble, the soloists, how to make the soloists stand out
against the corps, and when to give them a rest.”
Ms. Ashley commented, “Balanchine always seemed to take special delight in challenging me with difficult steps, and since he knew I excelled
at moving quickly, he decided to make that the feature of Ballo --virtuoso
steps at high speed. He highlighted all my strengths in Ballo, giving me
a ballet that not only was challenging and fun to dance, but one that
gave me the opportunity to communicate the joy of dance, which was
my favorite mood to express on stage. Ballo epitomizes the essence of
the technique that he advocated, as it requires extreme precision, clarity,
speed, and expansive movement. Dancers who are not trained in the Balanchine style are always startled to find how much easier the steps are
when they use the technique Balanchine advocated. His choreography
is constructed with the idea that the steps will be done as he would have
taught them. That is what makes the angles of the steps look best, and
what makes the transitions from step-to-step possible at high speeds.”
Ballo della Regina is one of the most technically challenging neoclassical
ballets in the Balanchine canon. The piece demands dizzying turns with
lightning-speed reflexes and is noted for the female lead’s technically difficult allegro choreography.
Jardí Tancat, which means “closed garden” in the Catalonian dialect, is
set to Catalonian folk tales collected and passionately sung by Spanish
singer Maria del Mar Bonet. With a sweet, yet passionate melancholy,
these folksongs and their dance portrayal tell the story of the people who
work the barren land, praying to God for the rain that does not come and
enduring with great spirit in the face of hardship. Though Jardí Tancat
was choreographed for classically trained dancers, its movement vocabulary is strikingly individual – and an exciting challenge for Houston Ballet
artists charged with communicating the work’s powerful feeling.
Nacho Duato created Jardí Tancat, his first work, in 1983 while he was a
member of the Netherlands Dance Theater, winning the first prize at the
International Choreographic Workshop in Cologne.
Harald Lander’s Etudes traces a ballet dancer’s basic movements, the
five positions of the feet and the simplest barre exercise, and develops in
difficulty and in brilliance to a final cascade of turns and leaps. Inserted
into the ballet is a pas de deux, frequently referred to as “the sylphide
section,” which recalls the nineteenth-century Romantic ballet of Denmark. Originally created by Danish choreographer Harald Lander for the
Royal Danish Ballet in 1948, Etudes has entered the repertoires of the
world’s best companies, including the Paris Opera Ballet, American Ballet
Theatre, English National Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet.
“Etudes is a very challenging classical work that is a benchmark for Houston Ballet and has been in the company’s repertoire for over three decades. We last performed Etudes in 2003, and it will be exciting for our
audiences to see how the company’s classical technique has grown and
evolved over the last decade,” states Mr. Welch.
Houston Ballet’s performances of Modern Masters generously underwritten by Chevron and Sysco Corporation.
On February 17, 1969 a troupe of 15 young dancers made its stage debut at Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in Huntsville, Texas. Since
that time, Houston Ballet has evolved into a company of 55 dancers with
a budget of $24.5 million (making it the United States’ fifth largest ballet
company by number of dancers), a state-of-the-art performance space
built especially for the company, Wortham Theater Center, the largest
professional dance facility in America, Houston Ballet’s $46.6 million
Center for Dance which opened in April 2011, and an endowment of just
over $69 million (as of June 2014).

Save Texas History’s 2015
Texas Travels Essay Contest
Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush would like to remind parents
and teachers to encourage 4th and 7th grade students to participate in
Save Texas History’s 2015 Texas Travels Essay Contest. The Texas
Travels Essay Contest encourages students to read and write about cities, towns, and distinct geographic locales that are significant to the development of this state, as well as the brave individuals who pioneered
vast and uncharted areas of Texas.
“As a former history teacher, it’s especially rewarding to have the opportunity to encourage students to participate in the 2015 Texas Travels
Essay Contest,” Bush said. “Students learning about Texas history are
introduced to the heroes who founded our great state. I look forward to
reading the essays and congratulating the winners.”
All public, private and home-schooled students of appropriate age for
4th and 7th grades may participate. Submissions will be judged based
on originality, creativity, historical accuracy, organization, proper use of
grammar, spelling, neatness and presentation. Entries must be received
by March 13, 2015. One grand prize award winner per grade level will receive round trip airline tickets for four to San Antonio from any Southwest
Airlines destination in Texas, hotel accommodations for two nights and
complimentary tickets to attractions provided by the San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau, and an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of
the Alamo. Ten finalists per grade level will win Save Texas History backpacks, certificates of appreciation and a historic map reproduction from
the Land Office map collection.
Visit www.glo.texas.gov/save-texas-history/essay-contest.html. Applicants with questions may contact Buck Cole, the K-12 Education and
Outreach Coordinator for the Texas General Land Office’s Archives and
Records at 512-936-9644 or [email protected].
The Holocaust Museum Houston
presents Birthrights Left Behind,
now through June 14, 2015. Determined to create a permanent
impression with her audiences,
Washington, DC-area printmaker
Pauline Jakobsberg uses her powerful prints -- full of tenderness,
caring and humanity balanced with
pathos and grief -- both as a legacy
to her relatives’ experiences during the Holocaust and to remind all
that the human impulse to remember our past cannot be fulfilled by
giving universality to the individual
history of specific people.
Inspired by memory drawings,
journal sketches, artifacts and
family tales told by the Holocaust
survivors of her husband’s family,
Jakobsberg has created art that
leaves sweet, yet haunting memories, making her visions a reality.
By incorporating images from photographs and other documents into
her etched prints, she develops a
story, reminding us of our inability
to grasp our past completely. For

Beasts of Burden:
Draft Animals at Work
Livestock trained to work, such as
horses, mules, and oxen, played a
vital role in the operations of early
Texas farms. Whether it was pulling plows, harrowing fields, hauling

burden made light work of sometimes daunting tasks. Join Barrington Living History Farm and the
Texas Draft Horse and Mule Association in a unique opportunity to
experience draft animals at work.
Various aspects of field preparation using horses, mules and oxen
will be demonstrated, with some
hands-on opportunities. Activities
are dependent on weather and soil
conditions.
Beasts of Burden: Draft Animals
at Work will be held Saturday and
Sunday, March 28 & 29, 2015, at
Barrington Living History Farm,
home of Dr. Anson Jones, last
president of the Republic of Texas.
It is located within Washington-onthe-Brazos State Historical Park off
Highway 105 between Navasota

and resting breaks for the animals
as needed. Please call if you have
questions. The program is free with
general admission. Reservations

specializes in helping equine of all sizes and shapes have a
second chance at life. Founded in 2010, our aim is to help unwanted, abused, and neglected equine have a place to heal,
feel safe and be loved before placing them with their new
owners. We offer immediate shelter, medical care, rehabilitation and behavioral training to each horse before carefully coordinating an adoption between horse and prospective owner.

Zeke was picked up by a caring driver on Hwy 290 several
weeks ago after he saw Zeke
literally dodging cars speeding down the freeway. Covered
with ticks and fleas, numerous
skin lesions and thin as a rail,
Zeke stood quietly in the back
yard while he took in his new
surroundings. He is bug free
now, his coat is improving and
he has put on a little weight. For
a dog, Zeke is incredibily quiet.
He seldom whines or barks, but
he can be a bit dominant, particularly around food. Lying on
the floor in the bedroom, living
room, or kitchen is his specialty. And in some ways he is
very catlike in that he often approaches sideways and then
rubs his flank slowly against
your leg. We think he is around
two or so in age and appears
to be in good health. He is neutered, has all his shots, and
chipped. He just needs a good
home to love him for the special
dog that he is. If you are interested in Zeke, apply to adopt
today at www.txlabrescue.org.

Meet SUGAR
www.rescuedpetsmovement.org
Please meet our sweet ol’ gal, Sugar! Sugar is a 10 year old lab
who was left at a local kill shelter last month. After 10 long years, of
what looks to be breeding her, she was no longer needed and left at
a shelter for someone else to worry about. People came and went
each day, but as the story usually goes, they take the young puppies
and little dogs. Sugar is 10 years old, a black dog with a gray muzzle
and feet, and weighs 67 pounds. All odds were against her.
Meet WILLIE & WALLY
www.rescuedpetsmovement.org
Wally and Willie are part of
RPM’S local adoption program!
Born to a feral mom, they can
tend to be shy at first meeting
and might not do best at on-site
adoption sites. They are living
large in their foster home and
and are very affectionate with
their foster family! Wally and
Willie are happy, playful, loving
little boys. When meeting new
people, they tend to take a bit
to warm up, so any new home
might experience this. Not to
worry, in no time, you will have
2 very loyal and rambunctious
boys playing about your house!
Wally and Willie love other cats,
toys, and playing the day away.
When its nap time, they turn to
each other for a good old fashioned cuddle!! Anyone that has
had an orange/buff/red tabby
before, knows they are such
affectionate cats! Wally & Willie are 6 months old, neutered,
up to date on shots and microchipped. Just insert a loving,
permanent home and they are
all set!! If you are interested
in adopting Wally and/or Willie,
please contact RPM at info@
rescuedpetsmovement.org or
go directly to the web to complete an adoption application at:
www.rescuedpetsmovement.org.
adopt a friend
in 2015 !!!!!
Until two ladies came across her
picture at the pound, their hearts
broke instantly, and the rest is
history! Sugar is now in a loving foster home. Her sad face
and head hung low..all a distant
memory! Sugar is in a home
with other dogs, both young and
old, and she loves them all! Talk
about some pep in her step. She
loves playing with the others,
her tail wags non-stop. She is
so appreciative for any amount
of loving. She has taken quickly
to cuddles, playing and lounging with the other dogs, even
frisky with happiness if you will.
To boot, she lives with a cat
now and just thinks she is one
of them. She would do great in
a home with cats and dogs and
just about anyone. Sugar is one
of the sweetest dogs you will
ever meet. When you think of an
old dog, think of a dog with life
experience & stories to tell. She
is easy going, house trained,
doesn’t need to be crated, and
just happy to be with you. If you
think you want to give Sugar the
home she has always deserved,
please contact Dana at [email protected] for more
information! You can also go directly to the web to complete an
adoption application at:

To mark the 40th anniversary of
man’s landing on the moon, the
MFAH presents The Moon: “Houston, Tranquility Base Here. The Eagle has Landed,” an exhibition that
chronicles man’s enduring fascination over five centuries with our
nearest planetary neighbor. Ranging from moonlit landscapes by the
Old Masters and the Impressionists, to Ansel Adams’ iconic Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico
(1941) and shots famously taken
on the moon by the members of
Apollo 11, the exhibition provides
a dazzling overview of five centuries of moon-gazing. In addition,
early scientific instruments, books,
moon globes, maps, Galileo Galilei’s 1610 treatise on the moon,
and objects from NASA will be on
view. The Moon is on exhibit now
through January 10, 2010 in the
Audrey Jones Beck Building.

submitted by Chad Hogg, told by Cristl Craig
This is my second year to do the Komen Cure walk; a charity that raises
money and awareness for the fight against Breast Cancer. Ironically,
today is the year long anniversary that my girlfriend, Cristl Craig, had
surgery to remove her cancer. Even more ironic, the day I sign up for
the walk and try to raise money for this wonderful cause, she sends out
a fabulous email. Instead of me even trying to write what kind of year
she has had and the courage she has shown, I thought I would forward a
note she sent to her family and friends earlier today that describes what
a year it has been.

In Her Own Words: To my friends and family,
This morning my good friend said to me… Happy “Weird” Anniversary!
So true! It was one year ago today that I went in to Methodist Hospital
for my Bi-lateral mastectomy. Is this an anniversary? Is this a day to be
happy? June 25th was my year “anniversary” from diagnosis. Was that
to be celebrated? I don’t know how I feel about these anniversary dates
but it seems to me that in order to figure out a way to be happy with my
“new normal” I have to look back at what I have overcome. This is why I
am sharing my story with you.
