COMMUNITY MEET ON SUNDAY
TO DISCUSS TRAFFIC ISSUES
By Our Staff Reporter
The one-way proposal for
Mada Streets in Mylapore
appears to be one of the topics that has found interest
among Mylaporeans since the
area is extremely difficult for
them to navigate during the
busy commercial hours as
well as during the religious
festivities at Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple.
Now, a community forum
to address key civic issues of
the neighbourhood is to be
created.
To provide space for
ideas, petitions have been
initiated online and offline to
encourage the public to come
forward with the issues that
they face and also any suggestions from them to make
their commute through the
area easier.
The Traffic Police ran a
trial a couple of weeks ago
making the Mada Streets
one-way but it worried
Mylaporeans because traffic on R. K. Mutt Road was
also forced to take the mada
streets. The system was
dropped the same day.
Jayakaran, Assistant
Commissioner for Traffic
( Mylapore zone) mentioned
that they are open to sugges-
tions and welcome the public
to help the Traffic Police.
The group of people
who have been behind the
‘ make mada streets one
way ‘ petitions would like
to invite Mylaporeans for a
meeting at the Chess Square
in Nageswara Rao Park,
Luz on March 22 at 4 p.m.
The objective of the meeting
is to understand the issues
involved, invite suggestions
from the participants and vet
those suggestions before presenting them to the police.
Also, the Forum is cemented and will address this
and other core issues.
Link to the online
petition - bit.ly/MylaporeMada-Streets-Petition
n The ‘make mada streets one-way’ proposal may
succeed only if traffic on the three streets is managed well.
Parking violations are common. awking is on the increase.
Commercial institutions who do not have parking spaces
hi ack streetspace and some are known to pay park
attendants to reserve public space for the store’s clients.
Perhaps an informal study of the issues will help police
and activists make positive moves.

D ’ S O U Z A
My quick-bite go-to place when I am working
at the Mylapore Times office is Winners Bakery.
You have to be here by 4 p.m. to get the good
stuff. I like the idea of the private-Chennai Corporation
partnership behind this venture, which encourages poor
young men and women to master baking skills and also
help feed this bakery.
When I check in here later on an evening, other
great smells tickle my senses. They float from the neighboring kitchen. Spicy masala curries.
Winners has a nice neighbour. The Amma Unavagam - a state government initiative to provide simple,
low-priced food to the poor.
Often I have been tempted to step in and sample
the chapati-curry on the evening menu. I have had to tell
myself that this place is for people who cannot afford to
pay big for their daily bread.
Amma Unavagams became hot spots as soon as
they were launched. The menu was good, the kitchens
well designed and the turnaround fairly fast.
Since J. Jayalalithaa launched the Unavagam at a
centre in San Thome, this place has been made a showpiece canteen and the women who work here pipe up
when you talk about the then chief minister’s visit.
Last month, I got to listen to the story of a woman
who works at a Unavagam. We were a group enjoying the famed sambar-ildis at Welcome Hotel in Purusawalkam. She had taken a seat at our table and when
our orders got mixed up in that evening rush, it set off
our conversation.
She enjoyed the work in the kitchen. Yes, it was
demanding but challenging too. Better than her previous
job at a local school. She earned three hundred rupees
a day and she was employed on contract; so she could
lose the job anytime.
But things were changing - the demand from customers was on the rise but the supply of foodstuff was
erratic and limited.
Good ideas need vision and backing. Chennai
Corporation doubled over to create the neighborhood
canteens. Schools, public conveniences and garbage
dumps got off the agenda. And the shops for veggies and
medicines seem to be have folded up.
The Phavali family in R. A. Puram is
hosting the acharyas of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Math - Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal
and Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal for
a month at the Sri Lakshmi Kamakshi
Temple on Greenways Road. Special pujas
have been planned for Ugadi which falls on
Mar 21. All are welcome. For details contact
9444925000, 9444071186 and 24937521.
SMART PAVEMENTS JUNCTION
BEING DEVELOPED
IN R. A. PURAM
Chennai Corporation beautifies the city
and neighbourhoods in parts and people
really do not understand what drives the
logic. Anyway, the pavements at the traffic
signal junction of Billroth Hospitals in
R. A. Puram are getting a smart makeover
- red floor tiles and steel railings. Work is
taking place on the side of the TUCS stores
after completion of the work alongside the
hospitals and the
assumption is that the other two corners
will also be smartened.

STORIES AND SIGNIFICANCE
The essence of the utsavams of the
10-day Panguni thiruvizha
Kodiyetram: It is believed that Brahma resides
at the bottom, Vishnu in the middle and
Rudra on top of the kodimaram. At the
topmost point Sadashiva resides. There is
a ‘bali peetam’ in the form of an inverted
lotus in front of the Kodimaram. Badra
lingam resides on the bali peetam. Here
‘bali’ does not mean sacrifice, but offering (samarpanam). Annam in the form of
sakkarai pongal is offered here. It is also
believed that all the devathas descend
on the kodiyetram day and vow to
protect all 8 directions till the festival
concludes on the 10th day with the
celestial wedding. All devas are symbolically accommodated in the trisulam, and the same is brought first
in all the daily processions.
The calendar of events is formed according to the
Agama Vidhi (rules). On the first day after Kodiyetram,
different trees are brought as vahanas at night.
Second day : Sun and Moon (Surya and Chandra)
are vahanas, Sun in the morning and Moon in the
night. The evolution theory is followed here - which
leads to creation of birds, animals, etc. These are
taken out as vahanas, one by one on the days that
follow.
Third Day : Adhikara Nandi: The ‘srushti’ creation
starts on the third day. Hence the famous episode of
‘Gnana paal’ to Thirugnana Sambandar by goddess
Uma Devi takes place at the south bank of temple
tank. This pertains only to Saiva Siddantam of south
and there is no event parallel to this in any other part
of India. arpagambal and Singaravelar are borne by
veena wielding Gandharvi and Gandharvan vahanams respectively.
Fourth day: Purushamruga Vahanam. There was
a saint by name Purush. He prayed to Lord Shiva
thus. ‘Those who visit your temple have different
malefic thoughts in their mind. To get your blessings
they should have purity of thought. Hence bestow
me the power of taking their sins on me.’ That way
he gets the tail of monkey, feet of lion, wings of birds,
etc. Only his face remains as a male human. Lord
Shiva takes pity on him and says, ‘To bless you I will
have you as my vahana and come in the procession
during Brahmotsavam’.
Fifth day: In the morning the deities arrive in
Chavdal Vimanam, where Surya takes the form of the
legs of the vimanam. It may be 8 or 12 in number and
be made of coral (Pavazhakkaal)
Fifth day night is an important day of the festival,
being the Rishabha Vahana day.
The story goes that Lord Shiva, before starting his journey forgets to salute Lord Vinayaka.
Hence he makes Shiva devoid of VahaVaha
na. Lord Vishnu takes pity on Him and He
(dharma itself), comes as a silver Rishabha. It
is also believed that Lord Shiva sets out at night
to ward off all the evils present in the area.
arpagambal comes on a golden Rishabham
and Singaravela on a golden peacock. The procession reaches the 16-pillar mandapam ne t
day early morning and ends with apaleeswara
dancing to the English Note played on the
Western music band.
On the sixth day evening the deities come on
Gaja vahanam. (The white elephant ).
Seventh day: Ther - Popularly referred to as ‘oor
koodi ther izhuthal’. This develops team spirit in
pulling the ther and also maintaining it in good condition throughout the year. When the ther successfully completes its tour on the four mada veedis, it is
believed that there will be good rainfall.
The rules of Brahmotsavam state that once the
flag is hoisted in the local temple, people in the
neighbourhood are not supposed to leave the town
as the celestial wedding is to be considered a family
function of every household. Hence the women folk
buy ‘Theradi manjal kunguman’ and distribute to their
friends and relatives, as we generally do to our guests
who attend functions at home.
All the 33 crore devas (muppathu mukkodi devargal) are believed to descend on the Ther - Surya and
Chandra form the wheels here. Lord Shiva sets forth
as ‘Thripura samhara murthy’ and hence He is seen
holding bow and arrow in his hand, seated inside
the ther.
Eighth day: Arbathumoovar - is the highlight of
all the festival. All the eight days are treated as the
‘janavasam’ of Lord Kapali. The eight day being the
last day, all the deities around the Kapali Temple like
Mundahakanni Amman, Chelli Amman, Draupathi
Mar 21 - 27, 2015
Amman and even Thiruvalluvar participate in the procession. But Kolavizhi Amman, the ‘Kaaval Deivam’
of Mylapore town will lead the procession and Lord
Vinayaka comes only next. The vaira Murugan from
Chintadripet joins last - at about 7pm.
Ninth day: The story of Siva as Bhikshatana goes
that Siva took the form of a beggar to uell the arrogance of the sages of the Daruka vanam. But for apaleeswara, the story is that the ord goes for hunting
after the Arubathu moovar festival, the previous night
and comes back losing his signet ring. arpagambal
suspects that the ord spent the night elesewhere and
shuts the temple doors. apaleeswara takes a bowl
and goes begging. arpagambal, on learning this,
sets out as Mohini and meets the ord on the way.
They both return to the temple and all is then set for
the divine wedding the ne t day.
The vahana that carries Siva as Bhikshatana has
images of women who the ord seeks alms from, fall
for is charms and follow him through the procession.
Tenth day: Thirukkalyanam - Karpagambal in
the form of peacock performs puja to the Shiva linga
and marries Him. The thirumangalyam is first tied to
Piriya Vidai and then to Karpagambal, though both
are the sakthis behind Lord Shiva.
Theerthavari: Theerthavari takes
place 4 times during the Brahmothsavam. The first takes place on the
3rd day when goddess
Karpagambal gives ‘Gnanapaal’
to Thirugnana Sambandar.
Theerthavari is done for Sambandar’s father Sivapadahrudayar.
The second happens on 8th day
when the Angam poombavai episode takes place. This is for the father
of Poompavai, Sivanesar. The third theerthavari
is done on 10th day for Lord Nataraja and the fourth
on the same day for Kapaleeswarar.
Eleventh day: Bandhampari - There comes a
dispute between Lord Kapali and Karpagambal in the
matter of expenses incurred for the wedding.
Sundarar, one of the famous 4 Nayanmars, mediates
and settles the dispute. It is believed that Sundarar
submits the accounts to Chandikeswarar and he
audits the accounts.

REWIND / THE FEST IN THE 60s
C. S. Balachandra Raju.
Satyam Studio, Luz
< Lots of folk arts like Bommalattam and simple
entertainment amused people. The performances
were held on North Mada Street ( near today’s
Indian Bank). Many labour unions, primarily that
of Simpsons set up stalls to offer buttermilk, water
and snacks. The vahanams were simple and devotees
carried them. But the pandals set up on the mada
veedhis were very grand, today, these are dull.
3
T. S. Vishwanathan. resident of East Mada Street
< The ther was always housed in a simple kottai shed opposite
Rasi. It was well kept too. When it was pulled for the procession,
the junction of East and South Mada streets posed a big challenge
- people found it difficult to negotiate it. Those were days when
people came to the fest by bullock carts or walked all the way.
Buses were limited. Those households here who had thinnais let
them be used by devotees to rest or stay overnight. Every morning residents of the veedhis would clean the streets; they were
really clean.
The procession of the vaira Swamy from Chintadripet was grand
on arbathumoovar evening; we waited for it. The lord would be adorned
with
lots of jewels and diamonds and there would be a dozen policemen providing security.
S. Kala and Kamalatchi, senior Mylapore residents
< There were many creative aspects. . . we were fascinated with
the design of the jadais for the ambal. Fresh flowers were always used
for the decoration.
We had lots of guests who came home for the
fest so we would stock up on dhal and vegetables. It was a time when keerai, mocchakottai,
brinjals and drumstick were in great demand.
There would be food at all times. Open kitchen
it was . .
Then, weavers lived and worked on and off
South Mada Street; they would suspend the
work for a few days.
You could listen to the nagaswaram
and classical music of vidaiyatri as far as Mandaveli; it was a quiet area.
V. Vishwanatha Rao, resident of East Mada Street
< I recall the year when
the poles used to carry
the Nandhi broke on East
Mada Street. The vahanam
tilted and the people could
not set it right. The procession stopped for almost 2
hours and started after the
old poles were fixed.
The volunteers used the
‘dhamaru’ for the drumming
at the top of the processions.
On all ten days, city Corporation teams would clean
the veedhis daily and even
water them.
The music was fascinating. They would play the
alavattam, a musical drum..
the bands and nagaswaram
troupes played for long
hours, stopping for 30
minutes at many points. It
made great listening
I recall the times when
chief minister Bhaktavatsalam, alighting from his car
near Chitrakulam, walking
to the ther and pulling it
symbolically!

NOTINGS
. n When the utsava
moorthy comes out of the
temple, He rests in the
16-pillar mandapam, in
the east of the temple. This
mandapam, which is locked
up most of the year, is
opened and cleaned for the
Brahmotsavam. Women of
the area, wash the street,
and decorate them with
beautiful kolams. You too
can join the kolam-drawing
team!
n The last religious
event of this festival, Bhikshatana, is truly appropriate, as the idol of the lord as
an ascetic with a skull bowl
in hand is taken around.
Kapaleeswarar means ‘King
of Ascetics’. At Pralaya,
Siva alone exists with the
ascetic’s bowl of a skull
(kapala) in hand, ready to
take on the role of creator.
If you get inside the temple
well ahead of the processions you can take a close
look at the palanquins and
the images.
n Goddess Karpagambal
is named after the wishyielding kalpaka vriksham
that fulfills the devotee’s
wishes. But the goddess is
believed to grant only those
wishes that she deems appropriate and not all that
the devotees
wish for.
n One of the customs followed at the festival in the
days past was that of fishermen pulling the ther. It is
believed that the temple
may have invited fishermen
to help with the pulling of
the ther because of their
association with Lord Siva.
But the tradition was discontinued a long time ago.
A Sivachariar scholar
said that fishermen used
to drink before pulling the
ther, but sometimes, they
would run amok, and even
leave the ‘ther’ somewhere
along the way. Today, the
ther is pulled by devotees.
Irrespective of caste, or
creed, thousands of devotees
pull the ther around the
four Mada streets. The idol
of Lord Siva inside the ther
bears a bow and arrow depictingThripura Samaham.
n Nadaswaram vidwans
of the stature of Thiruvavaduthurai
Rajarathinam Pillai,
Thiruvidaimarudur Veeraswami Pillai and Thiruveezhimizhalai Brothers,
Nataraja Sundaram Pillai
and Subramaniam Pillai, used to perform at the
festival. Thavil supremo
Needamangalam Meenakshisundaram Pillai, used to
be hired specially, and not
as a part of the nadaswaram
ensemble. The band, at the
end of every night after
the procession, as the deity
moves back into the temple,
plays the tune ‘For he is a
jolly good fellow’. Papanasam
Sivan sang of the Adhikara
Nandi in his song ‘Kaana
Kan Koti Vendum’. You must
accompany the procession at
the head to enjoy the music.
Today though, we do not
have the great nadaswaram artistes playing
at the fest.
n Lots of artistic
work goes into such fest.
Decorations of the temple
campus. Alangarams.
Designer kolams. You
must keep an eye on
the ‘jadai’ of the
ambal. The artistic
touches that are
given to each day’s
jaddai can best be
seen when the palanquins are rested
n The Mylapore
Academy, South Madras
Bharath Scouts and
Guides, and St. John’s
Ambulance Brigade
always lend their hands
at the service centres set
up in Mylapore. On the
important festival days
like Adhikara Nandi.
Rishaba vahanam. ther
and arubathumoovar,
they distribute free packets of food, buttermilk
and water. Donations are
welcome.

Install traffic signals at C. V. Raman - TTK Road junction
My photo here in an indication of the chaos

Problems posed by pet dogs
I suggest a solution which can be tried.
Collect the dogshit in a piece of paper and
deposit it in the pocket of the person leading the
dog. This has been done with telling effect by a
friend of mine in Delhi. You have of course to
face some abuse.
- S. Raghavan, R. A. Puram
en hen the traf c lights are on the traf c
particularly bikes and autos do not honour
the signals.
t since the signals are o n most often
chaos rules. Imagine the fate of aged and
disabled. The signals must be in order and
violators punished.

Sewage leak in Karaneeswarar
Koil Street
One-way on mada streets;
some points
The drain pipe in our area has broken and
sewage water has been running down Karaneeswarar Koil Street and into other areas. The
water seems to come from the area of Kozhaveliamman Temple. This happens regularly in our
area.

remain anonymous
Traffic signals often down, out on
C. P. Ramaswamy Road junctions
t is not clear as to hy the traf c signal
lights at the junctions of St Mary’s Road and
R A Puram 2nd Main on C. P. Ramaswamy
Road go out of order so often and for such
long durations.
St. Mary’s Road – C P Ramaswamy Road
nction traf c lights are a ermanent lia ility.
Following a Mylapore citizen’s online
etition to ity Traf c olice to make all ma a
streets one ay the
T ma e it one ay
for a day! But how? By allowing forcing vehicles on R K Mutt Road to go via mada streets.
This may have looked like a stupid action
but I suspect it was a ploy to ward off any future
attempts to question them to try out on-way on
these streets.
Police placed marker ropes to contain trafc on orth a a treet t this ser es no
purpose as hawkers are perennial nuisance in
the location and violators are not booked all the
time. There is a need for multilevel commercial
parking.
How many have signed the online petition?
Only a small number (100+). Mylaporeans
seem to be silent mute spectators to such issues.

ADD COLOUR TO YOUR CAKE
HEALTH FOOD
By Bama Ranganathan
Here is food for thought: when was the
last time you had a protein shake instead
of coffee or tea? Or went looking for vegetarian omega 3 supplements as a part of
your daily diet? L. Sridhar of SS Fitness
Solutions feels that these foods should
have an important place in our lives, as
much as fruits and vegetables do.
SS Fitness Solutions came into being
about nine years ago, in Egmore. Sridhar’s brother is a
former Mr. India and
is a body builder by
profession. It was
while looking for
products to help him
with his body building activities that
the idea for the business came up. There
was no store in
Chennai at that time
which specialised
in fitness products
and Sridhar felt that the time was right to
open one. Now, SS Fitness Solutions has
4 branches in Chennai catering to
anything needed to maintain the health
and fitness of the body.
In this store, you will find an array of
proteins, muscle milk, muscle toners, fat
burners, vitamins and other dietary supplements. You can bring in a prescription
from your doctor or you can come with a
general idea
and pick out
what you
need with
able assistance from the shop personnel. Serious
body builders can choose from a range of
muscle building and toning products; budding athletes can choose energy boosters,
proteins and vitamins; weight-watchers
can pick fat burners, diet supporters and
metabolism boosters – the choice is abundant. There are also
products that cater to
vegetarians and ve
vegans providing them
with nutrients that
may not be readily
available to them in
the food they eat.
The shop is not
yet functional online
though this is some
something that Sridhar
is actively working
on. But you can call
and place an order through phone and
they will deliver to you anywhere in Tamil
Nadu.
SS Fitness Solutions is the sole distributor in TN for a few major brands of
health foods. The shop is well stocked in
fitness needs, and whatever they don’t
have readily, they are able to obtain it for
you. SS Fitness Solutions is a good stop
along the Fitness way. Contact: 42145584.
Cakes are nowadays not only for birthdays but
have become an important part of any
celebration. To help customise the
celebration, The French Loaf
has some interesting choices
for cakes. Now you can add
a photo to any cake, you can
change the shape of the cake
to suit your choice or you can
add toys to the top of your
cake. What’s more, you can do
all this online!
The icing on the cake, so to
speak, is the current offer that is
available at the bakery. Cakes are available for a starting
price of as low as Rs.450 per Kg. For more information
