And sometimes nature can be terrible, with diseases such as measles or worse still, polio or small pox. Jewish tradition teaches us that there is a human obligation to overcome nature by curing disease, and using vaccines if necessary. VACCINATIONS There was a recent news story about a woman who worked in the health care field and was required to receive a flu shot. She refused on philosophical grounds. She claimed that she was a vegan and the flu vaccine is made with eggs, an animal product that she would not put in her body. Her boss claimed that her refusal to get a flu shot was a threat to the patients with whom she worked. The case went to court. Eventually the woman won; one can refuse vaccinations on religious or philosophical grounds. A Message From Our President 500 Pounds of Corned Beef At the time of this writing, there is a lot of commotion about the cinematic release of Fifty Shades of Grey, based on the painting instruction book of the same name (I think that’s what it’s about). Really, the talk of the town should be “500 Pounds of Corned Beef,” referring to the special delivery shipped to AYS in preparation for this year’s sandwich meal sale. The star of the show is of course the sandwich, featuring lean, hand sliced, high-quality Kosher corned beef, piled high on bakery Jewish rye bread. The all-star supporting cast will include a Shul-baked brownie, chips, pickle spears, and a Coca-Cola soft drink or bottled water. Our goal is to sell 1,300 meals this year and with the price being only $12 per meal, we should have no problem accomplishing this outcome. Please place your order(s) as soon as possible (We could sell out!) and do everything you can to spread the word. Order forms are available outside the AYS office, in this edition of the Menorah or I can email them to you. Or even better, go straight to www.cornedbeefaugusta.com, to place your order easily and securely online. We greatly need volunteers as well. Whether helping in the kitchen, assembling the lunch boxes, or delivering the orders, there is something everyone can do to pitch in. Also start generating buzz about local media appearances by Rabbi David Sirull. On February 27th he already appeared on WGAC 580 AM radio with Harley Drew and Mary Liz Nolan and on March 3rd he will appear on WJBF News Channel 6 News at Noon with Mary Morrison. Like last year, the fundraiser will also benefit a local charity. This year Shepeard Community Blood Center has been selected as the recipient. Not only will a small portion of the net proceeds go to support its life-saving efforts, but we will also proudly host a blood drive between 11AM – 3PM on March 15th. Please call the AYS office today to sign up and help save three local lives, or sign up through www.cornedbeefaugusta.com. The AYS Corned Beef Fundraiser is quickly becoming the major community event that it was envisioned to be several years ago. We are a strong but small community, and it can only succeed and grow if everyone takes an active role. Whether by contacting a few friends or businesses you patronize to encourage orders, assisting in the delivery of orders, or helping for a few hours in the preparation of the lunch boxes, everyone can play a crucial role in making this year’s fundraiser a blockbuster event. Place your orders and sign up to help now at www.cornedbeefaugusta.com under the Shepeard Drive/Volunteer tab. This case points to a controversy that is raging today. Not long ago there was a belief that measles had been eliminated in the United States. Now there has been an outbreak, which started at the happiest place on earth – Disneyland, and has reached our own state of Georgia. More and more parents have refused to have their children vaccinated, and have become the victims of this new outbreak. In some states, one can refuse vaccinations on religious grounds. But that raises a profound question about the attitude of religion towards vaccinations. One can understand how certain religions would forbid vaccinations. The Amish, for example, have forbidden their communities from utilizing many of the wonders of modern technology. Christian Scientists reject modern medicine in favor of seeking God's intervention in medical issues. At one point, Jehovah's Witnesses forbade vaccinations, worried that the vaccines contained blood. More recently, that opposition has mellowed, leaving it up to the believer's individual conscience. But what I find fascinating is the number of Jews and Christians who have opted out of vaccinating their children on religious grounds. What is the religious thinking behind this opposition? Some people today make every attempt to live lightly on the earth, trying to be at one with nature. While there is merit in this attitude, there are many people in this movement that are the most vocal critics of circumcision. And many people who take this approach oppose vaccinations. How does Judaism view this return to nature movement? The Torah tells us that humans have an obligation to heal. Of course, sometimes healing involves going against nature, or perhaps better, helping nature along. Disease is natural, and injuries are part of living in the natural world. Overcoming disease or healing injuries, whether by surgery or drugs or both, is part of a human obligation. With respect to the current controversy regarding vaccinations, I believe there is a fundamental danger in the "back to nature" movement. Yes, nature is God's creation. But nature is amoral, neither good nor bad. Sometimes nature can be wonderful, one 3 Men’s Club: WOrlD WIDe WrAP On Sunday, February 1st the AYS Men's Club and other AYS members participated in the World Wide Wrap. Sisterhood News: Torah Fund News On Sunday afternoon February 8, rae & Paul Wallach hosted AYS synagogue’s first Torah Fund event, a Torah Fund Tea which was attended by approximately 20 Sisterhood members. Our special guest speaker was their daughter, Rabbi Shira Wallach. Shira is presently in Dallas, Texas, and is a member of the team of rabbis at Congregation Shearith Israel. After the ladies enjoyed some tea and a nosh, Shira shared some of her perspectives from the book of Samuel, namely about Hannah. Shira lead the women through a sequence of texts including Brachot (Talmud) and midrashim that explored Hannah’s ability to set a new precedent of how to pray. She included the laws set by the rabbis based on verses that were read. Discussed was Hannah’s audacity (chutzpah), and how she could be an inspiration to women and men today. Several of those in attendance shared personal moments, reflecting on Hannah’s situation. 4 Shira’s teaching session was delightful, and it is hoped that Shira may be invited on a yearly basis to share more words of Torah with our ladies and demonstrate just how our Torah Fund contributions provide for our future rabbis and cantors. Just a reminder that you may support Torah Fund with a contribution in any amount and you may also desire to purchase Torah Fund Cards for various occasions. Your support of Torah Fund helps greatly to ensure the future of the Conservative Movement through the education and training received at the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) and other Conservative/Masorti educational institutions throughout the world. Contributions are payable to Torah Fund and may be sent to Rae Wallach, 3512 Greenway Drive, Evans, GA 30809. To purchase cards, please contact her at 813-892-2381 or email her at [email protected]. Book Review Sisterhood’s book review, A Guide for the Perplexed (a novel) by Dara Horn has once again been postponed. The new date is saturday, March 21st following Kiddush. The book review will be led by Cathy Fishman. Below is a synopsis of the book: Dara Horn’s latest novel is an engrossing story with many narrative layers. Josie Askenzai is a brilliant young software designer whose program, Geniza, archives events in people’s lives. When she is kidnapped while consulting at the Library of Alexandria (Egypt), her sister Judith moves into Josie’s home to help her brother-in-law care for her young niece. In this story of sibling relationships, not just Josie and Judith, but many other sets of siblings associated with the Cairo Geniza (a depository for old and discarded sacred books and Jewish documents, from the middle ages through the early modern era first discovered by Solomon Schechter), the reader is drawn into a web of complex family harmonies and disharmonies. The book is available through Amazon in print and Kindle editions. It is also available through Barnes and Noble in print and Nook editions. Purim You should have recently received a Purim postcard. The reading of the Megillah will begin at 6:15 on Wednesday, March 4th and will be followed by “make your own sundaes” and hamantashen direct from Brooklyn! AYS Religious School students will take part in the services. There will be costume contests for various age groups and prizes for the kids! Please join in the fun! sAVe the DATe The next general Sisterhood meeting will be Tuesday, March 24th at the home of Meryl edwards. Adas Yeshurun Synagogue The Passover Pullout 2015/5775 The Rabbinical Assembly Pesach Guide The Torah prohibits the ownership of chametz (leaven) during Pesach. Therefore, we arrange for the sale of the chametz to a non-Jew. The transfer, mechirat chametz, is accomplished by appointing an agent, usually the rabbi, to handle the sale. It is valid and legal transfer of ownership. At the end of the holiday, the agent arranges for the reversion of ownership of the now-permitted chametz. If ownership of the chametz was not transferred before the holiday, the use of this chametz is prohibited after the holiday as well (chametz she-avar alav ha-Pesach). Since the Torah prohibits the eating of chametz during Pesach, and since many common foods contain some admixture of chametz, guidance is necessary when shopping and preparing for Pesach. During the eight days of Pesach, chametz cannot lose its identity in an admixture. Therefore, the minutest amount of chametz renders the whole admixture chametz and its use on Pesach is prohibited. What follows is a general guideline. However, the rabbi should be consulted when any doubt arises. Kosher lePesach labels that do not bear the name of a rabbi or one of the recognized symbols of rabbinic supervision, or which are not integral to the package, should not be used without consulting the rabbi. Prohibited foods include the following: leavened bread, cakes, biscuits, crackers, cereal, coffees containing cereal derivatives, wheat, barley, oats, spelt, rye, and all liquids containing ingredients or flavors made from grain alcohol. Most Ashkenazic authorities have added the following foods (kitniyot) to the above list: rice, corn, millet, legumes (beans and peas; however, string beans are permitted). The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has ruled unanimously that peanuts and peanut oil are permissible. Some Ashkenazic authorities permit, while others forbid, the use of legumes in a form other than their natural state, for example, corn sweeteners, corn oil, soy oil. Sephardic authorities permit the use of all of the above. Consult the rabbi for guidance in the use of these products. PerMITTeD FOODs: A. The following foods require no kosher le-Pesach label if purchased prior to Pesach: unopened packages or containers of natural coffee without cereal additives (However, be aware that coffees produced by General Foods are not kosher for Passover unless marked KP); sugar, pure tea (not herbal tea); salt (not iodized); pepper; natural spices; frozen fruit juices with no additives; frozen (uncooked) vegetables (for legumes see above); milk; butter; cottage cheese; cream cheese; ripened cheeses such as cheddar (hard), muenster (semi-soft) and Camembert (soft); frozen (uncooked) fruit (with no additives); baking soda. B. The following foods require no kosher le-Pesach label if purchased before or during Pesach: Fresh fruits and vegetables (for legumes see above), eggs, fresh fish and fresh meat. C. The following foods require a kosher le-Pesach label if purchased before or during Pesach: All baked products (matzah, cakes, matzah flour, farfel, matzah meal, and any products containing matzah); canned or bottled fruit juices (These juices are often clarified with kitniyot which are not listed among the ingredients. However, if one knows there are no such agents, the juice may be purchased prior to Pesach without a kosher le-Pesach label); canned tuna (since tuna, even when packed in water, has often been processed in vegetable broth and/or hydrolyzed protein—however, if it is known that the tuna is packed exclusively in water, without any additional ingredients or additives, it may be purchased without a kosher le-Pesach label); wine; vinegar; liquor; oils; dried fruits; candy; chocolate flavored milk; ice cream; yogurt and soda. D. The following processed foods (canned, bottled or frozen), require a kosher le-Pesach label if purchased during Pesach: milk, butter, juices, vegetables, fruit, milk products, spices, coffee, tea, and fish, as well as all foods listed in Category C. DeTerGeNTs: If permitted during the year, powdered and liquid detergents do not require a kosher le-Pesach label. MeDICINe: Since chametz binders are used in many pills, the following guidelines should be followed: If the medicine is required for life sustaining therapy, it may be used on Pesach. If it is not for life sustaining therapy, some authorities permit, while others prohibit. Consult the rabbi. In all cases, capsules are preferable to pills. KAsHerING OF UTeNsIls: The process of kashering utensils depends on how the utensils are used. According to halakhah, leaven can be purged from a utensil by the same process in which it was absorbed in the utensil (ke-voleo kach poleto). Therefore, utensils used in cooking are kashered by boiling, those used in broiling are kashered by fire and heat, and those used only for cold food are kashered by rinsing. A. EARTHENWARE: (china, pottery, etc.) may not be kashered. However, fine translucent chinaware which has not been used for over a year may be used if scoured and cleaned in hot water. B. METAL: (wholly made of metal) UTENSILS USED IN FIRE (spit, broiler) must first be thoroughly scrubbed and cleansed and then made as hot as possible. Those used for cooking or eating (silverware, pots) must be thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned and completely immersed in boiling water. Pots should not be used for a period of at least 24 hours between the cleaning and the immersion in boiling water. Metal baking utensils cannot be kashered. C. OVENS AND RANGES: Every part that comes in contact with food must be thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned. Then, oven and range should be heated as hot as possible for a half hour. If there is a broil setting, use it. Selfcleaning ovens should be scrubbed and cleaned and then put through the self-cleaning cycle. Continuous cleaning ovens must be kashered in the same manner as regular ovens. MICROWAVE OVENS, which do not cook the food by means of heat, should be cleaned, and then a cup of water should be placed inside. Then the oven should be turned on until the water disappears. A microwave oven that has a browning element cannot be kashered for Pesach. D. GLASSWARE: Authorities disagree as to the method for kashering drinking utensils. One opinion requires soaking in water for three days, changing the water every 24 hours. The other opinion requires only a thorough scrubbing before Pesach, or putting them through a dishwasher. Glass Cookware: There is a difference of opinion as to whether it is to be kashered. One opinion is that it must be kashered. After a thorough cleansing, there should be water boiled in them which will overflow the rim. The other opinion is that only a thorough cleansing is required. Glass Bakeware, like metal bakeware, may not be kashered. e. DISHWASHER: After not using the machine for a period of 24 hours, a full cycle with detergent should be run. F. ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES: If the parts that come into contact with chametz are removable, they can be kashered in the appropriate way (if metal, follow the rules for metal utensils). If the parts are not removable, the appliance cannot be kashered. (All exposed parts should be thoroughly cleaned.) G. TABLES, CLOSETS AND COUNTERS: If used with chametz, they should be thoroughly cleaned and covered, and then they may be used. H. KITCHEN SINK: A metal sink can be kashered by thoroughly cleaning and then pouring boiling water over it. A porcelain sink should be cleaned and a sink rack used. If, however, dishes are to be soaked in a porcelain sink, a dish basin must be used. I. CHAMETZ AND NON-PASSOVER UTENSILS: Non-Passover dishes, pots and chametz whose ownership has been transferred, should be separated, locked up or covered, and marked in order to prevent accidental use.
