“Carried by the Current”
Play by Nicola Pearson (Actors Read) – 7pm at the Conway Muse
– (Hat). An award-winning play by Nicola Pearson directed by
Heather Dyer. In the late 1800s, in a small town in Texas, a group
of women called the Sanctified Sisters had had enough of life with
their abusive husbands. The women, all from wealthy white families, professed “sanctification” as a way to stop sleeping with their
husbands and to stop taking their money. They sold eggs, butter
and cheese, chopped firewood and did laundry to raise money for
their common fund. Eventually, the women moved in together, creating what may have been the first safe house for battered women
in this country. This play is a dramatization of their story.

D.O. Pearson - Part 1
The Stanwood
Area Historical
Society asks,
“Did You Know?”
This is a
continuing
history series.
After the building of dikes and a few logging camps along the
river, Centerville soon had its first school and lodging house. In
1877, the first store came to town. A store was a major event for
early settlers, who previously had to go to Coupeville by boat once
or twice a year for groceries. A few supplies could also be obtained
at other trading posts, but the journey to get them was on foot
through the woods, carrying the beans and bacon home in a
gunny sack piggy-back style. Supplies also came by steamer, but
schedules were apparently far from dependable. To D. O. PEARSON went the honor of bringing the first store to Centerville. He
had previously been in the mercantile business in Coupeville and
after scouting the Stilly for a new location, decided on Centerville
where he bought a small tract of land along the river. According to
his recorded reminiscences, Pearson swapped potatoes for lumber
at the Port Gamble mill and loaded it on a little schooner headed
for Centerville in January 1877. The vessel was stopped by a northwester and finally was beaten back as far as Seattle Bay. Another
trail was made later, and the captain was able to land his cargo.
The store building and wharf were built on the river front, south
of and near Twin City Foods, Inc. The store was 30 by 50 feet with
one and one-half stories, providing upstairs living quarters for his
family. A $4,000 to $5,000 stock of merchandise was brought in by
steamer from San Francisco and Portland; business boomed after
the opening in April 1877. –Photo: D.O. Pearson family.

Bombing
Thwarted:

West Bank terrorists prepared

Imagination Vacation
Snow geese make their winter home here, but snowbirds have
flown south on vacation—and I’m taking care of their cats. These
cats are teaching me the art of the every day vacation.
I bring my office with me in a backpack, because I have work to
do. However, I stay in nice homes and pretend that I’m on holiday.
At my “vacation home” in the woods, I write with my laptop on
my lap until Ronnie edges in. He gets his way, using only one word,
Meow, emphatically, until I comply. Meow is a complex word, a
contraction of me-now. Ronnie’s the purrfect model of purrsistence. Okay, me-now: lap time for him and a mini-vacation for me.
I set the computer on a table and Ronnie settles onto my lap. We
watch YouTube videos of cats (for him) and vintage novelty songs
(for me).
At another “vacation home,” I write at the kitchen table, enjoying
an expansive view of Mt. Baker, the bay, and an ever-changing sky.
Pepper sneaks up and steals my hair ties. I retaliate by shooting
one near her. She jumps on it.
Pepper and Ginger are indoor cats that pretend to live in the
wilderness, stalking and attacking things. They ask me to animate
toys and we play in an imaginary world, speaking body language.
It’s a refreshing break from words and computer.
Come summer, I’ll have my turn for a holiday. But for now, the
cats have shown me how to take a little vacation every day. As I
play on a grand piano with a view of mountains and sea, I truly feel
like I’m on vacation. I’ll be sad when the snowbirds return and it’s
time for me to go home.
But wait! There’s more at peggy.wendel.com
Find links to funny novelty songs and favorite cat videos.

CAsA’s pEt of thE WEEK:
I’m Koshie, but I do like the idea of being called Princess Koshie. I have what is called “tortittude” which
means I view myself as royalty and I firmly believe that
you should view me as royalty as well. I really need a
home with NO big dogs. Small dogs that I can command are ok but big dogs are NOT. Please come by the

NoAh’s pEt of thE WEEK:
Sheila is a tender-hearted little gal, she can be a little
shy at first, but if you move slowly and make sure to
scratch her behind the ears, you’ll win her heart. She
would love a quiet, adult only home as children can just
be too much for her. Sheila would also prefer to be the
only animal in the home as she loves to be the center of
your attention. Meet Sheila at The NOAH Center today!

Well, by now I know you’ve heard the rumors. No, not the cannabis growing operation at the old Tyee Store or even the Marijuana Discount Mercantile at the Bud Hut in the auto parts store
on Hwy 530. Those rumors are true, sad to tell you, especially if
you believed we’d win the War on Drugs with a last minute Surge.
That war we can put on the shelf with Afghanistan, Iraq and Viet
Nam. Just declare victory and bury it out back with the Weapons
of Mass Destruction and try to forget.
No, I’m talking about the annexation of Camano Country Club by
the South End. Folks keep asking me --- thinking, I guess, this is
Gossip Central --- if it’s true or not. They think, rightly or wrongly,
we’ve got our sights set on the territories to the north: the Country
Club, Camano Hills, Camaloch, an inexorable march to the bridge,
take no prisoners, burn a swath wide as Sherman’s through Georgia to the sea. Oh, I know, it makes a certain kind of sense, annex
the gated communities, expand the tax base, bring democracy (or
something equivalent) to the oppressed folks up north.
But … stop and think about it one South End minute. We’re not
landlocked down here. We don’t want county government paying
attention to us. We don’t need our tax assessments going sky high
by annexing the castles north of Elger Bay Store.
If nothing else, we see them as a buffer between us and the mainland, a Maginot Line protecting us from the Stanwoodopolis barbarians who might someday awaken from their sleepy reverie in
the sewer swamps and decide to take by force the Paradise they
haven’t got the wit or imagination to create with their own annexations. From the bridge to the Plaza, it would be one unbroken string of fast foods, failed health clubs, bankrupt bars, DVD
rentals, Pay Day Loans, bank branches, pawnshops, gyppo car
repair --- the entire tsunami detritus of quick buck, fast Freddie
entrepreneurial dead ends we got more than enough of down
here already.
Annex? I don’t think so. DMZ? You bet!

“Life is Art. Art is life. I am Life. Therefore, I am Art.”
These words express the life that I lead today and how life affects
every moment I am. To create an artistic expression from the materials around me that are already pieces of artistic expression, is
the highest of honors. I have the opportunity to do this each day.
Opening my innermost mind to the visions not yet seen is ecstasy
beyond words... to observe my hands molding metal into form
and shape as if it were a massage... to watch it being textured and
ground as if it were the Fourth of July... to cast paint and finish
on the art is as if it were a dance. Watching someone tilting their
head, moving back, moving forth, and walking around to see it
from all sides.
Oh what a glorious place I am in.

in a single installation with our home décor selections.
Need a repair, installation or maintenance visit in the Puget Sound
area? Contact us today! You have us on call 24/7.
“The gas fireplace insert you installed in place of our wood insert
is a joy to own. My wife really loves the beauty and atmosphere
the gas fireplace has brought into our home. We both enjoy the
“no hassle” of gas. No more getting the wood, storing, chopping,
maintaining the fire and cleaning up that we had with wood. The
gas fireplace is “instant heat” which is another big advantage over
the wood. Your top notch crew did a great job. From the custom
arch around the fireplace to the way they installed the gas piping,
we are very satisfied and you should be proud of the job they did.
We recommend our Sundance gas fireplace. Installing it was a
smart decision and one that has made us happy.”

Camano Island Area Scenic & Historic Trail
Our Camano Schoolhouse Foundation has long-envisioned the
creation of a Camano Island Area -- Scenic & Historic Trail, to spotlight our scenic splendor, and significant historic sites -- And, to
attract local and national fans of Scenic/Historic travel and exploration .. Such travelers tend to linger and meander, to catch all points
of interest .. Their food, lodging, fuel etc can provide a major economic boost to Camano and environs. A mid-island Information
Center, at our 1905 schoolhouse would be an ideal location for
disseminating data about “every nook and cranny” of the Camano
Island Area Scenic and Historic Trail and would enrich the travelers’ experience and enjoyment. CSF is eager to gather, soon, at the
SH, all interested parties to discuss and develop such a concept: “A
Collaborative Camano Community Conversation” “Camano Area S
& H Trail” to include Stanwood & nearby H sites.

COMMUNITY
CONNECTION!
In writing these articles on being prepared I must assume that if
you are a reader of the Crabcracker and living on Camano Island
you are also aware that island living requires you be familiar with
the unique conditions you can be faced with in disaster situations
that are far different from living in a metropolitan area where there
is the luxury of calling on adjacent communities for help. The facts
are: our island is subject to isolation, an earthquake can take out
our bridge; we have only the small number of first responders
needed for normal conditions and resources we would normally
call on from the mainland would not be available without a bridge.
We are not prepared for conditions that could last anywhere from
days to weeks after a disaster. You can only draw the conclusion
that this leaves us on our own, responsible for ourselves and dependent on each other. When you decide to live on an island you
also accept the conditions that accompany that decision; island
living in general and specifically your home location and situation.
Do you know how far back from the cliff edge the Oso slide broke
away and how far that material traveled burying a whole housing
development? On this island we have many homes on and below
cliffs. How would you escape a forest fire? Remember there is only
one way off this island. How long do you think it would take to
evacuate thousands of homes? There are many conditions we
will have to cope with on our own because of our isolation. The
most likely are earthquake, wind, and fire with beachfront and
low ground properties faced, additionally, with surge flooding
from high tide and wind combination. Our Camano Preparedness
Group is organized for the purpose of promoting awareness of our
island living conditions and the knowledge to survive and recover
from the emergencies we will one day face. Join our group 3rd
Wednesday each month 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Vista Madrona Fire
station. [email protected] or bswander44@gmail.

Funds raised support local YMCA youth programs. On Feb. 19,
2015, Renae Kettler of RE/MAX Associate Brokers and Krista Van
Moos of Wink Lash Boutique, co-hosted an event to raise funds for
the Stanwood-Camano YMCA’s Annual Campaign. Held at Wink
Lash Boutique, the ladies night out included appetizers, wine, and
prizes. A total of $3,400 was raised to support local Stanwood-Camano YMCA programs which are offered free of charge to youth
at Stanwood High School, Lincoln Hill Academy, Stanwood Middle
School, Port Susan Middle School, and Twin City Elementary. Several businesses provided baskets and donations and Island Girls Catering donated the food for the event. “It was wonderful to see so
many young women at this community event,” said Renae Kettler,
owner of RE/MAX Associate Brokers (Camano Island, Stanwood,
Marysville). “Their support of our YMCA programs is very encouraging and we are looking forward to having them, and their families, as YMCA members once the Y opens!” For more information
on how to support the YMCA Annual Campaign, visit ymca-snoco.

Thrift Store Expansion
Camano Center Announces Expansion of Camano’s 2nd Chance
Thrift Shop. Did you know that nearly 50% of the money needed to operate the Camano Center comes from sales at the 2nd
Chance Thrift Shop on Camano Island? The continued success of
2nd Chance Thrift is critical to keeping the doors open at the Camano Center and to insuring the programs and services offered
to our island residents can keep pace with the growing needs of
our seniors and community. Right now, the 2nd Chance Thrift is
often forced to turn away donations simply because we run out
of room. Every time we have to do this, we are turning away income the Center needs to support our island community. Growing 2nd Chance Thrift Shop is the answer...but...we need your help
to do this! For months, we have been working on plans to build
an additional 4000 square foot building. The plans are drawn, the
permit is approved and our contractor is ready to go. We need
your generous donations to help raise $525,000 to turn our dream
into reality. Our expanded space will give us the room we need
to move our receiving operations inside out of the weather and
increase our capacity to take donations consistently, to double
our processing space and speed, and to double our retail space.
With more room for merchandise, we’ll be able to greatly improve
our customers’ shopping experience. We will have the capacity to
generate more money to help sustain the financial well being of
the Camano Center for years to come and to insure the Center
can continue to provide essential programs and services to our
island community as our needs grow. Your generous donation to
our “2nd Chance Thrift Shop Expansion Fund” is needed now. It is
tax deductible and one of the best investments in the future of
our community’s well being that you can make.

Connections From Your Camano Island Expert
Are you loving our Spring in the air? I love the extra light we are
experiencing with the new daylight savings time. Some people
love it, like me, but I was very surprised that others do not like it
at all. They would prefer it to be the same all year around. Each to
their own, right? Since we have such sunny and longer days, there
are many activities in this edition of our local Crab Cracker. Thank
you so much for this interesting and fun publication. Each month
provides new events and fun things to do for families, couples
and anyone who would like to visit beautiful and sunny Camano
Island.
Just a tad about real estate. We are still in need of inventory, listings! If you are thinking of selling, now is the time. So many sellers are waiting till June and we need your listings now. I can’t believe the number of qualified buyers that are ready now but they
are looking for the right fit. Now is the perfect time not only for
homes, but land is also selling.
Local Broker, Jan
Mather, Camano
Island Expert,
article about local
events, real estate,
personal thoughts
& a new vocabulary word each
and every time.
Our fun word of the day is AVUNCUAR, it is pronounced uh-VUNKyoo-ler and it is an adjective. It describes being kind and friendly
toward a younger or less experienced person. Sometimes it is
related to resembling a uncle in kindness or indulgence. A great
way to use this word is in the following sentence. “Great professional mentors are often avuncular folks, able to extend patience
and kindness to those new to the field.” I love this new word and I
hope I am that person that I can help in real estate when they are
first starting off.
Thank you for enjoying My Journey With Jan and I will continue
to broaden your vocabulary and build on our great community
of Camano Island and Stanwood. Feel free to call me at 360-5074133 or email me at [email protected]. My work hours
are 24/7 and I am always available to represent you in real estate

MORGAN’S
TALES
st. pAtty
fuN fACt:
Corned beef
and cabbage
doesn’t have
anything to do
with corn, but to
the large grains
of salt that were
historically used
to cure meats,
also known as
“corns.”
“Now that spring is here (of course, it has been here all winter this
year!), and the Great Glass Quest is all over, it is time to shift our
attention to the outdoors again.
Morgan’s Tales has a special display to get you ready for the Tenth
Annual Port Susan Snow Goose and Birding Festival. There are
books to help you identify the birds you see, books that will show
you how to attract birds to your backyard, and books that will
give the history of different species of birds. If you are interested
in attending the festival, go to the website at www.snowgoosefest.org for more information on tours and events.
Morgan’s Tales also has books on gardening, whether your plan
to use your yard or your deck. Maybe you are planning this year
to do all your growing in pots. Look at Lasagna Gardening ( it’s
not about how to grow ingredients for lasagna!) There are books
on growing herbs and vegetables. We have a number of editions
of the Sunset published books on Western Gardens that suggest
the plants that grow well in our climate. If the beauty of flowers is
your focus, there are books for that. Or if you are more interested
in how to provide a playground with your garden, you will find
books on how to plan a butterfly garden or how to attract hummingbirds. Books are available about anything you want to do
with your garden.
If your plans are bigger than a garden, and you plan to redo your
entire yard, Morgan’ Tales also has books on landscaping. Almost
all the books have gorgeous pictures to help you visualize your
plans. Some of the books even have maps that will help you plant
for growth.
And remember that the Stanwood Camano Community Resource
Center has sustainable community gardens in the Growing Forward program. You can experiment with your ideas here first,
and a percentage of your growth goes to the Food Bank. Call
629-5257 for details.”

“The things I used to remember about
Stanwood & Camano Island”
“The original location of Napa Auto Parts in Stanwood. My greatgrandfather, grandfather, and father. This building is still standing,
although it doesn’t look like this anymore. Across the street from
the PUD and right in front of where Valley Farm Repair used to be”
(later it became ‘The Clam Shack.’)– Sisu.
“It’s nice to be able to close my eyes and remember certain things
and people, like it was yesterday. HS was filled with so many
memorable moments, everyday events that either made us who
we are or snapped us out of who we were. I treasure every conversation, every smile and all the laughter. From the kid who always
got picked on, or the couple who was constantly breaking up, the
girl who would always cry, the boy who had a million stories, the
loners, the jocks, the smokers . . . Many of us weren’t the best version of ourselves back then, but hopefully we grew, we learned
and made amends.
Now, with all that said . . . . Who wants to play dodgeball?!

INGREDIENTS: 1/2 lb. thick sliced bacon, diced • 6 lb. boneless lamb
shoulder, cut into 2-inch pieces • 1/2 c. all-purpose flour • 1 tsp. salt
• 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and
finely chopped • 1 lg. yellow onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2
stalks celery, finely chopped • 1/2 c. water • 4 c. beef stock • 2 tsp.
granulated sugar • 1 lb. carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces • 2
lg. yellow onions, peeled and quartered • 3 lbs. Yukon gold potatoes,
peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces • 1 tsp. dried thyme leaves • 1 bay
leaf • 1/2 c. dry white wine • Chopped parsley
DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large frying pan sauté the bacon over medium
heat. Place cooked bacon on a paper towel, reserve the bacon fat, set
frying pan aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl, stir together flour, salt &
pepper. Toss lamb pieces in flour mixture, coat evenly. 3. Reheat the
frying pan. Working in batches, brown the lamb pieces in reserved
bacon fat. If you run out of fat, use a little olive oil. 4. Transfer the
browned meat to an 8-10-quart pot with lid. 5. Add the garlic, 1 finely
chopped onion and celery to the pan, sauté until the onion begins to
color a bit. 6. Deglaze the frying pan with 1/2 cup of water, add the
garlic-onion mixture to the pot, along with the reserved bacon pieces, beef stock, sugar and carrots. Cover and simmer for 1-1/2 hours, or
until tender. 7. Add the 2 quartered onions, potatoes, thyme, bay leaf,
and wine to the pot and simmer, covered, for about 20 minutes until
the vegetables are tender. 8. Season the stew with salt and pepper
before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley. Serves 12.

Holding on to memories
Much of are trash
Burning piles of papers
All that’s lef is ash.
Gray and powderly with out elan
Hanging on to life the best way I can.
Often taken for a fool yet unable to speak
Alll the things that matter to the aged freak.
Sad and happy in the same old body
Makes one think life is but a hobby.
Questions still come and go
Yet seldom feel that I’ve grown
To be the person I will become.

Why Balance our chakras?
Come to Z’s Body
& Soul, 629-5040
for a one on one
session or a class
in April.
www.zsremedies.
com
Our chakras (I like to refer to them as our energy centers) are
the power stations of our body, bringing it to life, and keeping
it healthy. Most of us are not aware how they work and why it is
important to keep them healthy. Each chakra is associated with
different parts of us and they need to spin totally in balance for
us to feel good. These energy centers/chakras absorb energy that
comes from our thoughts, feelings and outside environment and
feed this to our body. Our body is affected by the quality of the
energy that passes through the chakras. For instance, if we have
negative thoughts or feelings, we will be filtering negative energy through our chakras and into our body. Over time this can
make our body ill. Our chakras also absorb energy from the environment. Other people’s negative emotions or a room full of
clutter will produce an unhealthy energy which we absorb. We
cannot avoid coming into contact with negative energy or feeling down sometimes, but there is a lot that we can do to change
our feelings from negative to positive and to protect ourselves
from harmful energy in the environment. Keeping our chakras in
tip-top condition is the key, in other words keeping them spinning in balance. Chakra balancing is a bit like spring-cleaning the
chakras and fine-tuning them.
