Tamil Nadu Music College: Founders Day
Jayam Cultural Festival was celebrated
from Feb 23 to 25 to mark the Founders Day of
the Tamil Nadu Music College.
The event was inaugurated on Feb 23 by
K. C. Veeramani, minister of school education,
Tamil Nadu. Various dance, music and cultural
concerts were conducted. The valedictory function was held at the open air stadium of the
college on Feb 25. The chief guest was
Dr. K. Rosaiah, the governor of Tamil Nadu.
He presented the Jayam award of excellence to
veena vidushi Ranganayaki Rajagopalan, which
was received by her son Shankar Rajagopalan.

“Our neighborhood - our pride” - that was the theme
of a campaign undertaken by the students of Hari Shree
Vidyalayam in R A Puram on Feb 28. Students from three
schools in the neighborhood - CHSV, Raja Muthiah School
and Sigappi primary school joined hands too. They were
supported by parents, teachers, volunteers from Rotary and

David Annousamy’s traditional house on La Porte
Street in the old Tamil quarters of Pondicherry is
packed with about 50 people on a Sunday morning.
Pondy is at peace this Sunday with most people on the
streets heading home after Mass at the Church of the
Immaculate Conception on Mission Street.
This Sunday, this retired judge, commentator and
activist is playing host to one of the many events of the first
ever Pondicherry Heritage Festival held last weekend.
‘What does Pondy mean to you?’ is the theme for a
conversation that David chairs, and he is so like a genial
but firm-handed school headmaster, making sure everyone
present shares his or her thoughts.
The fest is an initiative by a small group of Pondicherrians to get the community, the government and the
businesses to respect and restore whatever is special,
vintage and close to all of us.
The initiative comes after a disaster - the collapse of the
badly maintained Marie Hall, the iconic seaside complex
which celebrated freedom and was the place to register
births, weddings and deaths.
The festival was a mix of formal events, talks, discussions, tours and short music performances. The Ashram’s
Library, a vintage house in Kurichikuppam, the Gratitude heritage home stay and Alliance Francaise’s Maison
Columbani were some of the venues for these events.
People said Pondy was theirs because it was peaceful, it
was welcoming, it had a amalgamation of cultures, it
allowed you to experiment and grow. But life was changing
rapidly. Buses and vans were rumbling through the streets,
bringing loads of tourists. The beach was packed to the
pavements even on weekdays, old houses were turned into
godowns and retail stores. And recent migrants cared less
for heritage and local history.
If there was one glaring hole in this earnest and sincere
initiative it was shortsightedness and exclusivity.
All the events were more closed than open. They were
restricted to what is still called ‘white town’ save for events
at David’s wonderful house and at the mansion of
dubash-diarist Ananda Ranga Pillai. ven the events were
Odissi, Jazz and Aurobindo sided.
I was a guest of the fest and took part in events on all
the three days. And I also realised how we, as triggers of
the ‘Madras Week’ were yet to go to places we have not
been, work in neighborhoods that some of us have not
even seen.
If we can learn and adapt, lots more will happen. Got to
be open.
Environmentalist and socio-cultural activist Dr Nanditha Krishna, who
also runs the C P R Foundation in
Alwarpet, is among the new set of
members appointed to the Indian
Council of Historical Research ( ICHR)
by the new central government.
Nanditha says that there are two
areas where the council can work - to
encourage documentation of local
histories and to promote publication of
recent research and study in this field. Nanditha works out
of her campus on Eldams Road, Alwarpet.
Chain snatching near Chitrakulam
Ayisha was drawing a kolam outside her house here when
two men on a bike snatched her chain weighing 9 sovereigns.
The robbery happened Feb 28 morning at 5:30 a.m. near
Chitrakulam. The Mylapore police are looking into this.

Tribute to Suguna Purushothaman

Carnatic music vocalist K. Gayathri
wrote for KutcheriBuzz a tribute to
her guru Suguna Purushothaman who
passed away last week.
Suguna ‘mami’, the way
I dearly addressed her has
created a vacuum in my life
as well as my career.
Her passing away has
not only been a personal
loss but a huge irreplaceable loss to the music fraternity too. She was known
for her charismatic, evercharming, smiling, witty,
simple, soft nature which
created an impact
on each and every
student’s mind.
My association with
mami began in May 1994
and it just seems like today when I joined
her classes.
I was 11 years old and was riding a
tricycle in Abhiramapuram when mami had
a conversation with my grandmother and
that is when she accepted me as her disciple
even though she said it would not be possible for her to give private lessons.
The class hall would be filled with
students with not a single vacant place to
sit and there would be interesting theory
sessions, tests, quizzes and what not!!
Group classes all the way …. challenging
sessions, questioning each other, receiving
our bit from mami as well it is all fresh in
my memory. Whenever mami introduced me
to someone , she would say “ thuru thuru nu
cycle ottindu iruppal, enna lakshayame
panna maattaa “(this girl would be busy
riding her cycle not giving a heed to me!)
Mami was an epitome of classicism as
we all know. She would never compromise
on a single sangati of a particular kriti and
would always say “ thookkathla ezhupinaalum paadanum …andha alavukku saadhagam pannanum” (even if you are woken
up in the middle of your sleep, you should
be able to reproduce the sangati perfectly…
that much practice one should do).
Such was her “paataanthara” suddham.
I can never express in words as to all that I
have learnt from her; be it concert planning
or stage presentation or tackling a particular situation , she has been a mother to me
from the word go.
The ease with which she would take up
challenges was simply mind-blowing. As an
expert in Laya, she would give us exercises
and would say “saadhagam saadhagam
saadhagam”. She made even the complex
talas appear so simple but when we tried, it
would be such a cumbersome exercise.
Without her guidance I
would not have attempted
difficult nadais in a pallavi
or an avadhanam. The last
four years were a testing time for her. But for
her amazing will power
and courage to fight back,
she would not have lived
through.
Every time she was
given chemotherapy treatment, she would suffer for
a week and immediately
resume classes after a gap
of 20 days before her next
chemo session. Such was her committment
to the art form.
Here, I must mention two different
dance productions for Cleveland Tyagaraja
Fesitval - Ramayana and Mahabharatha for
which mami composed the lyrics and set the
tune . Both productions were composed at
The Apollo Speciality Hospital in Chennai
when she was undergoing chemotherapy.
She would say “When you have committed to someone, you should live upto it.
Likewise, for the December Season 2014,
she did a lec-dem at The Music Academy
on “Kalpana swaras at different eduppus”
which was very well received by all.
About a month before she passed away,
she had committed to Suguna Varadachari
mami for a lec-dem on “Pallavis” - celebrating her 70 years . Mami asked me to stay
back as she was fighting a bad wheeze
and related health conditions. In spite of
all these problems, she participated in the
demonstration which showed her true devotion to the art.
She was one person to whom I could
share anything and everything. She was
more than a mother to me and I should say
we were great “Whatsapp buddies”!! I really
miss her messages from morning till night
sharing all what we liked, the way best
friends do.
I have literally travelled through her
journey receiving all the love and affection
that a mother, a teacher, a guide, a mentor,
a friend would give!
I only hope and pray time heals my
mind and I hope she is reborn soon!

Flagging off
Panguni Fest 2015

The buzz of the annual Panguni festival in
Mylapore is on.
The ‘Lagna Pathirikkai’ was read at Sri
Kapaleeswarar Temple
on Feb 28. This is the
precursor to the Panguni
uthsavam which happens
from Mar 26 to Apr 4. The
invitation informs the
people about the timings
for the events to be held
as a part of the Panguni
festival.
The murthis called
Somaskandar comprising
Kapaleeswarar, Karpagambal, a small-sized
Murugan and stand alone
Ambal were arranged in
the mandapam. Abhishekams were performed to all
four murthis.
Over 1000 people were
in the temple to partake
of the unique rituals.
People brought offerings
of flowers which were
presented to the deities.
Abhishekams were
performed with more than 20
varieties of fruits ( including
varieties of bananas), sandal
paste, honey, milk, viboothi,
panchamirtham and curd.
After each abhishekam, the
murthis were adorned with
a specific type of garland.
The garlands were as novel
as they were beautiful - the
fig garlands and cardamom
garlands were beautiful.
After all the abhishekams
were done, a kalasa puja was
performed and the murthis
were bathed in the water of
the kalasams.
That completed, the
murthis were decked
in the finest and
were taken in a
procession inside
the praharas to the
sanctum
sanctorum.
Once inside,
the
lagna pathirikkai was
read in Sanskrit.
The Panguni festival
begins on Mar 26 and
goes on till Apr 4. Each
day, there will be a panchamurthi procession in
the morning and evening
with the deities decked in
various alangarams and
riding various vahanas.
The grand finale is the
Thirukalyanam on Panguni poornima, April 4.

Mess under
Alwarpet flyover
We are happy at the newlook Alwarpet flyover. There
is however another side to this
flyover.
There is a small passage
under the flyover that connects the two sides of TTK
Road (Ambujammal Road and
CIT Colony 6th Cross Street),
which is used by many people.
Chennai Corporation teams
recently cleaned the surrounding space which was (and still
is) being used as a urinal and
garbage dump. The next morning, there was a pile of garbage. Often, we see remains
of food and empty bottles of
alcohol dumped here. (refer

After the makeover, the
Alwarpet flyover looks good the place under it was a public
urinal (even the policeman
used to pee here). Now, that
obnoxious smell is gone.

civic problem - a small shop
has come up on public space
on Oliver Road ( opposite
White Rose store) This may be
just the beginning - one more
shop is being contemplated
near the Oliver Road CIT colony 1st Main Road
junction.
Civic officers must act fast.

V. Ramnarayan’s new
book adds to the growing
body of writing on cricket

30 years to write
a book?
Writer V. Ramnarayan will tell
you, jocularly
that the cause is
sheer laziness.
His new book
‘ Third Man’ is in some
ways a reflection, a drawing on on his years in all
forms of cricket. And it
has been released even as
the World Cup is entering
its next competitive phase
in Australia and
New Zealand.

the magazine on performing arts and theatre ‘Sruti’
and writes on classical
music and on cricket
has previously written
a sport that took him to
the very top. One book
had to do with Mosquitos
in Mambalam and Jolly
men in Alwarpet ( it is on
league and club cricket in
this city) and the other on
Madras Cricket Club.
But ‘Third Man’ is

fortune.” says Ram.

others, Ramnarayan’s
‘Third Man’ documents
cricket of the 70s and 80s
and makes a contribution
to the body of sports
writing that needs more
of this today.
